Was listening to Ziggy Stardust for the 999th time and was struck how visual it was and how it's obvious this influenced a lot of heavy metal lyricism.

Googled and found this <3

Cyndi... You should give some of the euro death metal a try :Leon

Asphyx-The Rack
Dismember-Like An Everflowing Stream
Emtombed-Left Hand Path
Amorphis - The Karelian Isthnus

Holy fuck I’m loving this. Euro death > US death?

A lot of those picks I’ve already listened a bit to, Esch. Loving it.

Going to give Behemoth the real test today. Their live shows seem so amazingly macabre and artistic. Love it.

Also still diving deep into King Diamond even if it’s not death metal (?)

The riffs Suffocation has are :delicious

One “problem” with death metal is that songs feel like they bleed from track to track. The music is so brutal and atmospheric I feel like they could use more transition between tracks to set each song up. The way it works in Abigail or stuff like the intro to Number of the Beast.

I think I’ll be enjoying melodic death metal a *lot* if given a proper chance for this reason.

:bow

I listened to them almost two months ago and just. didn’t. get. it. Now my ears have been opened! :rejoice

The build up :lawd

That atmospheric horror :lawd

A lot of death metal bands go 100 all the time, and while there’s a place for that, I also want highly cinematic horror fests.

I just don't fucking get how I didn't like death metal at all almost two months ago but am loving it to pieces now. I'm liking it more than black. Has the darkness with none of the nazism/edge.

Listening to thrash for like two weeks must have helped the process even further.

Need more of this in metal. Going full bore into power metal after death metal.

Manilla Road have come the closest with the lyrics, but Dio has come the closest with the pure musical storytelling.

What about a space opera:

So omnicient, that if there were two omniciences, he would be both.

I love rock opera. I'll give this a whirl. Metal opera sounds :delicious

Lots of metalheads online have suggested the following bands to me:

Slipknot
Korn
Linkin Park
Marilyn Manson
Dragonforce

Tell them to kill themselves.
LMAO, I'm going to generally agree with this sentiment and I had a few Korn albums when they were a thing. Hey they hit when I was a bitter teenager and they made some weird cool noises with their geetars. I'll still go to bat for Manson's first LP Portrait of an American Family. That warped psychedelia. :rock Linkin Park is shitty american Pop Will Eat Itself, fuck them.I think the general belief is that Slipknot is Mushroomhead for dummies but they may have some tunes, never looked into them. For Dragonforce, uhhh, check out this band called Rhapsody that bust out a full medieval orchestra if you want your dnd brutality? This has been me going on about a genre I generally consider myself to barely know anything about even though Brutal Legend had several of my favorite projects on its ost. :lol

With all the hyperbole and bullshit aside, I still maintain that Slipknot and Mudvayne are both legitimately great metal bands that got unfairly tarred with the nu-metal tag.

Yes, they have some shit in their catalogues, but both have put out some excellent metal.

Just because some record exec decided to shit out a million bands that tried to emulate Korn, doesn't mean that all the bands from that era were garbage.

It's like saying that Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots and Pearl Jam are shit just because a bunch of shitty grunge was released at the same time.

Slipknot's Iowa album is basically death metal and Mudvayne have more in common with Tool than nu-metal.

Fight me...

I won't fight you because I've never listened to them, just been turned off by their aesthetic.

But if there's one thing heavy metal - and by extension, a lot of this year - has taught me, it's to try not to judge things based on a perceived conception. I thought heavy metal maybe wasn't for me besides stuff like Metallica and Megadeth (my first metal bands) until I decided to dig deep into what it had to offer. Combined with a few other things happening this year like my love games for returning by giving things an open-mind, and I have literally no reason to not listen  to these ill famed metal bands and subgenres. I have to see if they're for me before making a decision first.

I youtube'd this and it's not a bad song but nothing really catches my eye/ear either.

I've come to really dislike the rednecks in Slipknot, and their music for the last many years leaves a lot to be desired. But Iowa is just one of those albums for me. Seeing them when I was 11 or 12 the first time, no doubts helps my opinion of Iowa, the live show was actually fairly chaotic and fun, far from what it is today, and the music was still wild for someone like me. The nostalgia reasons for liking it is obvious. So maybe that is the reason for it, but damn I still really like it.

Anyway stop trying to impress on tindr ok?

My thoughts on In Flames: they're ok. I'm listening to a song now with a fucking acoustic. I don't mind that in thrash or regular heavy metal but this doesn't sound like death metal taken to an melodic core. It sounds an entirely different metal genre. I'm not the biggest fan. They sound more prog than death metal. I'm with Esch.

I come back to it every few years and it hits the spot every time. Right amount of cheese that I encountered at the right time I guess.
