Peers in practice never meant anything than fellow sound-of-mind citizens eligible under whatever criteria is in place (no prior conviction is fairly common IIRC) and with no bias. Otherwise you'll never find a jury or judge for that matter that could even be remotely qualified to rule on any complex matters.
It's up to lawyers to present the facts and bring in expert testimonies so that the jury can make an informed decision.
Restricting juries to just professional peers would significantly increase the risk of corporatism and bias creeping in. Would you like cops only be left at jury of cops ? (When one get puts on actual trial every blue moon).
Also create issues of even being able to assemble a jury in Bumfuck, Countryside.
