TVC, link to spoilers please

Read at your own risk:

http://reddit.com/r/twinpeaks/comments/6s4sqi/s3e14_german_sky_aired_the_wrong_episode_episode/

Damn, it looks like they purged the thread.

In short, from what I remember. . .

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Gordon tells Tammy about the first blue rose case in the 70s.

Gordon has some weird dream/vision featuring Monica Bellucci in Paris. Philip Jeffries appears via FWWM/Missing Pieces footage.

Gordon, Albert, and Tammy find out about Dougie and Janet-E via something in Briggs' stomach and have Janey-E and Dougie arrested. They are apparently headed to Vegas to investigate. At some point Diane reveals that Janey-Y is her estranged half sister (!!!).

The Jack Rabbit's Place stuff goes down. IIRC, Andy gets sucked into a portal similar to the one Gordon almost got sucked into and meets The Giant, who tells Andy things about Bob and the two Coops. Andy gets to leave but the spoiler poster was unsure of if he understood anything he was told. They also find the blind girl from the pink room in the woods and take her into custody.

There was also some weird stuff about Sarah Palmer in a bar or something getting hit on and doing something weird. I want to say "opening her face" or something, but the dude's sentence was in especially weird english[/quote]

It's weird how few places have carried the spoilers. Sky admitted publicly they aired the episode, but it seems very few people actually saw it.

I know. It's kind of amazing how the leak's been contained. I read something about very few people watching the show in Germany plus local laws being very tough on torrenting is the reason. Still, pretty shocking that in this day and age there isn't a bootleg of the episode somewhere.

Logic:

Naido is making monkey sounds. The monkey in FWWM said "Judy." Judy was supposed to be Josie Packard's twin sister in one of the drafts. The actresses playing Josie and Naido are both Asian. I dunno.

Best episode since ep8. The Big Ed scenes felt pretty much exactly like the OG show, and the Mr. C scenes felt pretty close to FWWM.

I remember speculation about why Philip Jeffries was dubbed last episode and I guess now we know why.

Was the Cooper in the FWWM scene with Jeffries actually the Doppel and not the real Coop? After all, there was that weird thing with the security camera, which definitely points to the Doppel.

It's unfortunate that David Bowie passed away and couldn't be in the show and Michael J. Anderson became a crazy asshole and couldn't be in the show. As great as it is, imagine how much better it would be if MFAP didn't have to be a tree and Jeffries wasn't a fog machine.  :-\

Hmm that was last August though, presumably when they were done/almost done filming?

Edit- Ah.

Quote
In the past, Anderson has been publicly frustrated by not being cast in the Twin Peaks reboot, reportedly over salary disagreements — but based on this post, the 62-year-old is clearly trying to drag Lynch's reputation down with him.

So it was more of a money thing. In any case, good riddance?

Caught up on the last 4 eps last night. Man, this show  :maf Sometimes I really love it and think it's the best TV and need the next ep. Sometimes I'm totally bored and on my phone. I usually have the opposite reaction to eps as the fanbase. Like I enjoyed last weeks ep a lot, but this weeks ep was kinda meh for me. The whole out of timing story with the younger kids/roadhouse scenes, while it might be artsy and have a payoff for telling it that way, it's also made all of the scenes incredibly un-engaging for me. The stuff with Shelly's daughter reminds me of the terrible Nadine subplots of S2 where I just want to get back to the good subplots. The last 5-10 mins of every ep is rough to get through usually. Otoh, Dougie has grown on me at this point and the goofyness of his stuff with the casino bosses reminds me of the Ben & Jerry goofy feel of the original which is a positive. Evil Coop's subplot is fairly engaging as is Hawk & Crew. Everything else is pretty whatever to me.

Probably won't know if I like the show until it's over.

As good at being secretive as Lynch is, I don't think he'd be able to keep Bowie's involvement under wraps. That's why I never believed those rumors.

It's not that I have a problem with the kettle itself, it just gives it a retconny feel. So does Frank Truman. The convoluted sheriff brothers angle seems unnecessary. If Michael Ontkean didn't want to come back and they just recast Sheriff Truman I'd actually have an easier time suspending my disbelief. Now we get another Sheriff Truman, who conveniently was never referenced before, with constant references the off screen original Sheriff Truman who is stricken with a mysterious illness.  ???

The Harry Truman things bugs me more because they keep bringing up Harry and I'm pretty sure he isn't going to turn up at all. That's like picking at a scab. I knew they'd do something with Jeffries because he's just been too important to the main narrative, but I think the Harry teasing is just a mean tease.

I'm also wondering if we'll ever get follow-up on the humming in the Great Western. Or whatever the fuck is going on with Jerry.

I wonder though, was Jeffries really important to the narrative, I mean, when the character was originally conceived in FWWM? Do you think Lynch had some grand master plan for Twin Peaks? Because as far as I recall, they made up the first season as they went along. I wrote the Jeffries scene off in FWWM as just one of those idiosyncratic Lynch moments.

