A guy who made an awful payment system whose only noteworthy component was that you didn't have to send money orders to strangers by post anymore if you used it and runs not one, but two (formerly three) fabulously unprofitable businesses that suck off the government teat is not humanity's last hope.

I love the idea that he's doing SpaceX out of the goodness of his heart to preserve humanity. Sure hope his stockholders agree.

As much of the blowhard as the guy is, I have to admit he's done an incredible job convincing mid 20's stemlord-types that he's the second coming off of a laughable track record.

Yea, but he does it more efficiently and at lower cost than the previous/current dependents.

If you really wanna talk about the government teat...(what he's saying isn't new though)

(further reading on the cause can be found here)

I love the idea that he's doing SpaceX out of the goodness of his heart to preserve humanity. Sure hope his stockholders agree.
if he were simply doing it for profit or to maximize returns for his stockholders, I doubt he would've come so perilously close to bankruptcy so many times
Money doesn't seem to be the main motive for a guy that could've easily "retired" after Paypal alone

Defense contracting and green energy (in markets like the U.S. where the true costs of fossil fuels are subsidized by the state) are sectors where private viability is even more of a pipe dream, though. Lockheed Martin is to corporations as South Carolina is to states.

The kind of real talk here is that the best delivery vehicle is still a repurposed ICBM from the 50s despite how many billions and Nazi war criminals were thrown at doing better. It is nice that someone is at least tackling the whole "space junk" thing with their design, however.

As a techie engineer type I have never really understood the hype around Musk. People think he's some kind of real life Hank Scorpio/Ghandi hybrid but he seems like just another rich SV investor. He just decided to invest in manufactured products instead of phone apps or slave labo- the "sharing economy".

It's not like Tesla or SpaceX are even platonic nerd ideals of what a workspace should be like.

Sure, but at least he's not a vengeance-riddled gay vampire like Thiel.

Like most things, he most definitely falls in the middle of the two options given.  He's not at all some supervillain/hero but he's much more devoted and eloquent compared to SV investors.  The dude has huge ambitions; ambitions that NEED to exist in our day and age.  He runs a company that can effectively reach these ambitions.

But he does fall prey to typical business and political misgivings and issues.  Bill Gates did, too, and everyone loves that guy now.

written by a fremont resident, no surprise

in all seriousness, musk's intensity is well documented, even in his biography
is this really exploiting the working class though if they're still being compensated and taken care of, comrade?

Interesting that this is what broke the camel's back but that's not a knock on Elon. Apple, Google, and friends are all angry, so perhaps they could use some job creation as leverage against ol Trumpo

Yeah, "why" is the question to ask. Trump isn't interested in listening to ANYONE, and Elon on board just was another way for Trump to rub one out over his own branding efforts. "Oh, yeah, I've got the BEST billionaires in my cabinet."

Elon is tapping out, realizing Donny is just using him.

I don't think people will find many well adjusted individuals successfully pioneering for what they believe in. Carl Sagan is the only person i can think of that would fit that mold. Musk and his business seems to have a lot of fuckery but overall i would say that he is a net-positive just for the cultural shift towards marketing "green" technology and space exploration.

In the future we will have our own personal drones to run all of our meatspace errands for us.  No need to hop on some antiquated railway system (lol 19th century) or a self driving car (lol 20th century).

We'll also have our own personal sexbots and probably live in a tube.

What is SpaceX's end goal? Mining? Aren't rocket launches terrible for the atmosphere? Or is it a net improvement from terrestrial mining?
