So it's not the mod team you have trouble with but a specific mod?

Nah, the mod team has issues as a whole. The fact that Besada is still there is just another clear symptom.

Neogaf staff is much better than it was ten years ago. Again, I was banned for thinking Big was a creepy movie. If you think gaf is bad now....? You used to be banned by...who was that guy? The guy who made monthly game release threads. You'd be banned by him for bumping a week old thread in the gaf of 2005 because "it's better to make new threads". I've been a thread maker ever since.

TBH your complaints just seem small to me. I've seen gaf grow over the past ten+ years and if you think this is bad then LOL.

Today's gaf staff is pretty good. Certainly has some issues but overall? Much better than it used to be.

People still get banned or juniored because necrobumps.

Neogaf was for a long time, and still is to a certain extent the online face of our industry and its fans

GAF used to be the place where you could go to get an insight about what fans thought about your games and actually interact with them outside of the community manager led publisher forums. People in the industry used to point at GAF as a place to pay attention to, where fans could often get early info about their favorite titles. It's the biggest video game message board on the internet, and to that extent it has a large influence, an influence it doesn't deserve any more.

Does it really?

The fact that formerly perma banned members like Crushed, Borys, or myself can get new accounts and still make it (extremely far in Crushed's case) shows that maybe there's something wrong with your posting? In my experience, gaf staff are willing to look over your past as long as you show that you've put effort into your posts and don't slink back into old, bad habits. They're willing to give multiple chances as long as you put more value into their board.

Honestly, I haven't seen any value from a lot of you new posters besides 2leet. All I see is a bunch of bitching so it's going to make me assume that's how you're like on gaf as well.

Well, is not the only thing and this whole thread (and past Neogaf bitching threads) has cases of mods misconducting themselves. When I got permabanned I didnt even knew by who or for what I was banned, the ony message was the "you are not fit to be in GAF" withouth a hinting what I did ever do. My other bans were because "concern trolling" or, in other words, disagreeing without being insulting so they need to name it something to justify it.

the refusal to engage with people to curb bad behavior is probably the biggest issue. mods would rather click it and wrap it up and get rid of it instead of fix it going forwards. That's the heart of the issue I see. make a policy - stick it to everyone - and engage people when they do bad things. and add a goddamn Report Post button for snitches.

"Concern trolling" is a goto phrase to silence dissent in authoritarian hugboxes. So you're "trolling" by offering a different opinion about the path the discussion/the ideology/the prevailing opinion has taken? Do these morons even know what trolling means?

There is a problem with the moderation there.  Hence multiple forum off-shoots and multiple threads like this one that have been going on for like 12 years now, dating back to Opa-Age.  They have a TOS, but it goes ignored and people will get banned for stating an opinion.  Not a dictatorship?  LOL...that's exactly what it is.  It's a private forum and the guy running it and his mods have absolute control over everything.

And let's not get started on the clique shit that went on in IRC.

That said...there's obviously also a problem with a lot of posters, too.  :doge

All the wrestling thread does is roleplay as wrestlers (yes really)

Neogaf was for a long time, and still is to a certain extent the online face of our industry and its fans

Receipts plz

GAF used to be the place where you could go to get an insight about what fans thought about your games and actually interact with them outside of the community manager led publisher forums. People in the industry used to point at GAF as a place to pay attention to, where fans could often get early info about their favorite titles. It's the biggest video game message board on the internet, and to that extent it has a large influence, an influence it doesn't deserve any more.

Except GAF is a joke now, so I'm not sure why you can't:

(And I say that with respect)

/And yes, I did read your reply: Still...

why are all these people who joined in the last 18 months overwhelmingly giant whiny babies?

Wait, when did I register again? *check*

I'm sure as hell I entered today to the Bore to read about people laughing of Kanyegaf trying to pretend that there is a deep down reason to him meeting Trump outside of attention whoring.

Ever since Bish was demodded, the level of discourse in the OT feels more open. I'm seeing less bans for posters that go against the "popular opinion" in a thread. Makes me think that 'Lore sent down an order to the mods to stop being so ban happy and Bish disagreed with that new direction, hence, he's no longer a mod.

Man, just saw all the replies to my post a few pages ago.

No conservative ever got banned just for being a conservative. No Bernie Bro ever got banned for supporting Bernie. When it comes to politics, people get banned for shitty posts or deplorable opinions. A lot of Trump voters got the axe because they eventually outed themselves as deplorables. A few Bernie Bros got the axe for posting walls of verbal vomit and complete insanity.

As for why PoliGAF is jaded... does it really need to be explained? Look what just happened a month ago.

Sure no one ever got banned (that I know of) for merely existing on the site as a conservative. Sanders supporters weren't banned just because they supported their candidate, but when people get banned for disagreeing with the method of which the BLM protesters took over the Sanders rally early in the election, well... what are people supposed to think?

Just reference Ukraine, then. Can't deflect that blame.

...and they're not in the same dynamic as those examples either.

How about they're moving the needle closer to an absolute monarchy, which happens to be the right's endgame.

Why not then use a historical example of the Manchurian Candidate and what they did? Because this is pretty much that.

The way it worked Jack is that showing a non-liberal or wrongthink view gets you put on a list. Whenever you impinge on some rule in any way, you get banned for being on that list. Meanwhile, showcasing certain "right" opinions means you get to sidestep various rules over and over. Still, there's cases where no rule is violated but a wrong think is espoused and a banning occurs.

The enforcement of rules on the forum has largely been arbitrary for the entire history of the forum.

FWIW, if you want an actual example then I was perma'd for disagreeing with a forum policy and pointing out that it leads to more terrible thread production. I disagreed directly in response to Tyler and I pointed out how people view the forum in real life. I didn't violate a rule except the unspoken rule of don't disagree with the admin.

As for why PoliGAF is jaded... does it really need to be explained? Look what just happened a month ago.

I assume by historical, he means the superior 1962 "history reel" rather than the fictional 2004 film.

Are we strictly talking about bans for political reasons or are there outright denials of bullshit bans on the whole?  Because if it's the latter then someone needs to go read up about what happened to Anti-Monitor.

I caught a ban once, for replying to someone who had suggested the size of the thread (that we were posting in) meant that the subject matter was important.

I pointed out to said person, that the reason the thread was so big, was because they, and 1 other person's posts constituted 30% of the entire thread. They literally replied to any and all dissenting opinion, and to any and every agreeing opinion.

I was banned for "meta-commentary". I had broken a rule that didn't exist.

Oh, the person who brought up said suggestion, starting this meta-commentary in the first place, was...

wait for it...

... not banned.

That was my 2nd ban in 10 years. My next was a perm  :lol