They were winging it. From the screenwriter, Bob Engel:

Quote
Going back to some of the other Missing Pieces, one of my favorite parts was the David Bowie/Phillip Jeffries full and extended sequence. It was revealed that Jeffries was looking for Judy at the Buenos Aires hotel, and that he may have discovered the ring at her home in Washington, which led to him witnessing the meeting between the Black Lodge inhabitants. Then of course he gets transported back, and the guy is yelling about his asshole or something at the hotel (laughs).

(Sarcastically) Uh huh.

But there was a lot of stuff revealed, even though it was still mysterious. Who was Judy, and was it ever actually planned that she might be Josie’s sister? What was the whole deal with that scene?

That’s a good question, I don’t quite remember. (Brett laughs) Judy is my wife’s sister’s name, that’s where that came from, I think. Now that I think about it, there might have been more shot [of the Buenos Aires scene]. That was to connect everybody, I think Windom Earle was down there, that was the plan, and that David Bowie was on the hunt for him. We weren’t trying to tie things up neatly, but I think those were meant to be the end of things. But Josie is in Buenos Aires as far as [I can remember], as is Windom Earle. At some point there must have been some planning on how we were going to shoot more of Buenos Aires, and bring him back. But I don’t think we ever got that far, but there was a reason to bring in another agent. (Laughs) But boy you got me, you got me. It was pretty cool to see that stuff though, I remember that.

https://web.archive.org/web/20141110062246/http://www.alternativenation.net/exclusive-bob-engels-talks-possibility-of-twin-peaks-revival-story-behind-david-bowies-character-more/

But in the intervening years, fans have really attached to the whole "Judy" thing as one of those big WTF moments, so I guess Lynch wanted to build on that, maybe? Also, you don't get much cooler than David Bowie.

I just think that maybe if they couldn't get Bowie to film, it would be better to just write the character out of the show. I mean, is he really necessary to the plot of TP:R? Could the story of Cooper coming back, Dougie, Doppelcoop, The Experiment, the Woodsmen, Blue Rose, etc. exist without Jeffries? I think so.

True. They could have replaced him with Chester Desmond (although I'm not sure he had an established relationship with Coop, off hand). It's a sin he hasn't been mentioned at all. Maybe the season was too far into production by the time they realized Bowie wouldn't work? We'll likely never know since Lynch and Frost are so tight-lipped.

Actually, it's really conspicuous Desmond hasn't been mentioned since he knew what "Blue Rose" cases were, implying he was on the task force with Cole, Cooper, and Jeffries. Chris Isaac must have pissed Lynch off Lara Flynn Boyle style.

I would love to get at least a brief cameo of Chet Desmond. Maybe see him in the Red Room or something? I know he was basically a pseudo-Cooper because Kyle McLaughlan didn't want to be in the movie, but he was a cool character and I feel we didn't get a proper resolution to his story. Yeah, like, he's trapped in the lodge too, but he doesn't get his 25 year parole, fuck Chet.

Also, there's another reason Jeffries may have been made prominent that shouldn't be overlooked: Bowie's death. Maybe it's cynical, but maybe his death cemented that he had to be an important part of the season because Lynch/Frost knew Bowie would be on folks' minds so soon after his death. Now, I think Bowie passed away about halfway into filming, so this isn't super duper likely, but I guess it's something to kinda keep in mind.

It's odd that they mentioned Chet as one of the Blue Rose agents, but not Sam. Sam was literally on the case with him. Sam was the bizarro Albert to Chet's bizarro Coop.

I'm just so glad that Miguel Ferrer was able to do his scenes before his death. Albert has been phenomenal this season. And Catherine Coulson's scenes are heartbreaking.

Maybe Sam wasn't officially in yet. Maybe Teresa was his tryout, a la Tammy up until the middle of this season? It's mentioned in the Secret history that (iirc) he quit the FBI and started drinking after the Chet incident, so he probably didn't make the cut.

I think they mentioned Chet, but I'm not positive. Need to re-watch.

I haven't read Secret History, so that's an interesting tidbit.

There's a lot of interesting stuff in it, but the events of the show have pretty much shown it to be "non-canonical" (I have a feeling David Lynch would lol talking about TP canon). For old characters that don't appear in the new series, I guess it's basically canonical since we'll likely never hear from them again.

The other old tie-in books, The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer and The Autobiography of Dale Cooper, are also pretty good (but very non-canonical) if you need a shot of TPness. The former is better than the latter. The Cooper book slides pretty well into canon, except it has him investigating Teresa Banks (as was originally intended at the time). It ends before TP and mostly covers his younger life.

I actually did read The Secret Diaries of Laura Palmer a few years ago, it was very disturbing.

Well, I recommend the Secret History, too. It's a very nicely put together book physically and well done in general. Maybe it will be available for cheap soon since the Final Dossier is coming out in October.

Can't believe I'm seeing so many haters and non-believers. Everything this season is happening exactly as it should.

Outside the Sheriff Truman stuff obvsly lol.
