Just need to get two more slabs and kill the NPCs then I'm ready for the end.  Have to say this is easily one of the best games of played.

The red dragon and final boss were push overs compared to the DLC bosses.

Pretty much. What's funny about the Hellkite Wyvern is that he isn't even a boss, it's closer to an "NPC" like Havel or the butchers, he's just a major pain in the ass early in the game.

And yeah, Gwyn is easy. Did you try parrying him or did you just take your big fat sword to him?

It'll take a while for the stat bonuses to pay off if you haven't spec'd for it. Are you using the true or cursed version? The cursed one seems to do more damage for me.

You have to get the Soul of Sif again. The true Greatsword of Artorias is silver, and the cursed one is black. You ascend either a +10 Broken Straight Sword or Straight Sword Hilt to get the true version, and any +10 dagger or straight sword for the cursed version.

Even though the moveset is kinda weak (the heavy attacks are basically useless), for its speed, the damage output at +5 makes it the best weapon in the game if you're just going to keep leveling str/dex/int/faith. It's meant for abnormally high level characters, it won't start outclasssing other weapons until you get near level 150 depending on how you've allocated stats.

yeah, this is fun stuff. Super-basic so far but the atmosphere is excellent. Been playing in 3D on PC, with headphones and it is heart-pumping. The combat is a bit stiff and canned for my liking so far but I suppose that is part of the design, to make combat more deliberate and make you commit to a move. Do you have to grind then? Or can I just forge ahead

Ya grinding is pretty much dependent on how much you die.  The only time I really felt I had to grind in the game was before fatty and skinny and the grinding didn't actually help.

That knight boss battle in the DLC was actually a lot harder than the final boss. Final boss was pretty weak actually, although I wussed out and just used one of the pillars in the room as cover.

Knight... are you talking about Artorias? I understand he's really easy if you co-op, but on your own I agree that he's a very challenging boss. He's actually my favorite to fight because of his stylish and extremely aggressive attack pattern.

And yeah, I get the feeling the final boss wasn't meant to be menacing in the same way. If you do some digging, the game gives you a few clues regarding why he's like that. I don't think I've ever tried legitimately fighting him though, I just parry+riposte him to death.

PREPARE TO DIE RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE.

Chrono casts Thread_Necro; save vs. SAN -- wait, wrong system(s).

Wow, I suck at this game.

What the hell is Humanity, why do I need it, should I stay human instead of zombie-mode, and why does it seem to come-and-go so easily?

humanity allows you to do two things:

kindle bonfires (which increase how much estus you can get from resting at the bonfires)

returning to human form. doing this allows for a few things in game: 1, it means you can be invaded by other online players randomly and also NPC characters at set locations. 2, you can summon other online players and NPC characters. Summoning happens usually near bonfires and right before boss gates.

you lose all humanity and return to undead form when you die.

there may be other things it does but that's really the most relevant.

Yes. With Human Effigies in Dark Souls 2 IIRC. In Dark Souls 1 it's (obviously titled) "Humanity" items. You can farm these from the rats in the Undead Parish/sewers if you have high enough luck and time to get them to drop. Otherwise farming enemies around bonfires enough will give you ONE up to like 10 to use. Having more Humanity in Dark Souls 1 gives you more resistances than just your stats. But if you don't gain your body you lose your 10+ humanity.

Might as well use them to go human unless you don't want to be invaded.

Died against Capra Demon. 20k Souls. :tocry I will defeat you and get them back.
  :punch
I remember that guy giving me a heart-attack.

The last time I played this game, I got as far as Blight-town and had spent almost the entire time Hollowed. The one time I was invaded, I wrecked the other guy like no-one's business.

I had no idea what Humanity did or what its advantages were. This time I was harvesting Humanity the hard way in Undead Parrish, cleaning out everything to get one or two Humanity, and Reverse Hollowing. Turns out there are a lot more assholes in the world of Dark Souls now. I was invaded twice in 40 minutes last night, and I was smashola'd badly each time, by dudes in much, much better gear than I've got. I mean, I was hitting them, but didn't even make a dent in their HP bar.

Now I'm trepidatious about becoming Human. It feels like there are people waiting to take advantage of lower level players. It's frustrating, but that's the definitive vibe of Dark Souls.

Is a Great Axe pretty good? Seems better than the broadsword I was rolling earlier.

