Animes were more interesting in the nineties because it felt so raw and new. 

Also animation quality was at its peak.
Late 90s and first half of the 2000s anime had some of the best animated films of all time, but then it all went downhill (Ghibli notwithstanding).

Look at something like Jin Roh or the Patlabor movies or Memories or Ghost in the Shell or Blood the Last Vampire, the animation quality is just on another level.
Not that people can't animate like that anymore (the Blade Runner 2049 short, Letter to Momo etc) but it doesn't seem like it carries the same weight, besides, it's all shitty love stories like Shinkai now.

TL;DR: Decent anime died with Satoshi Kon.

Anime went through about a decade [2005 to 2014, roughly] that was really bad. Some decent movies still, but a huge chunk of what was on TV was really mediocre. The past 4 or 5 years have been a lot better, though.

My dude, the anime was fun, i agree, but the manga had entire chapters of fucking, piss drinking and other general insanity.
All his comics are kinda fucked tbh (Lastman, Deaman, etc).

Anyway, now that i think about it, lately i've watched a couple of anime series that were real good: Ping Pong, Devilman Crybaby and (not recent but whatev) Monster.
Ping Pong in particular was real pristine.

The first two Patlabor movies are very good (second one especially is great).
Jin Roh is great, too.
Memories is fun, and Millenium Actress is Kon's best movie.
Also you mention that Howl's stinker, and don't mention Kaguya?

One thing about anime fans is they don’t know how gauge other’s taste and how to precieve things. Like I’m an anime fan and I love mecha shit. I’m not going to recommend everything I like to people.

Like when I was a teen my mom wanted to spend time with me and we like watching things together. So I put forward watching things like Bebop and GiTS Stand Alone Complex because my mom likes westerns, action movies, and true crime stuff. I’m not going to ask her to watch Gundam or say Harahui.

Anime fans want to just throw you into the deep end and have no awareness about their medium. It’s cool, but I mean it’s not for everyone and some things are more palpable for people.

That said my anime fandom is a bit more casual and since I got into it in the 90s and with things like Gundam and Escaflowne I like action and mecha shows and little beyond that. I got into anime as an extension of my interest in things like Star Wars. The girls and things you’d describe as male wish fulfillment don’t interests me.
