Annie Hall

Actually one of the only Allen movies I haven't seen start to finish, believe it or not.  I adored it, mostly.  The performances by both Keaton and Allen were exceptional, Allen's being very surprising (I didn't realize how good he was).  There are some parts that show their age, particularly the split screen sequences that feel tired and overused in modern day films, but I'm sure back then for romance and comedies it was somewhat fresh, especially how they're used.  Also, some of the dialogue was a little to aware for its own good, even going by Allen's track record.  Still though, overall, a movie that definitely deserves its reputation.

The Fountain

I'm not sure I can get though this movie.  Half an hour in and I just think it's horribly lame.  I don't even know WTF is going on.

Yeah, that movie was real shit

After the many years of being in production, I had high hopes for The Fountain. Sadly, I was incredibly let down by the final product.

I liked it, but in my mind theres no question that each film he has done has gotten progressively worse. Granted, there isnt much of a step down from Layer Cake to Stardust, but there is a HUGE gap between Stardust and Kick Ass. Id like to see him take on another gangster movie. Lord knows he handles it better than Guy Ritchie.

Play Time

I can think of very few movies that are as clever, funny, and perfect as this. Every scene is packed so full of little details that just add so much to the overall experience. The look of the movie is just incredible too, particularly in the first half where Hulot wanders through a grey-and-black labyrinth, but the other parts look great in their own ways as well. I love this movie.

Predators -

Enjoyable. Decent action. Acceptably shallow characters. Good one-liners.
Biggest issue is the lack of Predator badassery.

I know a lot of people don't like AvP:R. Rightfully so. It's not a good movie. But it at least had the best on-screen Predator since the first movie. IMO that's still the case.  This movie didn't do a good enough job at portraying them as slick shit hunters.

I pushed through to the end of The Fountain.  I just read up on Amazon to find out what on earth it was about because I had no idea.  From the reviews there it's obviously a highly polarising film with lots of 5/5 and 1/5.  Unfortunately it didn't click with me whatsoever.

The Christopher Nolan B&W flick?  I enjoyed it, partially because it was a real showcase of what he can do just running around by himself with a camera.

I love watching movies like Following. Or Who's That Knocking At My Door for Scorsese or Duel for Spielberg....etc. It's fascinating to watch really early low budget movies of directors who become so much more. It's fun to watch where they start and what traits are there from the beginning.

The commentary on Insomnia is better than the movie. It shows the movie out of order, instead in the order they filmed it and Nolan walks you through each day of filming. It's pretty interesting.

F for Fake

I think TVC had some praise for this a long time ago, so it's been in my queue for quite a long time.  Wish I'd gotten to it sooner because it's pretty awesome.  The fast-paced editing and Orson Welles' conversationalist narration are the stars of the show, so it comes off as pretty self-indulgent, but I'm of the opinion that even footage of my mother taking a dump could be a masterpiece with Welles dictating the action.

Also saw Inception over the weekend; it was the real deal garbage.

Regarding Inception, I'm sort of annoyed by a lot of what I came away with, but I probably missed a whole lot of stuff, so I'm going to hold my tongue until I get to see it again.  It reminds me of how I felt leaving the theater after seeing Minority Report.

It's the same sort of thing; I really liked Minority Report, but at the same time I had to wonder why this happened, and why that happened, and what was the deal with that shit?  The plot is convoluted and the writing is too weak to cover it all.

Man I remembered this movie being better. It was okay but it just wasn't compelling and super cheesy. Entertaining though. I still know guys from high school that think this is the greatest movie ever and it's super deep and awesome. I thought they were kinda dumb before, but now I just wanna shake them and say "what the hell is wrong with you??"

The Village
I generally like Shayamalamadingdong on the basis of concept > execution alone (the happening omitted because it sucks and I haven't seen avatar). I liked this movie when it first came out, but I was slightly fucked up watching it this time and I kept lol'ing at Adrien Brody going full distinguished mentally-challenged fellow and Kitty from AD being in the movie and being named Kitty in here. I just kept thinking "SAY GOODBYE TO THESE, MICHAEL." But still, when this movie works, it works. The twist is absolutely horribly executed and Night can't get shit out of even good actors. But there are just some brilliantly awesome scenes. When Ivy is holding out her hand waiting for Lucius and the music is playing on a surround sound and Lucius comes running and grabs her hand and takes her to the cellar. Damn that scene is tense and so well done on every level. And fuck, he can create tension, but his hammy fucking writing works so hard against it. But he does a great job creating tense scenes regardless. I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY wish he would restrain himself and let someone else write his movies. He would be goddamn incredible, I think. I have a special place in my heart even for lady in the water but that's another story.

The Mothman Prophecies
Very cool premise. Despite some pacing issues, I really liked it. Not necessarily scary, but tense and interesting as hell.

I rewatched Minority Report just last week (while watching the world cup finale, actually) and still don't care for it much.

I also rewatched AI and I liked that more than when I first saw it.  I don't know why I was getting into early 2000 sci-fi stuff lately.
