Just got back from Dark Shadows. As someone who used to watch the show when I was a kid I thought it started off ok but snowballed into a clusterfuck of "What the fuck" towards the end. Everything up until Barnabas return was pretty solid and had that Dark Shadows vibe to it (with some slight nods to Beetlejuice here and there), but after he comes back the constant "fish out of water" gags got pretty old after awhile. I guess it's better than Alice and Charlie, but still a far cry from the Burton of old. Elfman's score was once again forgettable as well.

Just sat down for a screening of Battleshits. Hopefully I can get some sleep.

Where does it rate on a scale of Aragon to Twilight?

Tell us, on a scale of "Awesome to AWESOME", how awesome is the US Navy?

That was actually the only good part. They used so many real sailors as extras, I saw my friend in one of the opening scenes.

Two new horror trailers. First is for the remake of Maniac with Elijah Wood(??) in the starring role. It's a bit NSFW and also a little grittier than I expected. The second is The Possession from Sam Raimi's production company. It's PG-13 so you can watch it all you want at work to your heart's content.

Quote
Speaking to The Daily Beast, director Ridley Scott has opened up a bit about his plans for Blade Runner 2. Most intriguingly, the beloved auteur flat out states that the film will feature a female protagonist.

The majority of the interview focuses on Scott’s past films and the prominence of strong female leads therein, so right at the end of the piece the interviewer drops all coy pretense and straight up asks the man about his plans for Blade Runner 2, presumably expecting to be stonewalled. Surprisingly, Scott is forthcoming and direct. “Funny enough, I started my first meetings on the Blade Runner sequel last week. We have a very good take on it. And we’ll definitely be featuring a female protagonist,” Scott said.

Sadly, that was all Scott said of the film, but the reasoning for his choice is quite well thought out. Scott, he claims, has always been drawn to strong women. “I’m used to very strong women because my mother was particularly strong, and my father was away all the time,” he said. “My mother was a big part of bringing up three boys, so I was fully versed in the strength of a powerful woman, and accepted that as the status quo. I think there are a lot of men who feel they’re being emasculated by having the woman be in charge; I’ve never had that problem.”

Though Scott may not have anything else to offer on the film, the other interesting bit of Blade Runner 2 news unearthed today does. Sort of. In a press release, Alcon Entertainment announced that actor/writer Hampton Fancher has been tapped to write the script for the film. Fancher’s name may not be familiar to most of you, but rest assured that he knows what he’s doing; the man wrote the screenplay for the original Blade Runner, after all.

Additionally, that press release is the first official confirmation we’ve seen that the upcoming film is, in fact, a sequel to the original Blade Runner. It claims that Blade Runner 2 will be set “some years after the first film concluded.”

My daughter and I are so hype for Spider-man, of all things. It's the first tent-pole movie of the summer to open in Japan, and a huge-ass poster went up at our local place about a week ago. Every time we walk past it she squees with excitement :hype

...which is a bit crazy given that she's 4 and a half but hell, I took her to Captain America and Tin-tin last summer and she had a ball.

Edit: I'm willing to give the new Spiderman a chance.  I didn't like the Tobey Maguire ones at all so I'm hoping these (I'm assuming there will be more than one) are completely different.

Edit 2: Am I the only one who doesn't give a shit about TDKR?  I was really hyped up for TDK but I'm left completely cold with this one.

Marketing has been horrible but I'm really looking forward to it, since it seems to be channeling more BB than TDK did. Although I am less hyped for it than TDK (again I blame the marketing.)

Me too at the moment and I didn't even watch Alien until this year. It comes down to the trailers for me.

Three Four Five years (holy crap it's been that long?! :-\) ago if you had asked me I would have said SM3 was my most hyped movie ever. The trailers for that movie were incredible. But that's their job.

I'm not saying "Prometheus = Spider-man 3 dur hur hur" of course, it's probably going to land well above 90 on RT, I'm just saying, trailers build expectations and are designed purely to make you fork over your money to see it. No shit of course, but I'd rather be lukewarm on TDKR and blown away than overhyped and underdelivered. As of right now I think it's a 50/50 shot I'll be let down by Prometheus in some way. Scott's record isn't pristine and Cameron has already erased any goodwill I had for previous sci-fi "greats" returning "back to the fold."

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Liked it but might need to watch it again tomorrow.  I was way too tired and the movie is constantly casually slow.  It's not a slow burn or anything; it's hyper normal, if that makes sense.

Last night there was a screening of Icon Eye, which is about Sun Araw working with The Congos, a legendary Reggae group, in their Kingston studio.  Rather than the expected "white dude goes to Jamaica and learns something about himself," Sun Araw is barely in it, as the film focuses more on The Congos, their family and the surrounding area of their neighborhood.  It's really, really, really fucking good.

I loathe Bob Marley.  I can't determine if it's because of his US fan base or the music, but both are so intertwined that I can't help but just wince whenever I hear any of the Bob Marley standards.

You're right it is. It's the recent Friday remake. It does have an asian dude fighting Jason in a shed and a porn quality sex scene. It's as forgettable as all the other Platinum Dunes remakes so that's probably why you can't remember it so well.

I remember kind of liking Jeepers Creepers 2 as well since it plays up the "monster movie" aspect a lot more. Though it was weird watching it knowing Victor Salva's history and seeing a lot of half naked teenage boys running around.

100% disagree

outside of like 3 scenes in the movie everything was as tired as a fucking jay leno monologue.  WOAH ANOTHER JOKE ABOUT WOMEN DRIVERS HOLD UP!  AHAHAHA ANOTHER CAMEL FUCKER JOKE? GREAT!!  cohen does a lot better when he's pulling out other's bigotry, rather then when he relies on it to make worn-out jokes.

That sucks.  This was one of the movies I was looking forward to this year.

The Departed

I was not prepared for the ending :o Also one of DiCaprio's best role and Nicholson's worst.
Why are you just now seeing this?

Duncan Jones Takes On 007 Creator
Moon man to make Ian Fleming biopic

Bafta-winning Moon director Duncan Jones is taking on the man behind James Bond: spy, journalist and 007-creator Ian Fleming. Yes, it’s the Moon-maker on the Moonraker-maker.

Jones’s third film as director – with his Liberty Films partner, producer Stuart Fenegan – will focus on the events in Fleming’s own life that inspired his books.

Though he became famous as the author of twelve Bond novels and two collections of 007 short stories, Fleming was himself a man of considerable mystery, co-ordinating real-life espionage in World War II and using his experiences as fuel for his iconic literary creation.

Babylon, This is the story of the children of West Indian immigrants living in Brixton / New Cross section of London in 1980.  Just hanging out, dealing with racism and basically growing up young and poor trying to make it.  I love how it shows a side of London that differs from what you normally see.  Really captures the squalor but also the fun of just hanging out with friends listening to records on a really loud soundsystem.  A very insightful review basically calls this London's Saturday Night Fever, and I can totally see it.  London hardly comes off as egalitarian with parents too busy trying to survive to police their children, casual racism from damn near everyone while trying to build and maintain a huge soundsystem on non-existent budget.
