A thread in which we are discussing how best to handle bigotry isn't the place to talk about how certain kinds of bigotry aren't so bad. Do not hijack the thread over a single ban, given this is not what this thread is about.

Please don't shutdown people over valid concerns regarding ResetEra's ban policy. Of course a big part of what this thread is about is directly co-related to ban reasons and how to (and not to) post here by following this website's guidelines as "safely" as possible. It isn't rocket science to conclude that there's a clear confusion in how moderation works and the linked thread clearly exemplifies that.

On a side note, did you ever think of an official way to allow banned users to reply to a ban reason, even if via PM, to hear from them in a more thoughtful manner? Again - and this has been said here several times before - sometimes bans feel unnecessarily harsh because there's a clear view from most of the user base that the offending user acted out of ignorance, was being naive or joked about sensitive matters when the situation clearly didn't allow it. It could be one way to minimise RE's tarnished "brand" of being overly moderated, often to the point of unfairness.

An just to make sure I don't hit a nerve with the mods or admins, this is absolutely my opinion and feel free to completely disregard it.

Hey, mods, we're gonna need some clarification here. What exactly is the "inappropriate commentary" in this post? Is it calling Hillary a ghoul, or is it the "they're insufferable" part? Because "ghoul" is not a sexist term and SurrenderDorothy should not have been banned for it. "Ghoul" has nothing to do with Hillary's appearance, it's not specific to women, it's not even unique to her. It's an increasingly common insult thrown around online for politicians that people don't like.

It doesn't seem like any particular posters were being attacked in the post. If that's the reason for the ban, then we need clarity on it so we know what the bounds are.

I probably have over 1000 hours put into them combined. Do your shit. It’s normal to be astounded by that hour count because it’s...well astounding. It's an ongoing discussion about how people who graduate from certain universities get most of the jobs in government and corporations and you can only get on those universities if you're well connected and wealthy.
There's a still a higher class in general even though the class system doesn't exist on paper anymore. But being privileged in the UK goes way beyond just the narrow definition of the color of your skin or your gender.

Friends is also a popular show and yet it still has problematic scenes that would seem dated at best today if not actually bigoted. The popularity of a show should not prevent people from examining the issues it has. As dreams stated, the reason for the ban is clearly stated in the lock message. He was not banned for simply liking a show, but rather his response to a particular scene. We're fully aware of your argument, but that doesn't change the fact that sometimes jokes can perpetuate racist stereotypes. Would you find it too far for a black member to feel offended at white users laughing at a scene where Michael is in blackface, and they think it's hilarious that he's "unfiltered"? Not to mention that there is something to be said about how the show does not truly hold Michael accountable for his actions, and even sometimes depicts him as someone to sympathise with.

There is a history with these kinds of dehumanising racist depictions that often makes people of colour extremely uncomfortable. The post was reported and discussed by various Asian people in the community and team. We will continue to discuss it with Asian members of the team during the ban review process.

Even if you disagree with the ban, please understand that staging a protest about it in this thread of all places is highly inappropriate and insensitive. If you wish to continue discussing it, you're welcome to reach out to a Mod Captain.

There's definitely a balancing act involved. If the team is too large, it can be difficult to manage, and there are more chances of slip ups and mistakes as a result. But on the other hand, yes, not enough hands and things can get very taxing, especially over time.

We are actually looking for new members of the team at the moment. Both for perspective and also to help out with activity. We also take whether a new candidate could help with certain timezones into account at times. We've been actively discussing new candidates, so you should hopefully see some new faces on the team in the coming weeks. ^^

Sometimes, though, it isn't so much how many people we have, but certain periods of the year can get very busy, and people also have real life commitments or emergencies that pop up. We also advise everyone on the team to prioritise self care and take breaks when needed. That can be difficult at times when you can see the team and community really needs you, though. But we still try our best to strike a balance.

Although "ghoul" has been used against politicians before, the context changes when it's used specifically against a woman (especially an older woman.) The reason for this is because could be considered an attack on her looks. However, after further deliberation and given the ambiguity of how the term has been used, we've opted to lift the ban. We ask that people be more aware of how their rhetoric comes across in the future.
