Yes the cop should have potentially gotten himself or someone else stabbed by just running up and grabbing the girl you all are fucking distinguished mentally-challenged
It sucks that she died but the cop was totally justified
It's a young girl just feet away with her back turned attacking someone else. He also had backup. It wouldn't take much for a grown man (even less a trained officer) to disarm her. He could've just as easily killed the other girl or someone else opening fire in the middle of the neighborhood the way he did.
Having said that, it's an understandable mistake given the split-second situation he was in. It's not a Chauvin-style murder or even a criminal mistake, but his days on the street should be over. His instincts are questionable, and this incident might only cloud them further.
A young girl who seems to weigh more than the officer, wielding a knife in a frenzied state, well inside the space designated by the 21-foot rule. She was clearly about to commit, at the very least, attempted murder, and given the circumstances there's nothing the cop could do but shoot considering she posed an immediate, grave threat to another person. Any of us can sit here and watch a slow-motion replay of the incident and pick it apart, but he didn't have that opportunity. He reacted correctly according to his training.
Could the training be better? Absolutely. I'm of the mind that cops shouldn't be forced to choose between either a taser or bullets. In almost every situation such as this one, you could achieve the desired effect (stopping the threat) with rubber bullets or other less-lethal rounds. The fact that they're not standard issue and required to be carried alongside the taser and handgun is mind-boggling to me.
And for anyone saying "just tackle her!"...well, I mean...
