I figured Lager was just trolling, but he's actually a troll and ignorant.  I don't know anyone who would consider themselves a Diablo fan who didn't play LoD.  It's basically the best expansion ever, and it took a game that was pretty good and made it fucking amazing, and part of the reason people felt so let down is because Diablo III was never going to be LoD right off the bat.  But for someone who has never played it?  Uhhhhhhhhhh...

It'll be interesting to see how the expansion does, and how much it changes the basic gameplay. I'm starting to wonder whether expansions are dead for games like this; they essentially further raise the paywall of games while most people spend their time on f2p stuff like DOTA2 and LoL. I guess we'll see how that plays out in a couple months when the SC2 expansion comes out, and whether it can breath life into the game.

And in terms of gameplay, I'd love for D3 to move away from being some gear based and add more variety into stats and crafting.

The newest patch has more crafting stuff.

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/blog/8414570/Public_Test_Realm_--_Patch_107_Notes-1_15_2013#crafting

I've fucked around with it a bit in the PTR... there's honestly not much point for me, as my character is in the middle of transitioning to having nothing but purely best in slot items for each slot; while in theory the new items can be "best in slot" for a character, the way my build is constructed (there are multiple specific stat break points that I have to reach which causes me to have to stack armor, all resist, life on hit, arcane power on crit, crit chance and increased attack speed on all of my gear) means that I'm not likely to ever roll an actual upgrade compared to what I've already got and what I'll need to end up at my goals.  Which is fine; the new crafting stuff is mostly for people like PD who have played in the past, want to get back into it but don't have bazillions of gold to sink into endgame gear.  This way you can farm crafting reagents, plans and then try to craft BOA items that will be improvements for you.  Although honestly, if you have a couple million gold you could probably gear a whirlwind barb just fine.

The exceptions are gloves and amulets- you could reasonably hope to craft better items in those slots than most legendaries that are out there.

As far as more stat vs. gear based... it's just not ever going to happen.  That was a design choice they made forever ago and it's too integral to what the game is now to change it.  Expansions can and will add a lot to the game, but that's not something that's going to change in my opinion.

It basically comes down to what kind of game player you are.  Kripp is one of those "bro, check out my e-peen" dudes.  He likes anything that measures your character- ladders, pvp, etc.  So he's going to like a game that caters to those things more, even if the core gameplay isn't as good as something else.  I just like killing monsters and getting loot.  I wouldn't mind a ladder reset every once in a while (6-8 months would be healthy I think) but as far as treating these sort of games as a competition I don't give a fuck.

Before you get to Inferno (and even after nowadays) you can pretty much use whatever strategy/skills you like as long as you're updating your gear every 5 levels or so.  So, it really boils down to which you think you'd have more fun as- a melee or ranged class.

Very good point. As someone who also loves stat wonkery and crazy customization, it's right up my alley in many ways. I've been talking to folks on GAF (LOL) about it and they're saying the sluggish controls disappear as your character moves beyond the early game, gets fast weapons/skills etc. Still that doesn't address the clunky hit detection. I'm definitely going to spend a lot of time with the open beta though, just to be sure.

Another big problem I had with PoE was how the monsters blend into the environments. There's a cave in act I where you can barely see these squid monsters because they're the same color as the rocks and ground in the cave  :-\

It's true that your character in PoE WILL move and attack faster as the game progresses.  I'd like to posit that that's shitty game design, even though the same is true in D3.  I think there are two things that support that theory:  1) In D3, the combat is just better and 2) while your move/attack speed increases in both games, in D3 it's GEAR dependent and in PoE it's SKILL dependent.  The couple of times I've tried to get into PoE I always feel like I'm being fucked over when I have to spend skill points on move or attack speed.

Monsters blending into the environment is an issue in PoE, but what can you do?  It's a f2p game that has to make good/clever use of it's money on assets.  For what they've had to work with I think they've done a great job.  People are fucking deluding themselves if they think it's going to be a D3 killer though.

Technically isn't D3 already sort of dead? It's player base continues to dwindle and the word of mouth is pretty bad right now. (I like the game, I'm not a hater)

I don't think PoE is meant to be a "D3 killer" anymore than LoL is meant to be a SC2/WoW killer. It's a f2p game that gives people what they want, and will tempt players by hooking their friends first. Nearly all my SC2 friends are playing DOTA2 or LoL, and don't seem interested in HOTS either. So far it's the completely the opposite reaction I've seen in WoW over the years. Whenever a "WoW Killer" came out my friends would get a bit hyped about certain aspects of it (pvp mainly), play the demo, play the final product...and quickly come back to WoW. Even now I haven't seen many people stay with GW2 or the f2p Star Wars - they come back to WoW or stop playing MMOs.

It's not really anecdotal with popular f2p games right now, they're starting to dominate a lot of PC gaming. SC2 has lost a lot of relevance lately and I see parallels with D3. The hardcore SC2 crowd isn't as hardcore anymore overall, there's a lot of complaining about the metagame and design decisions, etc. But perhaps the biggest thing is the game's difficulty curve turns casual players off, who prefer playing team games with friends (hence, LoL). D3's player base is also suffering from disinterest from a lot of casual players, and hardcore players complaining.

Agreed. Unfortunately it's so well accepted/media approved that it's hard to avoid. It actually hurts games more than helps in many cases, especially with the various "WoW killers." Some of those games, like Rift, actually wound up rather successful but still get dismissed as failed attempts to destroy WoW.

quick question. I'm seeing lots of TL2 negativity in the PoE thread, on twitter, and here to a degree - I wouldn't even call it hate, just a sense of disappointment like the game fucked up big time or something. Given how hyped everyone was for it initially I'm curious what happened?

