The biggest factor in this is the editing, his movies are all edited in a very specific way, especially with the way the musical cues are treated. Since Sally Menke is dead, I'm curious how his new film will be edited, because those two's styles were like peas and carrots.

Sally Menke died recently so the editing won't be done by the same person now, there you go Tarantino detractors "change".

The outline of Anderson's next flick is,

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Set in the 1960s, a pair of young lovers flee their New England island town, prompting a local search party led by the Sheriff and the girl's parents to fan out to find them.
[close]

You could almost fill in the blanks from there, and that's a pretty broad start.

I can see the point with Wes Anderson, but Tarantino? His films are anything but predictable.

I agree; aside from all his films being pastiche of genre films, they're pretty unique from one another and stand apart from the movies they're making reference to.

That means nothing. Directors sometimes have distinctive styles, like Godard for example. And his style isn't always the same. Vol 1 and 2 are completely different from the rest and Pulp Fiction is NOTHING like anything in his oeuvre. The only similarities his films have is that they're dialogue heavy; and dialogue heavy scripts allows for different interpretations and styles. Even Kill Bill -- both volumes -- aren't really dialogue heavy so even THAT isn't true. Death Proof and Inglorious Basterds have entirely different types of film making techniques. IB is all about long takes, almost Godard-esque, Death Proof is all about escalation roaring into a fiery climax. Pulp Fiction has multiple narratives running around at once!

If you want to see what Tarantino looks like when it's not Tarantino directing, just get True Romance.

Sounds like I really should watch Inglorious Basterds. I love the rest of Tarantino's films, but I never watched IB because I don't care for war movies (same reason why I haven't seen Joint Security Area). Guess I'll give it a shot.

It's Basterds because there's already an Inglorious Bastards.

Also, it's not really a "war" movie in the traditional sense.

The bar is the best.

The opening sets the tone for the entire movie, and the bar scene really brings it home. Both scenes are those rare moments in film which are so engrossing, so suspenseful, I left the theater feeling like I'd almost been in a fight.

@Himuro: Ok I might be strechting it a bit with it being the same movie, but I'd like to see him let go of this style of his for even one movie. See if he could direct something completely different.

@Robo: Yeah that new Wes Anderson sounds good, I like his movies a lot (just as I like Tarantino), maybe I even like them more because I know what to expect from them.

That means nothing. Directors sometimes have distinctive styles, like Godard for example. And his style isn't always the same. Do you think Die Another Day is a better Bond movie than Casino Royale and Batman & Robin is a better Batman movie than Batman Begins?

Come on, they are over-rated on the internet but both are fine actors who both helped vastly improve their respective franchises they are best known for.

No to both, but this has nothing to do with their acting ability? A film can be good overall and still support shitty actors.

I strongly disagree, Daniel Craig is one of the lower tier Bonds, also Bale/Nolan is not in the same ballpark as Keaton/Burton. If you are talking only direct predecessors I agree. Through the lifetime of both series? Never.

Sorry, I don't even think the first two Batman movies and Nolan's Batman movies are even comparable.  Besides having a super hero named Batman in them they're entirely different.  Bruce Wayne/Batman are completely different characters between the two universes, the tones are completely opposite and hell, Batman Returns is barely a movie about Batman.  It's pretty much a movie where Batman just happens to guest star.

Bale makes a terrible Batman IMO.  I just never see him as it.  Keaton makes a believable Batman to me.  He seems more natural in the role.  Bale never seems comfortable in it to me.  It's probably a combination of bad dialogue writing, subpar directing and Bale being uncomfortable in the role.

Keaton pulled it off perfectly though.  He was able to work the slightly smug rich bastard who's not afraid to get his hands dirty.

Mups you weren't kidding when you said Kill Bill Vol. 2 was much better than Vol. 1.

Let's look at what happens in Vol 2:

- The crazy intro at the church
- Pai Mei sequence
- Live Burial
- The suitcase with the snake
- The fight between the bride and one-eyed
- The ENTIRE final 30 minutes
- Bill's death

Compared to:

- Waking up in hospital
- Going to take on Vivicia Fox
- One giant elaborate build up to the O-Ren restaurant fight
- O-ren fight

Vol 2 has much more stuff happening, a better narrative, arguably better writing and characters, and better action. Also, it's structured more like a kung fu film meets a westerner compared to Vol 1 feeling like this anime slash samurai flick.

Much preferred the dialogue, the action, the style, and the music in Vol. 1. Also felt there were a lot of throwaway characters in Vol. 2 such as the old guy pimp, the midget redneck, and Bud's entire character.

Saw the new Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

It was entertaining but the tension/pacing was flat.  There was never a sense of urgency and there was little to no buildup.  I didn't even know the movie was about to end because the pacing was flat the entire movie.  There's a tacked on ending too so I think they knew it.  It eventually ends
spoiler (click to show/hide)
in a stalemate so they tack on this gotcha moment that makes one side win.  It's completely out of nowhere and really pointless.
[close]

For anyone else that has seen it yet or doesn't care I'm going to discuss the ending in the next spoiler dammit, so be warned...
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Since I'm positive Moriarty doesn't die after falling off the cliffs with Holmes in Sweden then the movie really went fucking nowhere.  Depending on what they're using for inspiration he may or may not have died.  I'm betting on that he doesn't.  Moriarty is too awesome of a villain to kill off with really so little screen time.
[close]

The movie reminds me of Twilight: New Moon (fuck you homos, I know you've seen it too) in that it's obviously a stop gap between the first and third.  It almost felt like a waste of time.  It was entertaining though.  I'll just probably never ever watch it again.

Watched Bangkok Knockout on Netflix a few days ago.  The premise is essentially The Running Man set in the present for a private audience of millionaires to gamble on fights.  Takes a good while to get the ball rolling: a good half an hour before any solid action, but once it gets there, it delivers as promised.  Fast forwarding strongly recommended.  Between fights, there are occasional quick flashbacks to plot elements never mentioned in the set-up in an attempt to dramatize some of the match-ups, but they're more puzzling than anything else, and the things most curious, like a flaming Jason Voorhees look-a-like complete with flaming axe accessory, are never explained.

The end is amazing.  I don't necessarily mean in a good way, but it certainly amazes.  That's all I'll say.

I wish I could find some clips on youtube of the english speaking millionaires; their dialogue was one of my favorite things.  A portion of it is garbled behind horrible acting and strong accents and the other bit is complete nonsense.  The Russian guy in particular is hilarious.
