Speaking of flattening the curve, I don't know if anyone noticed but we're actually at capacity already in several states. Alabama was already reported but Illinois is another state in a shortage.

https://covid19.healthdata.org/united-states-of-america/illinois

Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia... many of these states can't handle any more cases

Almost all of Canada is doing pretty good except for Ontario, which seems to be going into a second wave, and Quebec, which never even peaked (so about 23m of 38m pop is doing poorly).  All the Maritimes are doing extremely well, even Nova Scotia, which was a worry in mid-late April.  Manitoba continues doing great.  Saskatchewan should have been able to be as good as Manitoba and it hurts my pride that wasn't but their cases are falling again after a second outbreak.  Alberta and BC and kind of plateaued at hospital bed usage.  The Maritimes, Manitoba, and maybe Saskatchewan could actually get to the point of doing containment.

E3 is dead. There's no way it comes back as this game only thing that was progressively not catering to companies, big and small.

You might have the bigger companies informally agreeing that the summer is a good time to release a bunch of info at the same time. We're just not going to see a week of new information and 100,000 people attending an event anymore.

The industry is still in need of these events and get togethers like the GDC and E3 as a lot of business is done between publishers and developers behind the scenes.
In some cases it is the only opportunity for some devs and publishers to meet. However, it probably won't be the big 'video game reveal' show for consumers anymore and focus more on the business side of things.
E3 was always about the convenience of having the developers, publishers, retailers, investors and journalists from all over the world in one place.

That's ultimately why GamesCom won't ever be 'as big' no matter how hard they try. By August every developer is in crunch mode and very few bother to go to Europe.

i mean, i know the ESA's been trying to cater to everyone and failing, but what was the worst that's happened so far? Sorny not attending? well they didn't attend last year either. i know geoff keighly said he wasn't going to show up either, so that was kind of big and also a bummer. but 95% of e3 hadn't changed and 95% of publishers/developers were still showing up.

i know a lot of the big names stomp their feet loudly, complaining about how e3 is done, but this isn't really a new thing. remember back in the day when they had a much smaller and more 'professional' e3 and that abomination that was e4all? they were both such embarassing travesties that everyone came running back the following year.

edit: mostly agree with nintex

yeah but didn't that happen before the corona stuff? it was the virus that caused them to cancel it, not publishers dropping out from the data leak.

Pretty much every country has covered it up because no one has actually bothered(or has the resources) to test everyone that passed away to see if corona was the cause.
Most countries have started to 'adjust' those numbers but it's all pretty vague. Then there's also people with multiple conditions.

If someone with lung cancer dies of corona is cancer the cause or corona?

Russia lied about the deaths in Ukraine, their recent failed Nuclear test and many other such incidents.
It's not exactly shocking news that they might be covering this up too.

The tests detect the presence of viral RNA, even when there's not enough active virus remaining to infect someone else.

It detects materials that are not viable enough to infect anyone.

I believe the infections happen mainly when the virus load is high in the mouth nasal mucosa. From coughing, sneezing and aresol emission. In the typical course of infection the virus travels down into the lungs (this is where it can get dangerous). The virus load in the mouth nose area reduces greatly during these process, as does infectiousness. As far as i know people often stop being infectious even though they are still in hospital in bad conditions.

The most infectious day is actually the day before the outbreak of the virus (e.g. the day before the symptoms show up).

The fucked up part is that restaurants etc. have to write down the contact information of every customer. So they're able to trace the infection chains. This didn't apply to the church  :brain

Went to park yesterday (doggo walk) and there was a football game going on.  Zero social-distancing going on, including a small crowd watching.

Also went to my parents' house for dinner.  We brought our own food/drinks and sat on the back porch six+ feet away.  My mom told me that they had a table and chairs set up for this already because they had friends over the night before.  Went and got shit to disinfect everything before sitting down.  Then they tell me that they're not doing this with friends again- one of them has cancer and is high-risk, yes despite this had gone to a nail salon the same day and was saying how there were lots of people inside.

Then we went for a walk.  All the neighbors were out and distancing themselves, but their kids were all running around in everyone's yards and playing with each other, so not sure how that makes any difference.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — With Brazil emerging as one of the world’s most infected countries, President Jair Bolsonaro is deflecting all responsibility for the coronavirus crisis, casting blame on mayors, governors, an outgoing health minister and the media.

By contrast, he portrays himself as a clear-eyed crusader willing to defend an unpopular idea — that shutting down the economy to control COVID-19 will ultimately cause more suffering than allowing the disease to run its course. The refusal of governors to fall into line with his decree allowing gyms to open, he said, verged on authoritarianism.

Quote

Since the outbreak started, the Brazilian leader has avoided acknowledging the potential effects of his actions, particularly in undermining local leaders’ stay-at-home recommendations. A rare exception came in mid-April, as Bolsonaro appointed a new health minister tasked with sparing the economy from the coronavirus.

“Reopening commerce is a risk I run because, if it (the virus) gets worse, then it lands in my lap,” he said.

Less than two weeks later, as Brazil’s death toll blew past 5,000, he told reporters, “You’re not going to put on my lap this count that isn’t mine.”

People were dropping out of E3 even before it became apparent Corona was gonna shut it down. Nintex is right for a change that E3 and GDC do serve the purpose of allowing for business meetings that are very important, especially for smaller less known devs. All the other aspects of E3 are generally easier and cheaper to accomplish without an in person trade show. Trade shows as a whole are looking pretty unlikely for the next year.

GDC's problem is that it is expensive to go to, in the most expensive city on the planet possibly, and doesn't pay its speakers. The parts that can't be easily replaced are the parties and the face to face business meetings.

Deaths "Not By Natural Causes" have plunged during the Lockdown. These reductions in deaths are not taken into account in excess death estimates. If they were, there would be 15,000 to 20,000 additional deaths, beyond the current "excess deaths" estimate of 130,000 to 140,000.

Even without taking the effect of "Deaths Not By Natural Causes" many states are under-counting. Death counts are > 1.7X higher in more than official counts in 25 states.

Using official numbers, taking Stockholm county's deaths and population into account, that's an IFR 1.1%, which is inline with the numbers from NYC, the UK, and Spain.

The IFR for a Western country is ~1%. If excess deaths are taken into account (and these numbers don't factor that deaths "Not By Natural Causes" have plunged) the IFR is closer to ~1.5%.

eeit:
Danish seroprevalence with random sampling indicates 0.5-1.8%. This puts the IFR in Denmark somewhere between 0.5-1.7%--1.1% is the middle figure--equal Stockholm's.