Yea, I watch Kripp's stream a bit nearly every night and I gotta say the controls look quite fast, responsive, and impressive. Still wondering about hit detection/missed clicks but it's interesting that I don't see anyone talking about it. Obviously the game's forum is full of diehards so I don't pay attention to them, but the game has been on quite a big media tour and I don't see any sites shitting on the controls so far.

Some yes, some no.  I could waste my time and go through them one by one, but what it boils down to is that "D3 is not like D2 in a lot of fundamental aspects" and some of that is better (skill runes) and some of it is not (gear, although yes the 1.0.4 and 1.0.5 patches added a lot of useful legendaries that drop a lot more frequently now).  Basically, if you can't get over the fact that this isn't Diablo 2.5 you're never going to like it.  It's a fine game on it's own merits and unlike D2 is seeing regular support from Bilzzard, so it has the potential to keep growing and evolving.

Are there any things in hardcore mode that aren't in normal mode?

Do you have any hc chars?

Edit: Huh they must have changed some stuff. When I left New Tristam to the weeping hollow there were always these little buggers on the bridge, and the soldiers were like woaaa now there is a portal clicky thing and theres no little buggers.

No, that is a change they made in a patch a while ago (1.0.4 I want to say?) so that you couldn't lure monsters back into New Tristram and let the guards fight them for you.

HC and SC are fundamentally the same with the exception that if your character dies, it's gone forever and so is the loot you were wearing.  Stash and artisans are separate from your SC characters, and so is the AH.

I have a monk and barb in HC.  Haven't gotten very far with either.

Obviously in HC you're going to want to play and gear differently, with a focus on stacking lots of armor, vit and either life regen, life on hit or life steal if your dps is over 70k or so (that's when it starts being really effective) and all resist in inferno.

http://www.vg247.com/2013/02/12/diablo-3-players-getting-the-majority-of-their-gear-from-ah-is-a-problem-says-blizzard/

Quote
Speaking on the Diablo 3 forums via an “Ask a Dev” session, senior game designer Andrew Chambers said the team wants players to feel as if they “own” their gear, not that they are “renting” it.

This is another reason the team has made the new crafted items bound on account.

“We don’t really like that, for most players, all of your current gear is very likely to be something you’ve found on the Auction House,” he said. “This can create a situation where it doesn’t feel like you “own” the gear you’ve obtained; instead, it feels like you are renting it.”

“Making the new crafted items account bound was done for one very distinct reason: to give players more incentives to play the game rather than the Auction House,” added designer Travis Day. “Something we discuss frequently is how the Auction House has impacted the game and how we can refocus players away from farming the Auction House and onto farming monsters.

Apparently the new patch is live?  I honestly don't have a lot of time for games this semester :(

Plus, right now I'm enjoying FE and PoE more anyway.  I kind of want more content.

Having said all of that, I'm sure I'll be farming plans this weekend.

followed by many people agreeing with him

I'm talking about enemy hit boxes which seem great to me. I had never really thought about my own character's hit box, as I never really had a problem dodging shit I was fast enough to dodge....

Is this some new complaint I'm simply not familiar with? Never heard this until today

Basically, this is how it works to my knowledge- an enemy starts an attack, which requires an attack animation.  Your hit box is in range at the beginning of this process- you are getting hit.  Doesn't matter how far away you've scampered.

And yes, this was a way bigger issue back when shit hit harder.  Golgors (the big fat dudes in act 3) are the worst at this, because their animations are so slow- you could be halfway across the screen and still get "hit" by their attack.  So, yeah it's an issue, but not so bad anymore because everything hits like a wet noodle, unless you're playing on higher MP levels.

The people bitching about feel of impact are fucking deluded, as per the usual though.

From what I've read over the months, it's not really the Auction House existing that is the problem. It's the loot design and drops making the game revolve around the AH.

There is a definite issue with the loot... there's just too much going on, while at the same time SO FEW stats really matter.  There needs to be more things that you can build around other than cc/cd/ias and main stat + vit.

I don't think this can be solved, honestly.  The game is still really enjoyable and good, but it's definitely a design choice that I feel was made in error.

I will say this, though- with loot being the way it is, the AH actually almost becomes a NECESSITY.  You're very rarely going to get good end game drops, I've had like 3-4 in 700 hours of play, even with the increased legendary drop rates and shit.

Of course, people would just rather bitch about the AH existing in the first place, but whatevs.

I played an hour or so of 1.07 last night and nearly got my first usable drop from playing in Inferno. Was a nice level 63 shoulder piece with +Str, +Dex, +15% magic find and some +armour but had +Int instead of +Vit :(

Pretty much. Nothing drops, and the gear you focus on is so narrowly defined it makes it hard to truly customize. It's basically just your main stat, vitality, and resists. Meh

I have to think that if the AH didn't exist, the game would be in a very different place right now.  Everyone would have a lot shittier gear, for one.

I wouldn't eliminate the AH actually, I think it can work as a secondary means of getting gear, or evening out your set (say, getting rings and amulets for instance). If I had a magic wand I'd increase drop rates and completely overhaul gear/stats so that you have more control of what you want your character to be/do. And add more spells/attacks.

I think the AH would work best the way Mark Jacobs talked about it for Camelot Unchained, where it exists as a way to mass sell/buy trade materials and not items.

Pretty much. Nothing drops, and the gear you focus on is so narrowly defined it makes it hard to truly customize. It's basically just your main stat, vitality, and resists. Meh

It's tragic sometimes how pieces of gear are unusable just because you rolled one stat on an item instead of another.
