She was going to report it to my manager but I told her not to because I didn't want to make it a big deal and I felt like the confrontation was my fault anyway.

Maybe this is related, maybe this isn't, but it's so obvious how differently (certain) white people here treat me compared to other minorities. Black people: very nice, or neutral. Latinos: very nice, or neutral. Asians: very nice, or neutral. White people: just as nice or neutral, but the difference is that at their worst they will be impatient, condescending, and sometimes viciously hostile. It can be intensely alienating. I am not paranoid. There is an appreciable difference. This is the minority experience in this country.

The closest I've gotten to a retail experience is being an election officer a couple times. Once I worked with a pervy white boomer and an elderly Asian lady (fluent English speaker). Most people were nice but as soon as the Asian lady took over the first step of the process, verifying that you're registered and that this is your voting location, in the first hour a few white people trickled in that would be immediately hostile to her, asking if she "could even speak English". The white boomer immediately would stop checking out the first-time voters and said that those people are just belligerent and they get that way whenever you point out to them that they are doing a simple process wrong (eg: wrong location/can't find their own name on an alphabetical list).

just as an FYI, if you're buying more than a dozen of these a season you might want to look into just grabbing an aeropress, a handheld frother, and a bottle of the Monin syrup since the cost is roughly the same minus materials, plus you can use roasts that aren't as burnt as Starbucks espresso tends to be. i suppose the potential year round access might spoil some of the seasonal appeal, though.
