I was thinking, when self driving cars become common in a decade or so, will a system like the Switch become a lot more appealing in the US? I expect most casual people will play games on their phones, but what about game enthusiasts?

If Nintendo sticks with the Switch formula (obviously won't be our current switch, but a new system or sequel) they could find themselves in an interesting position.

Just some food for thought.

Mario and rabbids was awesome. Got 100% completion after 50 hours. For sure value money for time spent and some genuine awesome moments I won't spoil. Didn't get the season pass however.
I just beat world three.
I have to say, the odd difficulty spikes are kinda annoying though. Starting a "medium" challenge can go from easy one-turn slaughter of all who dare defy me to two-turn annihilation of my entire team with no recourse. Meeting a new mid boss can be a cakewalk or a near game progression halting curbstomp. That stupid plant miniboss gave me far more problems than the endboss of that world. And using enemies to bounce to unreachable areas is kinda too random for me. Also, For the love of Jove, no more Toad escort missions please. Auuuugh.

Having tons of fun though. And that's coming from someone that has zero SRPG skills (and ambitions). Rabbid Yoshi and Rabbid Luigi are my bros.

To be honest I didn't run into a challenge that killed me a few times until last 2 bosses. But don't forget it changes a lot depending on the characters and builds you use so don't be afraid to experiment and respec and you can do that as much as you want. I never played with Yoshi actually except a few fights.

Large part of the game I did a Mario and Luigi then rabbis peach or rabbid Mario last slot. Later game and on what will be ultimate challenges the hardest which took me the longest was with rabbid lugi Mario and Mario rabbid. Think one I had to use peach which is great for escort missions as she heals when she lands on her jump and you can spec that heal pretty strong.

Don't forget to spec into increasing your characters health pools and movement range it helps a lot.

Cool you enjoy the game :)

Doesn't Fire Emblem have boobage too?

(Image removed from quote.)

OK, now take her and make her every character in the game...replacing all male characters with her while you're at it, add a touch of 'yuri,' and there's Azure Knights 2 for you.  :doge

Separate User Profiles for each person?

If the intention is that everyone would share one account however, my understanding is that what you're asking for is impossible atm.

Open to being corrected if I am wrong though.

What bums me out about the switch is the lack of support for the Wii U pro controller. Damn good controller. I don't care about the wireless NFC or HD rumble stuff, and you'd be giving that stuff up anyway if you bought a third-party controller, which as I understand it are all wired for god's sake.

For whatever reason, my copy of Fire Emblem Warriors isn't arriving until tomorrow so I beat the first world of Super Bomberman R.  The first 45 minutes was downloading some giant patches for the game.  I was tempted to skip them but since I heard the game is a lot better with the patches, I waited.  The game itself is okay.  I was a big fan of the mid 90s era of Bomberman games (Bomberman 94, Super Bomberman 3-5, Saturn Bomberman) and this game isn't anything like those games.  The controls are a little loose, getting item upgrades is way too easy, and the first world is cruddy and generic looking.  I got three stars for my performance but I was less than impressed so far.  However, there have been a lot worse Bomberman games I've played.  I'll keep playing it until I get to the end.

Got through the end of the third world and I really dislike how sloppy the controls are.  This game is just not fun at all.

I beat the game and three starred the worlds (not that this means much).  There are a bunch of unlockables, mostly stupid shit to buy to dress up your Bomberman but there are additional characters and stages that you can buy as well.  The prices are pretty steep.  Not worth it at all unless you play constantly.

I played online and played against nothing but dumbasses who keep blowing themselves up.  Many of them will ragequit and you don't get any points for beating ragequitters.  Lame.

I looked online and apparently they shipped 500,000 copies of this game, one of the strongest performances ever.

It's pretty clear the glory days of the franchise are over (and haven't been since the mid 90s).  I don't think anyone here cares about Bomberman games so if you want to try one, see if you can emulate Saturn Bomberman instead.

Bomberman R was one of those right place, right time types of deals, like Street Fighter 4 3DS. I guess the trick is to get in early with a new entry in a well-known franchise that's at least adequate.

All this Bomberman talk makes me want to dig out my Wii for that 15€ downloadable game they had on that. I still can't find it in myself to pay 30+€ for a Bomberman game. I'm part of the problem, I guess.

Everything is off by a factor of 10.  Have the stages and unlockable characters be 400-500 points (or coins or whatever) instead of 4000-5000.  That's a lot of grinding for very little reward.

