The brutal prison on New York’s Rikers Island has been home to some of the most notorious criminals in the city’s history, from serial killer David Berkowitz to John Lennon’s murderer, Mark David Chapman—and now it’s set to add Paul Manafort to its rogues gallery. The former Trump campaign chairman—who was sentenced this year to four years in prison—will be transferred there this week from a minimum-security facility in Pennsylvania, Fox News reports. A source close to Manafort reportedly told the network Manafort will be kept in solitary confinement, complaining: “He’s not a mob boss.” Manafort’s defense team will appeal the decision, which came from a New York State judge.

The Democrats are at it again

Quote
Mayor de Blasio, who is running for president on a progressive platform that bills New York as “America’s Fairest Big City,” deployed the NYPD on Tuesday morning to confiscate the electric bikes of delivery workers — costing them roughly one-week’s pay in fines.

Cops confiscated at least two delivery cyclists’ throttle-controlled bikes — which are illegal, despite widespread support for legalization in Albany and among cycling advocates in the city — in a sting operation on First Avenue under the 59th Street Bridge on Tuesday morning. The cyclists were detained and given $500 summonses — equal to a week’s wages, they say — and then forced to try to make a living without their main tool.

I've been listening to the Mueller Report on audible the past few days, it's really wild how sophisticated and intense the Russian interference was, and Trump just shrugging and saying whatever is probably a bigger issue and more suspicious than how he and his team were or weren't involved in the first place. This shit is like...cut off all diplomatic relations type shit. Not repeatedly trash your intelligence agencies while deferring to Putin in person and in public.

My thinking on that though is... yeah it's bad, but how much of it is just "business as usual" espionage and not some bigger thing. And I think that's the problem with this gaining traction in the states, especially if Trump keeps saying nothing happened. That'll end up being the narrative. Or "it was bad, but not that bad."

It was an active campaign targetted at our electoral process, not simply espionage, which is why it is and was not business as usual.

But the more long-term consequence is that Russia was basically the stalking horse for this shit going forward, for the US and a number of western countries. They were bold enough to run the tests, and the results are in. Which show plainly that as long as you don't engage in a textbook legal conspiracy, and you have the tacit endorsement, or indifference, of one political party, there are basically no consequences for engaging in this behavior.

Russia, toward the US in particular, has basically invited a green-light toward foreign election interference and anyone willing to try and coordinate with those campaigns.....Shit sucks

The Trump economy is collapsing, Last chance to sell all your stocks and jump into gold boys

Quote
ADP private-sector job growth tumbles to a 9-year low in May

The numbers: Private-sector employers hired just 27,000 people in May, payroll processor ADP said Wednesday. That badly missed the forecast of 175,000 jobs from economists surveyed by Econoday.

What happened: Small business slashed 52,000 jobs in May, ADP said. Medium-sized firms added 11,000, and large companies added 68,000.

Goods-producing industries shed 43,000 jobs, mostly concentrated in a 36,000 loss for construction; while the service sector added 71,000.

“The economy’s weakening,” ADP architect Mark Zandi said on CNBC this morning.

I'm wondering what specific industry or political concern is getting in the way of it. Are democrats trying to keep the fracking industry from being a liability in midwest states? Are they worried some of the topics brought up will become weaponized against Democrats, like the Green New Deal whitepaper was? Are they trying to protect Joe Biden from looking like a weak candidate? There's a lot that could have gone into the decision making.

if the second I guess because they don't think there's enough voters care? Or it isn't a major issue to them? Idk
They're not that dumb. Nobody stares down the barrel of a progressive conflagration without having a good reason to do so, not in this election climate, not after 2016's DNC fuckups.

When they want to do things to appease people, they do. Look at all the shit they jammed into the DNC platform (Hillary wasn't going to do most of the things her representatives conceded to). Also look at how Pelosi handled the "climate sit-in" at the very beginning of the year. They probably genuinely think it's a political risk.

I think the most likely reason is having a dedicated debate would potentially alienate voters who think climate change is a highbrow or liberal issue. Imagine how you'd feel if the Republicans had a dedicated debate on tax-breaks. It's the same thing. It's not like there won't be any climate change questions during the general debates, though, there were plenty during 2016.

I was thinking less that they don't think climate change is a serious problem than it doesn't fit their conceptual mold of an issue you center an entire debate around, a la the economy or foreign policy or whatever because it wasn't in the past and what passes for the party apparatus is eternally stuck in 2004

I used to be so much worse. In early 2017 I really hit it off with this prison reform activist and fellow Kings fan. She was kind of a rough type and had her bona fides as a professional protester. I told her that, I, too, was interested in prison reform. We had a genuine heart to heart exchange about our mutual liberal ideals and she told me about how her last activist boyfriend broke her heart. A week later I sent her this article I thought was An Interesting Idea at the time: from The Atlantic, a Third Way in Respectability Politics. Never heard from her again. This is a true story.

It's not just them, tbh. Our government and parties are struggling to adapt to change, and you see that reflected in some of the candidates platforms and speech - Yang's List of Ideas and Mayor Macrons supreme court Big Think.

ed: i suppose this isnt that new but it feels like every dem candidate has some blatant How We Need To Fix America platform or speech or op-ed and its manifesting in neolib dork Neat Ideas, or good old fashioned petitioning america to tax the richers

I don’t disagree with you at all about any of this, but how do you suggest/recommend true progressive ideals to be marketed to the masses to make it more palatable, thus making it electable?  Who are some politicians that we can get behind that have a chance?

I don’t want to feel so defeated by the candidates we have right now, because the more defeatism out there the less likely we defeat trump.

You guys are pretty out of touch if you think climate change policy is something that is going to win elections. It’s merely used as a wedge to get a portion of the base motivated and engaged.

There is more leverage in keeping it a hot topic that is always being “held back” by the other side then there is of making some kind of Green Deal.

If change is going to come, it’s going to happen at the state level or through EPA mandates.
