Oh god, I had completely blocked this from my memory.

Hopefully they fix this :lol

The worst part had to be where Fi said stuff like:
"What should we do in this ROOM, it looks like there is a DOOR. Where is the KEY. Oh look there is CHEST maybe you can shoot an ARROW here"
*camera follows along to show you the solution to the puzzle when you enter the room*

I was watching the feed with 15 minutes left to go and the video disappeared. I refreshed and it said that it was made private.

derp.

Last thing I saw was Raji. Oh well. I guess they will upload a version without the wait time at the start. Kinda dumb though to not let me finish the last 15 minutes.

Raji looks right up my alley, the ancient India setting is extremely appealing, art direction looked great, and gameplay looked fun.

Also Manifold Garden looked nice, giving me Area 4 of Rez vibes.

The rest was kinda meh... haven't really been too big on indies lately.

Both the Wii and PS360 versions of Forgotten Sands (completely different games) were pretty good actually. Wii version is worth tracking down, and you can buy it digitally on the other platforms.

3D world is better than Odyssey. Captain Toad levels were icing on an already delicious cake.

Odyssey is a nice diversion catering to that subset of loud and bitchy collectathon fans that can’t enjoy anything else except for the Mario 64 formula, but Mario platformers moved forward with the Galaxy/3DLand style of games and hopefully the next main Mario is a continuation of either of those styles.

:stare

Odyssey might be the best Mario game next to 3 and World.

Its platforming is the best 3d Mario has even done. The collectathon is infinite in variety despite the sheer amount, and it oozes Mario charm. I say this as someone that was very skeptical of the project and it might be in my top 5. It eclipsed Galaxy, already in my top 5, quite easily.

More over, your argument is bizaare because 3D Land plays nothing like Galaxy.

3D Land is also balls until the post game. An absolute snooze fest that forced you to beat it to get to the good part.

I got NSMBU, a game I've wanted to play for yeaaaaaaaars for my Switch and it's fucking boring modern 2d Mario tier shit in the same league as NSMB and 3D Land. Doesn't help I literally did a Mario 3 run on my switch pro controller last night. One game allows you full control and is predicated on detail. The other is a modern copycat of that formula without the same degree of success. I forgot in modern 2D Mario doesn't allow you to hit ? blocks with strategy anymore. In 3 if you hit an ? Block on the left, the mushroom goes to the right If you hit it on the right, it goes to the left. Combined with frantic platforming action and you have a recipe for godlike platforming. The first world of Mario games should never be challenging but they should be fun. NSMBU's first world put me to sleep.

I'm already regretting not getting Tropical Freeze instead. Next time.

Da gawd

Hopefully it gets better because if this keeps up I think may have to say,"Nintendo don't bother with modern 2D Mario. Stick to 3D for the love of God if this is the best you can do."

:yeshrug
When comparing the two I just prefer the 3D World/Galaxy style of level design and gameplay loop.   As landmark of a game as Mario64 is, I just don’t find that collectathon style of game as compelling anymore, and feel it kind of peaked with the first Banjo-Kazooie.  I still enjoy SMO and am happy that others love the game, but for me it was a little bit of a letdown and I hope Nintendo will make a new game in the Galaxy or “3D” line of games sooner rather than later.

Also: I fall into the Jeremy Parish line of thinking that the double-whammy of NSMBU/NSLU is the best overall best of the 2D sidescrolling Mario series, even with the dumb and shitty music.

3D World plays nothing like Galaxy. Galaxy gameplay is predicated on curate your own path platforming.

Also Galaxy is still a collectathon. You still need to gather stars to beat the game and unlock new content. It literally uses the Mario 64 gameplay loop. It's the levels that are different which are less open courses, but even then the game emphasizes open ended platforming and features numerous big levels with an emphasis on exploration or mini games.

3D Land takes 3d Mario and puts it in 2D. This entirely limits Mario's abilities and moveset. Odyssey's lineage is the same as Galaxy/Sunshine/64 of open ended platforming. 3D land style limits the player to the courses design.

Essentially Galaxy shares more in common with Odyssey than it does 3D Land/World.

The existence of hat jumps makes this even more clear.

Galaxy follows the same lineage of platforming. As did Sunshine, and it all comes from 64.

3D Land/World courses are mostly designed around linear obstacles. They feature none of the open-ended platforming seen in these videos. They're plain jane and a big reason we they didn't take off like other 3D Mario's is because they're an inferior 3D Mario. 3D except not really.

Compare with that Galaxy and Odyssey footage with this.

See  how even Galaxy is more open?

It's good, but there's very few ways to play it. It lacks an open-ended nature. 2D Mario allows a lot more options. In Mario 3 levels are designed so you can solve them in multiple ways. Yet here, here it wants to be 2D but also 3D Mario, but it's too linear and lacks in dynamic options. This has none of the benefits of 3D or 2D Mario.

I'd have to say you're in a vast minority here. If 3D Mario went more in the direction of 3D World after Odyssey I'd skip it.

It took me playing it high to accept I need to take NSMBU back to the store. I don't want to play this. Now it's down to Mario Maker 2 or Tropical Freeze. Given my experiences with modern 2D Mario are all bad, I think I'll go with Tropical Freeze. I wish Mario Maker had a demo so I could see how it feels. Frankly, I don't trust a single persons opinion on today's 2D Mario games. I'll have to watch more of Mario Maker before wanting to spend money on it.

Mario Maker 2's levels are short and gimmicky, mostly showcasing some of the new features you can do in the editor... though it'll be a bit unfulfilling if you're looking for a new 2D Mario adventure.

Tropical Freeze is just okay. A big problem I have with modern 2D Nintendo platformers:

1. The levels are often too long.

2.. lack of play style variety. I am beholdened to the games design, not my own whims and play style and/or decision making.

3. Too many collectathons. DKC always had KONG blocks but now they've got puzzle pieces and all kinds of crap. I don't care and this fucks with the flow of the levels. In the past, Nintendo 2D platformers were based on the idea of exploration (think Mario World switch blocks) which required repeat visits and keen observation to fully unlock the entire world. Now Nintendo's idea of secrets in levels is giving a puzzle piece or some other brain dumb shit.

4. Lack of previous flexibility. In the past DKC games I don't like to play as Donkey. I like playing as Diddy and Trixie. Together, with better level design, this is why I prefer DKC2 over 1. But here I can only play as Donkey. All of the extra characters so far only serve to give donkey extra air time or jump higher. This ties into lack of play style variety.

5. These games are too slow. Tropical Freeze is faster than NSMBU but holy shit. Between the bloated collecting and more these games just feel like slogs.

I honestly think modern indie platformers like Celeste are better platformers than what Nintendo has been doing.

I've been waiting to play DKTF and NSMBU for years. People have said shit like," NSMBU is the best 2D Mario since Mario World" "Tropical Freeze is one of the best 2D platformers of all time!" But both are just okay in the case of NSMBU and just good in the case of DKCTF.

With all this, and given other praises for Wii U that I missed, I'm gonna assume Wii U may be the most overrated Nintendo console of all time at this point? People were really that starved for Nintendo games they called Tropical Freeze a GOAT.

I'm on World 3. For me it's not an issue of difficulty. I do not feel in full control, I don't like playing as Donkey, having to press a button to grab is :wtf, it just feels bad. It's not really that fun. Forcing you to play as Donkey is bizarre.
