Bloomerg wins big on first primary over peter and bernard!

Quote
One woman told me that, given the president’s accomplishments, she didn’t care if he “fabricates a little bit.” A man responded to my questions about Trump’s dishonest attacks on the press with a shrug and a suggestion that the media “ought to try telling the truth once in a while.” Nintex, a 34-year-old maintenance worker who had an American flag wrapped around his head, observed that Trump had won because he said things no other politician would say. When I asked him if it mattered whether those things were true, he thought for a moment before answering. “He tells you what you want to hear,” Nintex said. “And I don’t know if it’s true or not—but it sounds good, so fuck it.”

Thinking about a Bernie Sanders Presidency makes me realize that it would be a bad thing for the Democrat party. It's going to be very easy for critics to marginalize any thing that he does (however small) and it will be very tempting for centrist Democrats to use him as a pivot in order to gain more support in their districts.  A similar thing happened to Jimmy Carter while he was in office.

I know supporters of his don't give a shit about this, because they just want to vote for a person they believe in. But, I understand why there is such a backlash within the party at his potential success. That Chuck Todd quote (that people are freaking out about) made me analyze why he would feel that way.

Honestly, I think some uninspiring chud like Biden or Bloomberg will be far worse for the Democrats in the long term.

We’ll be seeing “there is no real different between democrats and republicans” by 2022 and the R’s will be back in business.

Honestly, I'm so sick and tired of worrying about how the next Presidential election or mid-term's gonna end up [however many years down the line that is] and trying to divine what the proper vote should be to influence that. I'm gonna vote for the person that I think has the best ideas for RIGHT NOW.

I love when people like you point to Jimmy Carter from 70 fucking years ago instead of, I dont know, Donald Trump who molded the entire party into his image.

I don't think that Bernie would be able to remake the Democratic party easily as Trump nor would I want him to since Trump's main accomplishment is a cult of personality.  There's something to Republicans falling in line and Trump hasn't challenged the capital interests at the heart of the party.

Still I hope that Sanders would be different than Carter.  He would be championing a new organizing story about what America means and millennials and zoomers will hopefully save us.

Also Jimmy Carter represented the center-right of the Democratic party and his main opposition within the party came from liberals. This was all out in the open and pretty well understood at the time.

I don't know why anyone would use what Chuck Todd says on TV to trash a political candidate for his bosses as a measure to gauge how actual human beings feel.

I think most Dem elected officials would try to associate or disassociate themselves with a president Bernie based on how well he does (and how well his programs poll) in their district. As with any other president.

If we had room for another party due to a parliamentary system with proportional representation we could have a leftist party making its case without James Carville scaring the shit out of everybody.  Our constitution has a lot of in built conservatism, but I think that the two party system goes even farther in fighting off new ideas than was hoped for.

I do think that Bernie will be able to get student debt forgiveness done.  M4A will be a righteous struggle that really will require a revolution.

Counterpoint: After a big surge, Bernie's running at 30% within the Democratic party. In a multiparty system with PR he'd be heading a party with 15% of the vote that would be a junior partner in a center-left coalition (or opposition to a center-right coalition). Because of the two-party system and the game theory of the primaries, he might be able to translate that 15% into running the executive branch of the whole dang country.

Justice Dept. to Seek Shorter Sentence for Roger Stone, Overruling Its Prosecutors

President Trump had complained that the recommendation of seven to nine years in prison for his former adviser and longtime friend was a “miscarriage of justice.”

No idea. At this point, who would stop him? Remember when he claimed he had the power to pardon himself, too? Wonder why he doesn't preemptively do just that, including for future crimes. Since the constitution doesn't specifically say he can't issue preemptive pardons, that must mean it's legal.
