Do you guys think Neighbors is gonna be watchable? I can't figure out if I'm tired of Seth Rogan yet, but I have a feeling this film could push me over the edge.

It was pretty good, and the only part of the movie that didn't feel like Generic American Military Action Movie #37.

there was a way, way, way better version of the mountainside cliff fight in another 2013 sequel to a goofy arse blockbuster.

Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon is a prequel to the earlier (and also awesome) Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame.  Here's what's cool about them, you'll better understand the original film if you watch the prequel first.  Its a prequel that actually works better as a first installment, and not as a belated pre follow up to a later film, even though it came out later.

Enough explanations, you wanna see a florid, period piece mystery adventure with lots of cheerful derring do and some good comedy, you're at the right place.  Wanna see some very imaginative special effects and action setpieces, this is where you'll find them.  Want to see Tsui Hark making movies worth watching again after pretty much the whole decade of the aughts, this a great place to start.  The films are somewhat analogous to the Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes films, but I'd say they're a fair bit better, they're certainly more fun to watch.

and yeah, that cliff side fight in this one is pretty damn cool.

Afflicted - canadian found footage film about two vacationing people in France when one of them is turned into a vampire.  suffers from all found footage cliches (why are you shooting this?  why are you still filming this? etc etc etc).  It does have some good stuff in it, the transformation is slow and has a heavy emphasis on body horror, but it's not ground breaking by any means.  the film takes a few turns, but the limitations of the found footage form are really put on display here.

About Time: Charming and clever Richard Curtis drama/comedy about a man who can travel back in time in his own life and re-do anything he likes. Usually he manages to make things better, but other times there are consequences. Bonus points for cleverness across the board. Fewer points awarded for failing to expose more of Rachel McAdams. In fairness, though I frequently don't like her as an actress, she does  a good job here throughout.

Whitewash - Thomas Haden Church kills a man with his snowplow while drunk then makes a series of increasingly poor decisions which lead to him hiding out in the deep woods of Canada during winter trying to survive.  It's not great, but it's not really terrible.  Competent I guess?  I wouldn't watch if if you have better things going on.

Grand Piano - It's phone booth in a concert hall, but if you can get past the absolute goofiness inherent in the concept, you'll find that it's actually really fun with some very clever filmmaking and a few genre twists which make it worth watching.  I'd say see this over Whitewash

Hostel Part 2.  Far far far better than the first film.  I wasn't a super fan of the first one thought it was ok, so when I read reviews which praised this one to the high heavens I was somewhat cautious over their claims but goddamn if this isn't just so much better.  It really flips a lot of the tropes established by the first film and its many instant imitators and the characters are far better than the first.  Highly recommended, even if (perhaps "especially if") you didn't like the first one.

caveat: if you like torture porn and are only going for the kills etc then you will probably be quite disappointed.

The budget was like 5.5 mil so I was pretty surprised how non-cheap it looked (it still looked cheap of course, but not like, Clerks and shit.) It's definitely 90's though, the last half of the movie's LA setting really doesn't help that.

Really good music score too. I was surprised.

I watched Ti West's The Sacrament and it was really disappointing coming off of The Innkeepers and House of the Devil.  It's well made and all, but it's just a note for note telling of Jonestown with different names, and since it's a fake documentary, it made me want to watch any of the several great documentaries on the subject.  Being a fake documentary also means it's not particularly interesting looking.

Watching this immediately before watching The Sacrament was a bad idea.  It really is just Jonestown. He even straight up rips some of jones' speeches directly. The movie just seemed uninspired. Like he wanted to make a Jonestown movie but really had nothing to add or any unique vision for it. Disappointing even though it was competently made. I was one of the ones that loved the innkeepers so I had high hopes for this

yeah, it's dark knight returns-looking.  cowl is closer to the Jim Lee style.

looks out of the comic, sets itself apart from the Nolan suits, and contrast well with the Superman suit (textures, leather/rubber cape vs cloth).  not super optimistic about the movie but the suit (and car) look great.

also, throwing on a pair of black shorts to cover up that bulge wouldn't hurt.

they specifically shot that down because it got confusing with the Dark Knight Returns comparisons.  Dark Knight Returns is influencing some aspects of the film (costume, older bruce getting back in the suit,...batman vs superman).  but not the story, the attitudes, etc.

Affleck isn't near old enough to pull off old-Bruce just yet.

Kinda makes me mad THAT'S what they took from TDK Returns when they made Rises, and then they just fucked it up by having him mope over Rachel for eight years. Bleh.

depends on how old they make him.  Affleck's ~10 years younger than DKR Bruce, and ~10 years older than superman in man of steel.  he could play mid-to-late 40s in the movie.

I disagree. They can do a lot with makeup these days.

Plus, when I look at that picture it looks like Batman's suit smells like a week old fart, which is how Batman of TDKR looks.

So I think it's working.

Plus, Ben Affleck is an accomplished actor, and he's 41 years old. Given the toil of damage done to Batman's body, he would be comparable to a pro wrestler or former NFL player. His body would start to harden up and shut down in his early 50's, at the latest. It's very possible to age Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) ten years and make him an old, broken, decaying piece of himself.

ben's not as god-awful of an actor as people make him out to be, but i think we're stretching things just a wee bit calling him "accomplished".  he's "adequate" at best.  he seems to be a more talented director than actor.

He's accomplished in the sense that he has accolades. He's not the best, but he's not bad either. He's good.

Quote
Not since 2003's "X2: X-Men United" has this filmmaker tapped so effortlessly into his talent for comicbook gravitas, his ability to mine emotional resonance, pop poetry and (crucially) sly humor.

Quote
Bryan Singer keeps things moving along briskly enough that you can just go along with the ride of Superhero Stuff without getting bogged down in the labyrinthine plotting if you don't want to.

Quote
The epic and exciting X-Men: Days of Future Past is the biggest & best entry in the franchise since X2.

Quote
Even if Singer never makes one of these again, he can leave knowing that he delivered something that showed real growth, something that makes me think this series has plenty of stories left to tell.

Quote
That it all makes sense and is up there with the best X-movies is actually quite uncanny.

Quote
With style, heart and thrills, Singer has nailed the most ambitious X-flick yet. Popcorn pizzazz combines with X2's emotional sweep and something extra: a platform for the X-Men's screen survival.

Quote
Striking in its ambition, assured in its execution, and compelling throughout.

Quote
The best, most complete and most entertaining X-Men movie we've ever seen.