I know it will never happen but that would be fucking awesome if Saturn Bomberman was eventually re-released.  If Super Bomberman R really did move 500,000 units, hopefully they do something with that.

I still think they need to solve the start-up problem in Bomberman matches.

If you get a bunch of assy upgrades in the beginning (or the path to one of your opponents gets opened up too early), you get ravaged. If your neighbours are dumb and blow themselves up, you can slowly eat up so many power ups that anyone else has little chance against you. If it's a Bomberman where dead people can throw bombs in from the sidelines, then an early suicide can really annoy others and/or benefit yourself.

Plus, let's face it, the first few bombs until you get some "more bombs" or "more flames" powerups are really boring and repetitive. Yet people still manage to blow themselves up during that phase...

I'm sure Bomberman pros want to kill me now because I've shat on the holy meta, but if the meta was any good Bomberman would be more popular. :smug

(Modern solution: next gen Bomberman to have lootbox'd unlocks and character-based progression. :doge )

Sleep mode is good enough. Why wait for the thing to boot.

My switch properly wakes up from pressing the home button, or whatever it's called. Haven't tried the others, to be honest. But at least that button works.

Dammit, thought my post didn't get through when in fact it did.

Uuuuh... Yeah. So how about that lack of miiverse (and it's subsequent demise). No step counter and streetpass either. Wish they could somehow bolt it on after the fact, but that's not gonna happen.

Maybe when switch2 releases. I want my useless toy/minigame stuff in my console.

Hmmm...pretty sure I tried the home button. Maybe I didn't give it enough time. I'll try resyncing the controller I guess.

I was really surprised too that they didn't retain the Streetpass feature seeing as how the portability with friends was a big promo angle. Maybe they'll introduce it later?

I could see why Miiverse was canned though...easier and cheaper to just integrate twatter and facebook into games.

I'm glad the Mii shit is kept to a minimum on the Switch.  I get why it's around but it's more of an afterthought, which I like.  Ideally it would be gone entirely.

One feature that I liked on the Wii U was how it would tell you how much time you spent playing a game.  Not every game will have that counter and I liked seeing how much of my life I wasted on the vidya.

I've only had the Switch on sleep mode.  However my pro controller wakes the switch up when I push the home button every time.

Looking at the Mario & Rabbids season pass. Is there any point to getting it? I alteady got part of it free from a download code in the box so as far as I can tell it's just a challenge pack and a few new weapons for $20. Seems kinda steep. Am I missing something?

Sleep when cradled; off when using as a handheld.  It can't keep a charge all that well, it seems.  I left in standby once over a weekend and the battery was dead the following week.

Same for me.  I swear it used to work, and then just stopped after a system update.

The pro controller is where it's at. Those joycons are too damn small with those fiddly little sticks, grip or no grip.

If you have a Wii U pro controller laying around, OathtoOrder pointed out that you can buy a Mayflash usb dongle to pair it with the switch. ~$30 on Amazon and ~$40 cheaper than the switch pro controller.

Started playing Splatoon 2 and while the actual gameplay is fun, there are so many mind boggling design decisions. I know that Nintendo is the king of handholding but this game probably takes the cake.

It starts with Nintendo blocking vertical stick aim when you activate the gyro aim. REALLY? Even if you think it should be played that way, why would you block the option?

The limited map rotation and available modes (like Salmon Run) where known to me before but I did not think it would get that bad as I have not unlocked Ranked yet. Sadly, the games are also quite short so you nearly spent as much time matchmaking or loading than actual playing.
Salmon Run is a quite good take on the horde mode though I have only played 1 available map which gets boring quickly.

The constant Off the Hook shows, which can't be skipped are quite annoying, especially because there is only the gibberish voice acting available.

With all the handholding, I am surprised that some other elements of the game are not explained so well. Had to google to find out where to get those tickets for the crab food vendor. I still don't know how to level the gear, suddenly my shirt etc. got second abilities.

Not a fan of progression in MP shooters though I am not sure how bad it is in Splatoon 2 yet.

Do most folks here put the switch to sleep? Or completely power off?

And my pro controller won't wake the switch from sleep. I have to push the button on top of the switch. Is that normal?

I just put it in the dock without doing anything else.

Remember that Golf Story only shows the point of first impact for the ball, and not even adjusted for wind and your QTE skills. Once the ball comes down, the slope of the ground also plays an important role in how the ball will continue.

