I don't understand how one gets so psychologically wrapped up in a rape allegation. People get to the point where you can see it plain as day on their face, "I really hope he raped her" is the thought that is plastered on their forehead. They wonder why their community is on the edge of self destruction, meanwhile, these idiots can't help but torture themselves with self imposed mind fuckery that puts them on the side of hoping for the worst. They get so personally involved in the worst possible outcome that when the dust settles, they end up looking legitimately sociopathic in their desire to be correct.

Its like a coworker of mine who was making bets on the death toll from coronavirus. He bet high and would check the daily deaths and get disappointed if it was lower than expected. The difference being that he quickly realized that is poison for the mind and cut it out.

The problem on Era is that poor moderation is doubled down on instead of owned up to. They never will admit to mistakes and unban those who did not deserve it. It’s fracturing the community.

Y'all just need to accept that shit is not going to change and moderate your posts accordingly. Y'all want it to be one way, but its the other.

You should know by now what topics you can post free thoughts in and which you should keep your mouth shut and fingers locked until more information comes out. The moderation isn't going to change because the "worst" thing that could happen is they stifle dissent regarding false accusations. Whereas the opposite could allow for this site to become like reddit or GAF or any other place on the internet where racism, sexism, homophobia, and all manner of hatred is allowed to fester. It may not be fair, but this isn't a court of law its a video game discussion board.

Now, you may feel upset because someone you support or like is being labeled as something you feel is not certain. But trust me, those individuals don't need you to defend them on a video game discussion board. If you really feel strong about publicly supporting them, well Twitter still exists as does reddit and the rest of the internet. Go there and voice all your doubts and support if you feel stifled. But, when you're here then you need to hold your keypad and realize there is a bigger picture the site is trying to protect and so the individual poster is meaningless.

At the end of the day, if the accusation or whatever turns out to be false you can have your gloating moment. But you casting doubts on this board, especially in the early stages of a story, can only lead down a path where initial support for victims turns into a public inquiry.

If that's the direction forward for this site then it's no better than an alt-right echo chamber forum. Stifling civil discussion is not the way to go, bud.

The truth is we speak of moderation like it's a hive mind but it's not. Some moderators are great. Some moderators are incompetent. Some moderators are fair-minded, others are not. Some are too easily outraged, some are more chill. They're human.

So in the end, getting banned or not is too often a luck of the draw thing. And if you're a mod and you see your "comrade" ban someone for something you wouldn't, you're not going to side with the poster about it. You'll let it go. Again, it's human. Even if we give cops shit about the thin blue line thing. Cops are human.

Some places over-ban, some places under-ban, no forum is magical. This place definitely over-bans. Yes there are lots of assholes, nazis out there but there are also people with bad hair days. There are also misunderstandings. This place definitely needs a smarter approach to its moderation system. Thread quality has gone down from where it was as a result of smart, yet abrasive people leaving. I've seen people say sensible things and be banned.

I think Ya'll need to try and innovate. Come up with better forms of punishment, or more granular forms of muzzling people out of line. Just relying on current policies and best judgement is not enough. I feel there is a whole technological aspect to this that is being woefully under-used.

For example. Some people post very low quality content. One liners. Old shitty memes. They do nothing ban-worth but they clutter threads with time-wasting filler. Why not limit those people's post number per day to encourage longer posts instead of one-liners? Quota system in general seem like something worth exploring. Both for creating threads and posts.

PoliEra, despite its flaws, was an excellent resource for progressives who wanted to stay informed with news and analysis through a curated flow of information. The vast majority of posters there were progressives whose views were far to the left of the majority of the country yet were willing to work with pragmatic choices when necessary.
