The Toronto Raptors are finalizing a deal to acquire San Antonio Spurs star Kawhi Leonard in a trade package that includes All-Star DeMar DeRozan, league sources told ESPN.

An agreement in principle could be reached as soon as Wednesday, league sources said.

Leonard and DeRozan are both aware that an agreement could be imminent, and neither is expressing enthusiasm for the deal, league sources said.

Toronto and San Antonio have been talking about the trade for two weeks, and several incarnations of packages have been discussed, league sources said.

Sources close to DeRozan told ESPN's Chris Haynes that DeRozan met with Toronto brass in Las Vegas during summer league and was told he would not be traded.

Raptors president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri is taking a significant risk in pursuing the trade. Ujiri will make the deal with a determination that he can sell Leonard on re-signing with the Raptors next summer in free agency, sources said. Toronto would be able to offer Leonard a five-year, $190 million contract next summer. If Leonard left the Raptors, he could sign a four-year, $141 million deal with a team with the available salary-cap space.

Leonard has been clear that he plans to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency next summer.

DeRozan has three years and $83 million left on his contract, including an Early Termination Option for the 2020-21 season.

Pretty smart move by Toronto. Gives them a year to attempt to convince Kawhi to stay there. About the only way they will ever attract a good free agent.

Hearing that neither side is particularly happy with this trade. Understandable and I'm sure Derozan will be ok eventually, Kawhi I'm not so sure.

For the Spurs I get it. I would have probably wanted to nab a younger player than Demar but outside of that, Demar was probably the best player they were gonna land. And he's right in the middle of his prime.

I think its a bit weird for the Raptors. I don't like it as one year rental, and for the long term with how unpredictable Kawhi has become it's a gamble I wouldn't make myself.

Also another example of why player loyalty to a franchise is a silly fan driven narrative. You are basically trading a guy who embraced that franchise for a guy who publicly at least, wants nothing to do with that franchise. It's a business so shit happens, but its also why I always laugh at these jilted fanbases that forever harbor a grudge when their star wants to leave. Get over it.

As a Torontonian, DeMar DeRozan reminds me of Joe Carter* (minus the rings)--nice counting stats that inflate a mediocre impact. When I tell fellow Torontonians that Joe Carter was never that good, they look at me like I'm wearing a MAGA hat.

DeMar's PER has topped 21.5 once in nine years,** and his playoff PER has never been above 18.2. DeMar has a negative ratings according to ESPN's Defensive Real Plus-Minus: he had the 429th worst on-court impact on team defensive performance in 2017 and the 467th worst in 2018. (A 39-year-old Dirk Nowitzki and a 41-year-old Vince Carter had positive ratings last year.)

*8.6 bWAR as a Jay over 7 seasons, but six 100-RBI seasons.
**Carter did it six times, four times as a Raptor.

On top of that, Atlanta adds a first-round pick during what ESPN's Jonathan Givony indicated last week teams are hearing could be the first year where high schoolers are eligible for the draft. That would potentially produce a so-called "double draft" in 2022 with both the one-and-done prospects from the 2021 recruiting class and 2022 high school seniors eligible.

Pretty good trade for OKC. I actually like Schroder.

The more I looked in to him when it was rumored the Pels were interested, the less I liked of him. Though I was looking at him from the standpoint as a 30+ minute starter.

Though I think in the right system and as a 6th man he makes a lot more sense. Which is what I assume he will be for OKC.

Kings getting dudes to back out and sign with them instead:
Quote
Yogi Ferrell has agreed to a two-year, $6.2 million deal with the Sacramento Kings, according to a Yahoo Sports report.

Earlier Friday, Ferrell backed out of his agreement with the Dallas Mavericks on a two-year, $5.3 million deal that the two sides had agreed to Thursday.

Quote
The Sacramento Kings and forward Nemanja Bjelica have agreed to a three-year deal (first reported by Yahoo Sports). Bjelica spent the previous three seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves, and had agreed to a deal with the Philadelphia 76ers this offseason before backing out this week

Some minor deals:
Quote
The Brooklyn Nets acquired Jared Dudley and a 2021 second-round draft pick from the Phoenix Suns for forward Darrell Arthur on Friday.

Arthur will be waived after his $7.4 million contract is bought out

In another trade on Friday, the Suns sent $1 million to the Philadelphia 76ers to acquire center Richaun Holmes.

Quote
The Memphis Grizzlies and free-agent guard Shelvin Mack are progressing in talks on a one-year deal, league sources told ESPN.

I think Anthony's aging curve is pretty typical.

Anthony is just six months older than James. Making James' aging curve that more impressive.

wouldnt the real method to spite them have been to force them to give up 2 or 3 of their young guys/picks instead of setting it up so that he signs there next offseason while they retain everyone they’ve drafted?

That was the problem, the Lakers didn't have to trade. If Kawhi didn't want to be with the Spurs anymore, with the Lakers as his preferred destination, then the Lakers controlled what the Spurs were receiving back. Spurs didn't want Ball, they were never getting Ingram.

In this instance there's the small chance the Raptors can sell Kawhi on taking the higher raise and longer contract to stay, maybe they make a Finals run, maybe he winds up liking the team/city/etc. Raptors can offer him ~$40 million more than the Lakers. If the Spurs had sent him straight to the Lakers he only lost ~$30 million off the supermax.

Raptors also have the ability to deal Kawhi again, and might be more willing than the Spurs (who wanted a player for now back) to deal with the one team the Lakers don't want anyone dealing with, the Clippers. Especially if it becomes part of the Raptors ending this era and shifting to a rebuild, the Clips have favorable contracts and can maybe take in Ibaka or Lowry too.

The way I understand it, is the Clippers are essentially set up to be able to offer one Max next summer and could possibly offer 2 if they dump Danilo Galinari (or don't extend Tobias Harris).

So essentially this year for them is about developing their two new guards, maintaining respectability and then clearing people out so they can make a run at Kawhi next summer.

The team Kawhi's on can offer him ~$190 million over five years*. The Lakers (or any other team) can offer him a max of ~$150 million over four years. This is the main reason they don't want him landing on the Clippers, as it'd be tough to give up $40 million just to change locker rooms in Staples. The rumor has always been that he'd prefer the Lakers, but LA in general is the main destination and the Lakers wouldn't want to risk it.

If Donald Sterling still owned the Clippers this would probably be different, but Ballmer has no real issues with paying and even overpaying to be good similar to fellow Microsoft alum Paul Allen.

*The Spurs could have resigned Kawhi for ~$225 million over five years, but only they could have done this, it's not on the table from any team now that he's been traded I don't believe.

Quote
Forward Kevin Love was "very excited and obviously humbled" after signing a long-term extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday. Terms were not announced, but league sources told ESPN that the four-year, $120 million extension tops out his overall deal at five years, $145 million.

...

He took $8 million less than his full max as general manager Koby Altman worked with Love and agent Jeff Schwartz to keep some salary cap flexibility for the Cavaliers on the back end of the deal, when his maximum annual salary could've been in the $35 million range, league sources said.

Chicago and Oklahoma City are better than that. First reaction is :mjlol @ Toronto ahead of Boston but that might not even be wrong for the regular season. I think Houston looks about right, they’re definitely worse than they were a year ago, but still the second best team in the conference. Denver might win close to 50 but they’re losing in the first no matter who they pull.

Spurs were 47-35 last year without Kawhi and they add Derozan and they project to 39-43. That would surprise me.

I also think the Lakers can be better than 500. I think Phoenix can hit in the 30's in wins also even if its the low 30's.
