Richard Ayoade's new film The Double is hard to sum up. On the one hand, it's an excellent little horror film with elements of comedy (or is that comedy with elements of horror?) that captures on screen the tone and mood of what i think of when I think "Russian Urban Novel", but on the other hand aloooooooooot of the film hinges on our sympathizing with Eisenberg as a Reddit Nice Guy / creeper / stalker. I'm still processing it after seeing it last night. Bonus cameos in the film from Chris O'Dowd and Christopher Morris (and J Mascis?! apparently Ayoade is a Dinosaur Jr fan).
This is a film that throws its artifice in your face. Think Brazil and other highly stylized films of that ilk. It's very well put together, but it was hard to enjoy, if that makes any sense?
