I can't quite get why acknowledging Sasha Grey was a very famous pornstar (if a bit overrated) was sexist. I mean, Resetera can't let go off some out-of-context quotes some minor Internet personality said eight years ago but saying Sasha Grey did porn is sexist?

They pretty much branded it as shameful past that can't be alluded to which is quite ironic.

This is the part that made it extra funny. Her name isn't Sasha Grey! That's a stage name. You pick a stage name in porn so you can drop it and disappear. She dropped porn but kept the stage name and uses it for everything from normal acting to music to writing sex-romance novels to these gaming streams. So even if you knew nothing about her, it's clear she doesn't find it shameful. If you do know anything about her she has long talked about how she did porn because it was fun to her. She does want to be known for more than porn but she's never said she regrets it or spoken ill of it other than when she was backing up some fellow people in that whole "feminist porn" thing. And then they were never condemning porn, but simply industry practices at the time.

It's another example of where they ape progressive things they've seen without ever looking into any of it and then just come off as prudes. Nobody in the thread was condemning "sex work" they were making joking references to someone famous for a lot of things that aren't simple "sex work" as Sasha was fucking nuts* in porn. Yet somebody clearly got butthurt about it and had to protect the wommins who are not Sasha Grey. This isn't even accounting for the fact that the rule is most likely there because there are ResetERA.com users who make shitty porn under the same username they use on ResetERA.com since I can't imagine a situation in which users on a "progressive forum" would be "condemning sex work" in a way that wouldn't be triggering to some Westerner. You would never be banned for condemning third world sex work that's essentially slavery would you?

Cops want to play military and use all the gear and equipment but without any of the rules/guidelines/training that the military still follows pretty strictly. Here's the thing. If someone makes a bigoted or inflammatory post, do we wait every time for someone to try to educate them? What if there are dozens in a thread, which can happen if there's a fast-moving, controversial thread. Do we wait for users to try to engage each and every single one before we decide to ban them?

If we do this for each and every bigoted or inflammatory post, what does that mean to the minorities who have to read and endure these posts?

Pardon my bluntness, but this is a silly and entirely impractical idea for a lot of reasons. If someone breaks the terms of service or posting guidelines in a way that merits a ban, they should be banned. Period. That's not 'being trigger-happy', that's enforcing the rules of the forum. Adding arbitrary waiting times on top of that only serves to lengthen thread derailments, increase hostility, and burden the communities most directly affected by the behavior. This "I'm sure I can convince them to stop engaging in the ban-worthy behavior they already engaged in!"-idea is silly. How long should staff have to wait before banning someone who engaged in a ban-worthy offense? How many people should 'get the chance to convince them' before staff can finally ban them? One? Two? Three? As many as you deem it necessary for each individual case? What if nobody shows up to 'defuse the situation'? Now think about how all this immensely complicates moderation on the staff side, necessitating moderators to monitor one specific thread for an arbitrary amount of time to see if anyone shows up to 'convince' or 'defuse' the one specific user in question, thus diverging their attention away from the rest of the forum. How long should they let these types of discussions play out for? What if the user does not respond? Should the user be banned only if they explicitly and harshly double down, or should they be allowed a third chance to retract? What if one user's ban-worthy behavior feeds into another user engaging in similar ban-worthy behavior in part due to an apparent lack of moderator action? Should staff just allow threads to be derailed to be entirely about this one person's behavior? Should one person's determination to 'defuse' the situation overrule all other participants of the thread? Should staff burden vulnerable communities with having to 'defuse' behavior that harms them before they ban the user engaging in that behavior?

There's absolutely been times where people have been engaged by others by the time staff got their eyes on a situation, and in those situations, that engagement is absolutely taken into account in weighing how long - or even if - a person should be banned, but it is entirely impractical to expect a blanket policy of a mandatory and arbitrary waiting time for each and every ban, not to mention that it makes the communities most directly affected by the behavior feel less safe and secure on this forum.

When I see staff members, both former and current, talk about how much time they spend moderating the forum and how much of a toll that is or was on them, it does make me wonder if maybe you should have more staff members than you do? Mist mentioned earlier in here that some staff spent their entire day yesterday going through reports, and I feel like if you had more people, then that load could be lightened and perhaps it wouldn't cause you all to spend hours and hours of your day going through reports.

40 staff for over 48,000 members seems like a really low number to me, less than 0.1%, and when I see people saying that they spend most of their days helping to moderate the forum, that makes me worry that you are all burning yourselves out really fast trying to keep up with everything you need to deal with here on a daily basis. This forum is big, tons of posts and threads are made each day, and you're all doing great work keeping up with it as is, but it still doesn't sound healthy to me in the long run, it just seems like a disproportionate amount of stress is being placed on you all to me, and that makes me worry about you

I know American laws allow a lot of thigs because of the holy freedom speech, but still surprised there haven't been more lawsuits.

Back in the day a guy we banned from the forums tried to send us a personally drafted "cease and desist" lawsuit threat by mailing it to the address of the domain registrar on the WHOIS. (Which was just a server farm, not their business address I guess.) Even though there was an actual address and name for one of the admins also on the WHOIS.

A girl I really really like and had a major crush on said that she's not really interested when I asked her our last night. I was really hoping she would be up for going out, as I love her character and who she is. And she is also one of the few people I actually know here in Sweden that I'm interested in keeping in touch with, with most others being random people from work.

Haven't slept, been overthinking a hundred situations of how maybe I approached her wrongly or didn't choose the right moment, or who the hell knows what.

Also having a birthday in a few weeks when I turn 29 and not really having any friends to do anything with over the one month of vacation I have coming now for the holidays, is kind of hitting me hard. With all the burnout from work, I can just sense a self destructive period coming up again, just as I managed to get out of one.

I have no regrets as those are pointless and all the mistakes I've done have made me who I am now, but stuff like this drains the life out of me and makes me question whether coming to Sweden was a good choice. Feel like leaving all behind and running away again as I did before I came here. 🤷

Having just rewatched this for the first time in like eight years, it's even better than I could have realized, it doesn't pull any punches in regards to just how truly, utterly miserable this holiday can be. I'm trying to avoid derailing the thread too much, but if calling her a witch is sexist than moving one step from that should be too. Mocking her voice is apparently a 3 day, and in a previous thread calling her a cunt is worth just a warning, so I'm not sure how the grading in this class works.
