Gaffers salivating over trying to ruin someones life because it bolsters their pathetic low self esteem.

It's bizarre and fucking scary, I don't particularly like Faraci but some gaffers were enjoying taking him down a bit too much.

I even saw one clutz saying that this was good as he'd railed against SJW's previously.

This isn't the first thread I've seen this kind of shit happening as well.

Faraci is a SJW himself that uses virtue signaling to attack people he wants to silence. No sympathy from me.

Oh I think he's a huge loser and a hypocrite, but this "take them down and destroy their life" bullshit that GAF and others do to people is friggin weird.

Finally an acknowledgement

Quote from: EviLore
First, I'd just like to apologize for this major inconvenience (or worse) that my site has caused. Second, I have completely disabled all of the ads on both the desktop and mobile site as I get to the bottom of this issue, and believe me, this issue is very important to me. I won't re-enable ads again until I'm 100% confident that these malicious ads have been completely removed. And sorry for taking so long to respond.  The reason I couldn't reply earlier was because I was backpacking through Thailand, fighting (and defeating) the top kickboxers in the region.

Just kidding, this is what he said:

Quote from: EviLore
On it. Will disable desktop ads entirely if the ads in question are not identified and removed immediately. Don't know why this was allowed to happen but it is unacceptable and disappointing and the current ad setup will have to be reevaluated.

Exactly. If there is a GAF hivemind I don't think it ever universally loved Faraci.

Personally I've disliked him (costanza was gaga for him back in the day, which was a sign, aside from his own writing style), but when I realized it I ignored him. Honestly haven't heard of him for 3+ years until this new incident. Some people having an axe to grind because of his Lego Movie review of all things is laughable.

Do we really need to link the opinion of the NeoGAF hive mind moral person (if such a thing even exists) to this ? I wouldn't mind if there was some obvious brigading going on but so far it doesn't seem to be the case.

Yeah it all seems like a pile of self righteousness right now. People climbing on top of the pile to say they were right all along.

I wonder if GAF itself is compromised / infected in some way, possibly distributing some malware, or just the bad ads themselves, and that is allowing them to circumvent uBlock Origin etc. Might explain why it seems so prevalent on GAF and nowhere else. The site is running ancient vBulletin software, that hasn't been upgraded in years (I think it's 1 or 2 full versions behind the current one), uses old encryption and doesn't use SSL for anything.

Quote from: harrisk954
Gaming forums can be some of the most toxic places on the internet.  The anonymity of the internet gives people a place to complain, ridicule and spew vitriol against companies and people who spend their lives giving to and supporting the gaming community  Sometimes, harsh criticism can be warranted, but sadly, the people with the most negative positions are the ones who seem to be the most vocal and can drown out the people who want to say something nice. Obviously, this is not limited to just gaming forums, but it seems that these are the places where you can see some of the worst in people.

With that being said, I wanted to share a POSITIVE experience that I just had!

So, late last night, I downloaded the demo of Madden 17 from the PS Store.  I was having an issue with it and was unable to get off of the main loading screen.  The next thing I knew, I accidentally purchased the full game!  Not only that, but there was no warning or prompting for my password.  And, even though there was no money in my PSN Wallet, the system pulled $60.00 out of my Paypal account, again with no warning or prompting for a password!  Needless to say, I was less than happy!

I am so used to seeing seeing negative crap on GAF about Sony and its refund policy that I figured the money was gone and I would be stuck with a game that I didn't want.  BUT, when I called Sony this morning, the guy who answered was so nice and so accommodating, I couldn't believe it!  It was almost like the service you get from Amazon!  Within less than 3 minutes, he approved a refund to my Paypal account of the full $60.00!  We chatted for a few more minutes about PSVR and how excited we both were for its release!  What a great experience and completely counter to what I see from people who post on GAF.  (I am in the U.S., by the way).

With that being said, I would like to open up a topic about people's POSITIVE stories... Stories that say nice things about your dealings with Sony, MS, Apple, Amazon... and (shudder) even GameStop, among others!   Honestly, any story about how you got great treatment, great customer service and an overall great experience, just to counteract the negative stories that we are constantly bombarded with!

So, GAF, what are your POSITIVE stories?

Dunno. When people were having tons of pop(unders) - viewing the forum source showed a chunk of javascript with "adnety" - googling that showed a site advertising it self as the KINGS of popunders. Then the site fixed itself and now the chunk is gone. Whether it was an injection of some kind beyond their control is in the air.

So, would Lore really willingly install a "pop-under" script on GAF? Especially one that totes itself as the "King" of pop-unders... I'd fucking hope not, and I highly doubt it.

I didn't get hit with it, but from what I've seen from screenshots, it was just advertising itself with the pop-unders?

Hmmm. I'd say it is very likely that code was injected.

Which begs the question - how do you plug that hole now? Clearly, the vBulletin software can't be updated, probably because of how big GAF is, so what is to stop whoever from doing that again and again? I'm legitimately asking - how would you fix that?

If 'Lore wanted to update the software, he could. The database may be large, but there's nothing there that would prevent him from being able to upgrade the software outside of being lazy and not wanting to hire someone past... forgetting the admin's name to migrate the site. Plus the site would be down for a day or two to do the migration, so no ad money.
