Was going to update, but I just figured out how to get remote access for work on my home computer and I can almost guarantee my hospital is not prepared for this.

That seems likely. You don't get a serial key sent to you so it's probably an OEM version tied to the motherboard.

If it's not then you can find the key in the registry and use it together with a downloaded ISO.

Yeah it'll probably be tied to the motherboard. RAM and GPU changing won't prompt you for a new key.

Usually if it prompts you after a hardware change you can just call the MS automated line and it'll give you a validation code. That's what I've done and it works every time.

One thing I don't like about windows 10 is the start menu. I mean, I'm glad there's a start menu, but why is it not customizable? It has all this shit I don't want on it, like these hot tip links and stuff and disk cleanup stuff, when I want a quick access to my most used programs right there like with other start screens. I also don't like the scroll down list of installed programs. I want it old Windows style. I think the third party start menu I had for 8.1 is much better than 10's default.

Basically:

MS I want this.

See how there are PROGRAM PEOPLE USE THERE?

Not this.

I took those default things like Alarms and Sticky Notes no one cares about and now it's just blank. Where are my use most used programs MS?

When you use programs, they show up in pretty much the same place as Win7 (upper left, moving down).
You have the opportunity to make little tiles out of them for quick access.

Basically you can now add unlimited shortcuts to the start menu in stead of the 10 Win7 limits you to.
If you make tiny tiles out of them, you can add a shitload in the same amount of space Win7 uses.

Really, if you are this inflexible in your use of a system, you shouldn't upgrade. Or at least do some basic research.

That doesn't exactly give her what she wants.

https://www.stardock.com/products/start10/
http://www.classicshell.net/

Honestly, after uninstalling Classic Shell, I've gotten used to the start menu of 10. The only thing I've got to complain about is that the "all apps"/program menu is WORSE than 8's Metro menu and should go back to 9x/7's drill-down menu.

Well it doesn't totally give her everything she wants but she can set it to show her most used programs etc., but yeah the show all apps thing is kinda flabbynsick.

40 programs, plus most used, all one click away.
Taking up roughly the space of the regular win7 start menu.

It's still doesn't do what I want it to do, friend.

I generally only have trash can on my desktop. I also only have browser and windows file explorer pinned on my taskbar.

So I generally use start menu to get my most used programs readily accessible. For example, when Steam is not on and I want it on. All I have to do is go to Start, look at the most recently used programs and click Steam. If I need to use Photoshop - and I use it often for work - I do the same. Despite having opened and closed Steam and PS multiple times while on Windows 10, NEITHER have shown up on my Most Used section of my Start menu or on my start menu period. I shouldn't have to add shit. It's been like this going as far back as 98 I think? In any case, I've been using Windows like this since 98. I honestly shouldn't have to pin a single thing. Not only that, but I simply do not like the visual aesthetic of that cluttered start menu. It looks like shit, mate.

Windows 10 Start menu is ass unless you want to use it like a Windows phone.

Installed Classic Shell. Didn't know there was a W10 version. Ahhh, much better.

When I use a program, it pops up in my most recently used programs without having to scroll. Wow, amazing.

And actually customizable, wow who woulda thought.

Oh, pfft. I doubt Edge will break for most people to where they have to Powershell install it.

Besides, Microsoft is phoning home everyone nearly, you can uninstall some shit but if it's "required" in Microsofts eyes they'll reinstall it.

Worst case scenario? Edge isn't installed for a few days. Then it pops up. Meanwhile, clueless users will wonder where the "Blue E/the internet" is. Problems on Microsoft's end to change that perception from Internet Explorer being "the Internet" to Edges.

It was my turn today. I planned to wait until I got an SSD to do a clean install, but since you have to upgrade first to register your system config with MS I might as well upgrade now. Let's see how this goes...

The fucking thing keeps failing, then I have to clear the old files using disk cleanup, only for it to fail again. The ISO fails too, fucking hell. -_-

Turns out an earlier update corrupted some system files:
http://thetechcookbook.com/windows-7-update-kb3022345-causing-corrupt-files/

God, I hate desktop maintenance so fucking much.