Don't bother being human unless you need to do co op or summon. dark soul invaders are assholes. Nothing wrong with being hollowed. Humanity is also rare. So it makes sense to conserve it anyways. kindling is more useful use of humanity than being human.

One thing I'm enjoying heavily this go around is the story. I dunno, the story is fascinating, light, interpretive. It doesn't hold your hand, and feels authentic. It's like a Metroid or something in terms of isolating storytelling. Really impressive stuff. Always a huge fan of minimalist game stories and it works surprisingly well for an rpg.

The dark souls wiki mentions that area opening up after Undead Parish, but the description of the solution for making the way to the ring doesn't sound at all familiar.

Have you done Sen's Fortress/"Funhouse" yet? If no, then you head that direction. If yes, did you beat the boss? No? Then there you go. Yes, then you need to hit the "ring" the boss left.

Thanks for your response. The first run, I did beat this boss. These are the gargoyles on the roof of the church, right?

On this run, starting from zero, I have yet to beat those gargoyles. I've made three attempts to get from the bonfire to the fog door, and have been invaded each time.

HEY! I didn't know that I could opt-in for Offline Gameplay... that shuts out invaders entirely. :hyper

I had come from a World of Tanks session where some idiot was using their Kinect microphone, and EVERYTHING was audible in his room, including his own game audio, coughs, and runny nose snorts. In these cases I always use the XBL Party to start a one-man Party and block out chat audio from everyone. When I started Dark Souls while still in a Party, the game will not allow Online Gameplay.

I made it up to the roof, summoned Praise-the-Sun-Boy, and went to freakin' town on the Gargoyles. Last time I didn't get the helm, so I was happy it dropped this time.

Then, feeling pretty good, I spent everything I could on stats, and went for a casual wander around the old digs while wondering where to go next. It was a bad idea.

I was in the area near the game's 2nd bonfire, where the firebombers are overlooking that narrow bridge. Wanted to target a guy ahead of me, instead targeted a firebomber above and to the left of the bridge, and the change in contextual movement immediately made me walk off the bridge. "YOU ARE DEAD."  :maf

Unfortunately I hadn't checked into a bonfire, so I had a long trek back. On the way, I slipped up against a mob and died again.  :'(

Tonight I looked online about how to do Parries/Ripostes because the Asylum's "tutorial" moment didn't work for me, and now I am going back and revisiting all the early areas, wrecking major undead ass with parrying and riposting. It makes the battles a lot more exciting!

Yeah, I'm staying undead for most of the game; my problem is that I needed to be human to summon Solaire, and all four invasions I went through were en route to the "fog door" before the roof's Gargoyles.

I'd love to not look like a piece of beef jerky, but it's not going to happen!

Yeah, I was two mobs away once, and the dude was waiting just before the fog door, so he just rolled up while I was already busy with those mobs. I should have retreated, ran my ass to a clear area, but I was already so pissed off that this was the fourth time I'd tried the run, only to be invaded each time.

I'm finally in Darkroot (Darkmoon?) Garden again; going to destroy that damned butterfly boss, so I can get the ember, so I can upgrade the blacksmith, so I can turn my great axe into an Occult weapon, so I can destroy the Black Knight in Undead Parish.

It's good to have a plan?

Apparently there /is/ some form of leveling for Invasion ranking, "SL" --?? I haven't looked into it yet. All I know is I'm slumming it up in Balder's armor and some rags, and these guys are rocking some seriously nice gear when they pop into my realm and wreck me.

Invasion is apparently an easy way to get Humanity and Souls?

SL stands for soul level, it's the cumulative level of all your leveling up. There are groupings of SL to the invasion system (a SL120 player cannot invade a SL40 player, etc). Gear is not accounted for though, so you can still have players who are tremendously more powerful invade you.  Anyway, if you are being hindered in trying to summon a NPC phantom by online invasions you could play offline, until you are passed that part.

Darkroot Garden is super short up to its Fog Door, and I recall having big problems with the moonlight moth thing.

I've backtracked and decided to see if the skeletons in the graveyard are any easier now. They are, but they're still a ton of work. The giant skellies are surprisingly easy to beat, but the standard ones are fast, and the attacks seem to quickly drain my stamina bar and wreck my Poise.

Few things are as satisfying as kicking one off from a ledge to his awkwardly-posed doom.
