wait, i get not being sick again once you got the virus. but how the heck do you not transmit the virus after you get better if you still test positive for it?

The tests detect the presence of viral RNA, even when there's not enough active virus remaining to infect someone else.

It detects materials that are not viable enough to infect anyone.

I believe the infections happen mainly when the virus load is high in the mouth nasal mucosa. From coughing, sneezing and aresol emission. In the typical course of infection the virus travels down into the lungs (this is where it can get dangerous). The virus load in the mouth nose area reduces greatly during these process, as does infectiousness. As far as i know people often stop being infectious even though they are still in hospital in bad conditions.

The most infectious day is actually the day before the outbreak of the virus (e.g. the day before the symptoms show up).

Several bars/restaurants up on the mountain were caught completely off guard by the decision to reopen by the county, and are remaining closed because they were in the middle of various forms of renovation projects :lol

The fucked up part is that restaurants etc. have to write down the contact information of every customer. So they're able to trace the infection chains. This didn't apply to the church  :brain

Went to park yesterday (doggo walk) and there was a football game going on.  Zero social-distancing going on, including a small crowd watching.

Also went to my parents' house for dinner.  We brought our own food/drinks and sat on the back porch six+ feet away.  My mom told me that they had a table and chairs set up for this already because they had friends over the night before.  Went and got shit to disinfect everything before sitting down.  Then they tell me that they're not doing this with friends again- one of them has cancer and is high-risk, yes despite this had gone to a nail salon the same day and was saying how there were lots of people inside.

Then we went for a walk.  All the neighbors were out and distancing themselves, but their kids were all running around in everyone's yards and playing with each other, so not sure how that makes any difference.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — With Brazil emerging as one of the world’s most infected countries, President Jair Bolsonaro is deflecting all responsibility for the coronavirus crisis, casting blame on mayors, governors, an outgoing health minister and the media.

By contrast, he portrays himself as a clear-eyed crusader willing to defend an unpopular idea — that shutting down the economy to control COVID-19 will ultimately cause more suffering than allowing the disease to run its course. The refusal of governors to fall into line with his decree allowing gyms to open, he said, verged on authoritarianism.

Quote

Since the outbreak started, the Brazilian leader has avoided acknowledging the potential effects of his actions, particularly in undermining local leaders’ stay-at-home recommendations. A rare exception came in mid-April, as Bolsonaro appointed a new health minister tasked with sparing the economy from the coronavirus.

“Reopening commerce is a risk I run because, if it (the virus) gets worse, then it lands in my lap,” he said.

Less than two weeks later, as Brazil’s death toll blew past 5,000, he told reporters, “You’re not going to put on my lap this count that isn’t mine.”

yeah but didn't that happen before the corona stuff? it was the virus that caused them to cancel it, not publishers dropping out from the data leak.

People were dropping out of E3 even before it became apparent Corona was gonna shut it down. Nintex is right for a change that E3 and GDC do serve the purpose of allowing for business meetings that are very important, especially for smaller less known devs. All the other aspects of E3 are generally easier and cheaper to accomplish without an in person trade show. Trade shows as a whole are looking pretty unlikely for the next year.

GDC's problem is that it is expensive to go to, in the most expensive city on the planet possibly, and doesn't pay its speakers. The parts that can't be easily replaced are the parties and the face to face business meetings.

Deaths "Not By Natural Causes" have plunged during the Lockdown. These reductions in deaths are not taken into account in excess death estimates. If they were, there would be 15,000 to 20,000 additional deaths, beyond the current "excess deaths" estimate of 130,000 to 140,000.

Even without taking the effect of "Deaths Not By Natural Causes" many states are under-counting. Death counts are > 1.7X higher in more than official counts in 25 states.

Sweden's Public Health Agency last week released the initial findings of an ongoing antibodies study that showed that only 7.3% of people in Stockholm had developed antibodies against COVID-19 by late April. Tegnell later described the study's figure as a "bit lower than we'd thought," adding that the study represented a snapshot of the situation some weeks ago and he believed that by now "a little more than 20%" of Stockholm's population should have contracted the virus.

Using official numbers, taking Stockholm county's deaths and population into account, that's an IFR 1.1%, which is inline with the numbers from NYC, the UK, and Spain.

The IFR for a Western country is ~1%. If excess deaths are taken into account (and these numbers don't factor that deaths "Not By Natural Causes" have plunged) the IFR is closer to ~1.5%.

eeit:
Danish seroprevalence with random sampling indicates 0.5-1.8%. This puts the IFR in Denmark somewhere between 0.5-1.7%--1.1% is the middle figure--equal Stockholm's.

Hotels are opening up here on the 4th! It's on, guys!

The hotels have been open, at least Hiltons, because they've been sending me offers.

Aren't all the casinos still closed though?  What would be the point to visit?

So long as we compartmentalize aging and end of life into a hidden institution staffed by underpaid precariat, the problem can't ever be solved. Only a dramatic restructuring of family relations, the resurrection of the extended family, a robust national pension, and communal society can change this.