If you need the ball to stop as quickly as possible, after pressing Y and adjusting your reach with up/down (and ZL, ZR or both if it's a short approach shot or long putt), press X, move the dot to the bottom of the ball, then also press R so that the shadow is on the bottom of the ball while confirming with A. This is the maximum possible amount of backspin you can add to the ball. Be aware that the ball will now travel very high into the air, so wind will influence it quite a bit more.

Anyway, with that, the ball will come to a stop as soon as it can, possibly (depending on your stats) even rolling backwards.

The material the ball will hit drastically affects how much it will bounce. Pavement or green will let it hop along without worry, while deep rough or bushes will immediately slow it down, so aim your target marker for the first impact to land in those if at all possible. Also consider aiming for a treetop - the prediction line will accurately show how your ball will react.

Most of all, don't be too greedy. Space your shots so that you can use a wedge well below 150 yards on the last shot to the green. If you have trouble with overshooting, try to go for short distances/use the approach shot function with the Z triggers to impact as little forward momentum to the ball in the free range mode to get a feel for it. Finally: Invest into some other stats than power.

The in-game explanations for the actual controls and golf mechanics are plain horrible.:maf

I beat Golf Story a few days ago. The only part that I found frustratingly difficult was landing a drone.

I got lucky with the final tournament and opened with an eagle then a birdie. After that I just played it safe and scored pars on the subsequent holes.

yeah, for some reason Golf Story is really quite bad at explaining itself. I ended up finding that can change my shot from Normal to Power and bada-bing finally beat that final tournament.

Overall, it sorta feels like Earthbound, but with some gameplay in it. It has just one trick really, and it really lacks polish (the music is pretty bad) but it really invests in its personality, even if it's a bit uneven. Though for $15 it was a good spend. I enjoyed it. When they make a sequel I'd be interested. If it was a full priced game though, I certainly wouldn't be singing its praises.

Oh right, yeah, the powers are never really explained as well. Unless you read through vague item descriptions and somehow connect the dots.

Bugs are really annoying in Golf Story, too. I had stuck autosaves that somehow skipped the last ten minutes I had previously played, a ball that bounced perpetually off the ghost at the mansion, getting stuck in the little kid at the beach (no pedo), a hung loading screen, and a bunch of other issues.

For 15 bucks it's OK, but yeah, a sequel better stay at or below that price point. And preferably get some QA under its belt before release.

...still not groking the controls of Snake Pass. I am completely and utterly shit at being a snake.

I connected my switch to the tv yesterday and lol, that docking station is some cheap garbage.

I was wondering if that's on purpose so people are forced to buy some obscenely expensive Nintendo accessory to prevent scratches. But no, browsing Amazon I found only the same docking station, sold separately for 80 bucks  :rofl

Nintendo really has no shame. Well, just one reason more to play the switch in handheld mode indefinitely...

Yeah sure, I could do that. Just wanted to bitch about Nintendo a bit is all :P

What I'm probably gonna do is, I'm gonna apply some velvet or felt strips or something. Maybe that'll do the trick...

You can't do that, afaik. But there are 3rd party docks out there.

This is what the dock contains. The important part: Megachips STDP2550 Mobility DisplayPort (MyDP) to HDMI Converter

But you can't just get a generic converter for that, either:

There have been replacement docks that also feature a TV out for sale for some time now. Some require you to take the original dock and detach the original Nintendo tech, others have apparently reverse engineered whatever Nintendo has done and offer their own hardware.

I think Nyko offers a home brew solution, but I haven't heard complaints yet, it looks better than the original, and it only costs half the price.

Fake edit: yep.

I've read reports of all these various third party docks, including the Nyko one, either not working properly, frying the USB C ports, or killing the Switch entirely.

If you fear the cheap knock-offs, just get one of the plastic shells where you put the innards of the original dock inside. :smug

Nyko also seems to offer a pretty generous replacement policy where you get a new switch if their dock fries yours, at least according to their AMA. Which, obviously, isn't binding in any way, but still. Should count for something.

Nyko dock is shit, I owned it and returned it after a week. Do not buy, it could potentially fry your Switch as well.

So it's always been a dream of mine to be able to take a good WRPG mobile. I didn't find the Baldur's Gate mobile editions really all that doable with smaller screens, so I'm damned excited about Skyrim on the switch. But honestly, I'm sorta worried about the load times. I don't care about graphics, haven't ever really. But does anyone know what performance is going to be like on this? I can see it being a disaster.
