but seriously tho, the anger in that piece reminds me of what you'd hear from a militant black person, arguing whites can't help the black man because they just don't understand x,y,z. Leto's comments were harmless, yet the author goes on a tirade about trans and gay people not being the same in any shape or fashion. I understand the tension between the groups, and no gays and trans aren't comparable in many ways, but Leto was not making a strict 1:1 comparison. His point was simply that just as a straight man can play a gay character or vice versa, a straight (or gay) man can play a trans person.

The author really gives the game away here:

Even though Leto mostly just evokes a false equivalency between trans and gay people, we can safely infer he means to extend the argument to cis and trans people (“Rayons of the world” seems to be how Leto refers to trans folks).

If that's not blatant passive aggressive trolling I don't know what is. "X of the world" is a pretty common phrase, and something many actors say to describe the spirit behind the role (eg "I was trying to give a voice to the X who believe they have no voice").

You're wrong, PD. Also you're comparing militant black people, who had a civil rights movement 50 years ago to a marginalized group who is just now getting positive mainstream exposure and are seen by many to be as men playing as women.

The only manner a man playing a transwoman is tolerable, if it's treated like it was on Transparent: ie. if the subject matter is treated with respect.

Not only is your post completely ignorant, it is completely lacking in empathy or understanding of what the author of the article is saying.

Given some of the dialogue, yes, there would still be an issue.

And it still wouldn't be a particularly good possibility model nor a particularly good advocate for trans women in the public face in 2014. Take hormones for a year and then do the role.

Even if it's not blackface, it's an outdated means of stereotyping trans women. It's like Mammy in Gone With The Wind. At the time, seen as a good role that advocates black people. In 2014, seen as a completely offensive and stereotypical take on black people.

No matter how you slice it, Leto's role and oscar win will be considered LOL status by 2024.

I said if you're a transsexual and you're going to play a role as a transsexual woman, take hormones for a year. I'm not talking about non-trans actors taking hormones.

Unfortunately, I think Bale would be depressed and probably end up killing himself. I read a report that said that people who do not have their desired hormone or gender identity end up depressed and this can lead to suicide. I'll try to look it up. I don't think there's much physical harm for Bale getting on mones for a year, but mental harm...if he isn't trans, yeesh.

I guess we'll agree to disagree. When I look at her twitter feed I don't see a coherent argument, at all.

Leto talked with a variety of trans women in order to understand the role, before shooting began; it's not like he waltzed on set with no respect for what he was doing, and I think it's disingenuous to criticize him as if he did something wrong. Worse yet, the lady who wrote the article reads insinuations into Leto's comments that clearly were not there, just to further her outrage. I can't cosign that.

Wow. I just read up on that. I can't imagine.

I ran a cycle of pro hormones a couple of years ago. It lasted 6 weeks and then I went on PCT. The emotional stress was insane... Just "not feeling right". It only lasted a couple of weeks and it was a fairly light hormonal imbalance when it comes down to it. But it was torture. I couldn't imagine living that way.

It was a relief to discover after the first few months of self-administered HRT that I actually found myself a happier, emotionally healthier person. Before that point I was sure that there was some element of fetishism or wish-fulfillment to being transgendered, but it became clear that it was a medical issue that I genuinely suffered from.

True enough. But I've read it is okay and it does happen. For instance any time a trans person has a surgery, you have to go off hormones for days to weeks sometimes months. Hence why it said it is relatively safe.

I'll admit I thought it was an issue of "in your head" type shit for a long time. When I started reading about weight lifting and in turn body builders who messed themselves up I learned about the science behind it and found out I was an ignorant jackass. I think most people are just really unaware of the huge roles hormones play in our well being. I am glad it made such a difference for you by the way

Time for some good news! First of all, PRESCRIPTION ACQUIRED. The doctor I spoke to was recommended by a woman I met in my area's trans support group and she was really helpful and understanding. I told her I had been doing DIY for almost two years now and she wrote me up a script like it was nothing. She also drew up an order for a blood test which I will try and schedule within the next couple weeks. I filled my prescription (and Medi-Cal covered the entire cost

) so I am now very happy, as I completely ran out of spironolactone the day of the appointment. Perfection.

The other bit of news is a little more fun. The doctors I see for hormones and my accident-related injuries are a ways out of town (like a two hour drive from where I live now) so when I got there I spent some time wandering around town and... on the DL I'm catching a lot of guys checking me out

it's a really weird feeling! I get all these mixed emotions like

my room is much nicer (because it's the guest room of my friend's grandma's house) and I try to get my friend to clean up down here but uh, yeah. That's what it looks like all the time. It drives me nuts. What can you do. Some people don't mind living in a mess. It's better than the homeless shelter I was planning on living in.
