Isn't most of the premium anime on crunchyroll also on hulu? I actually saw kenshin on crunchyroll first which is why I went to hulu to watch it. Weird that they don't use the same source material. I'd rather just spend my money on hulu and get the non-anime stuff as well. Either way I don't actually watch enough anime for it to be worth it and there is enough free stuff to fill my time

Got to buy that Psych season pass next month anyway :hyper

No, they're not. Most of the premium anime on CR is exclusive to that site.

And I have a guest pass, you're in luck.

Whats a good anime for someone who's never watched any at all ever?

Films. Don't watch tv yet as it's a large investment. Start with films.

Start with Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' On Heaven's Door (aka Cowboy Bebop: The Movie), branch out into Ghibli: watch Lupin the Third: Castle of Cagliostro, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Grave of the Fireflies, Whisper of the Heart. If you like those, and you will if you have any inkling of taste, watch Satoshi Kon films: Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers.

Yes, this is definitely where you start if you've never seen any anime before.

I'd also add the movies of Mamoru Oshii: Patlabor the Movie 1 and 2, Ghost in the Shell, and The Sky Crawlers.

Disagree with starting with films. Start with Cowboy Bebop's TV series, if the first episode doesn't hook you, then anime probably isn't for you.

If it does, go through the series and do the movie in between since it's a separate side-story, but wait until you get Ed in the TV show before that point. Then finish the series. Then do Lupin or something.

Gibili's films, I don't really consider "anime" despite being animated and from Japan. Probably because Disney stamped their seal on them for the western releases back in the day.

Oh, I know. It's just the art-style and stuff make me consider Gibli more "West" than "East."

Spirited Away is the only Gibli film I feel that is straddling the border of "anime" for them. But I've got a weird taste when it comes to the genre.

Might as well add on to what everyone else has said with anime recommendations for someone new. My personal recommendation would be Ghost Hunt.  Its like those ghost hunting shows except paranormal stuff is real. The story is told in (mostly) self contained three episode arcs so its easy to jump in and it gets progressively more intense as the series goes on. In episode 3 a poltergeist (or maybe a prankster) knocks a chair over. In episode 20 there is blood everywhere :o

Oh, and S.Cry.Ed. SHINE BRIGHTER AND BRIGHTER!!! :bow2

I agree, if someone wants to get into "anime" as most of us weeaboos understand it, pointing to Ghibli does as much good as pointing to Disney.

GITS, Bebop and stuff would be better recommendations.

Disagree. A lot of the stuff you'll see me suggest, is similar to Ghibli in quality or tone. With that line of logic, I shouldn't suggest Satoshi Kon films either. More than that, many Ghibli films, notably Castle of Cagliostro and especially Nausicaa and Princess Mononoke are extremely anime. Castle of Cagliostro, Miyazaki's first directorial film debut, is a Lupin the Third movie, a film in an already beloved anime franchise. This allows one appreciation for Cowboy Bebop, and later, more Lupin. I suggest this route because: it goes through a nice base of historical roots, shows animes diversity, and can appeal to wide reaching tastes.

Ghibli is a good suggestion, but it dips your toes, and braces for more. Notably, more anime film.

You can't get through Kon films or Cowboy Bebop? My suggestions never fail, sorry. :( I'm not seeing the difference in quality between say, Ghibli and Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen for example. I pile it all in the "good anime" part of my brain. I've never put Ghibli on a pedestal despite enjoying their films. What is the Oscar Test? How does Kon fail but Ghibli passes?

Himu-chan, most of the stuff you recommend doesn't pass the Oscar Test of Anime Tolerance, which basically asks if Oscar can sit through it without wanting to throw a chair through the TV.  Most of Ghibli's stuff *does* pass that test.  Therefore, not anime.

What a strangely roundabout way of asserting that someone has poor taste.

He did not say I have poor taste. No one has told me I have bad taste in anime.

How am I going to sleep tonight?

To be fair, Satoshi Kon films are nothing like Cowboy Bebop.

Shame you don't like Bebop. But it's similar enough to Lupin that I suggest watching the movie before watching Castle of Cagliostro since people need more Lupin in their lives.

And you are a big exception in this. Cowboy Bebop is universally lauded, even amongst people who typically don't like anime.

I love the episodic nature of Cowboy Bebop, mostly how the show reveals itself one episode at a time. The universe is so cool, and the way the show builds layers to help create a history without a main plot ever being the focus is extremely skillful. How the later episodes connect the characters, and help them get over their pasts is also expertly crafted. A common complaint with Cowboy Bebop is that it has no story because it's episodic. That's like saying The Simpsons has no story: the setting is what builds it all up into the show people loved. That said, I know it's not for everyone, but I always thought it was ahead of everything else animated and a tv show that it isn't the aforementioned Simpsons.

Samurai Champloo is well made, but it's...not really that great in the long run. Unlike Bebop, it doesn't have a made up world. It takes place in historical Japan so there's nothing to expound upon.

There is not a lot of anime I like. Especially the stuff that doesn't involve a decent amount of action and is instead about emotions because I don't think anime does that very well. Or if it does, Japanese culture and emotions are so odd to me that it feels weird (I mean based on how anime is. Not necessarily that real Japaneses people are weird or odd). Bebop for me is the best thing I've ever seen in anime. In fact I would go so far as to say I've never found anything for me that hit close to that level again although there are others that I like.

I prefer emotional anime. Stuff like Whisper of the Heart, My Neighbor Totoro, Kino's Journey, Now and Then Here and There, Perfect Blue, Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen. I think anime does emotional very well and my tastes err towards serious adult or family-oriented stuff. My personal taste though.
