As much of the blowhard as the guy is, I have to admit he's done an incredible job convincing mid 20's stemlord-types that he's the second coming off of a laughable track record.

Yea, but he does it more efficiently and at lower cost than the previous/current dependents.

If you really wanna talk about the government teat...(what he's saying isn't new though)

if he were simply doing it for profit or to maximize returns for his stockholders, I doubt he would've come so perilously close to bankruptcy so many times

Defense contracting and green energy (in markets like the U.S. where the true costs of fossil fuels are subsidized by the state) are sectors where private viability is even more of a pipe dream, though. Lockheed Martin is to corporations as South Carolina is to states.

The kind of real talk here is that the best delivery vehicle is still a repurposed ICBM from the 50s despite how many billions and Nazi war criminals were thrown at doing better. It is nice that someone is at least tackling the whole "space junk" thing with their design, however.

As a techie engineer type I have never really understood the hype around Musk. People think he's some kind of real life Hank Scorpio/Ghandi hybrid but he seems like just another rich SV investor. He just decided to invest in manufactured products instead of phone apps or slave labo- the "sharing economy".

It's not like Tesla or SpaceX are even platonic nerd ideals of what a workspace should be like.

Like most things, he most definitely falls in the middle of the two options given. He's not at all some supervillain/hero but he's much more devoted and eloquent compared to SV investors. The dude has huge ambitions; ambitions that NEED to exist in our day and age. He runs a company that can effectively reach these ambitions.

But he does fall prey to typical business and political misgivings and issues. Bill Gates did, too, and everyone loves that guy now.

I don't think people will find many well adjusted individuals successfully pioneering for what they believe in. Carl Sagan is the only person i can think of that would fit that mold. Musk and his business seems to have a lot of fuckery but overall i would say that he is a net-positive just for the cultural shift towards marketing "green" technology and space exploration.
