EoT is doing pretty well overseas. Hopefully it will inspire someone to throw a bunch of money at Paul Verhoeven and get him back on Scifi.

My brain: "WAT? It's Verhoeven? HOLY CRAP! When does it OPEN IN JAPAN?" -- then I checked IMDB.  :'(
I'd love for Verhoeven to get more work. The only piece he did that I'm not fond of is Hollow Man.

That's still pretty great, then. Reviews are saying it's on par with Minority Report, which I completely love.

Edge of Tomorrow was pretty great in the first half and pretty good in the second half.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Once Cruise lost his "power" the movie was significantly less interesting. Though I had a feeling they were hinting that he really didn't lose the power, but that didn't happen. Really very little happened at the end. They just accomplished their goal. Felt a bit of a let down.

i agree. i still think the very strong first half though absolutely makes up for the back end of the film.

agreed with both fistful and eric.  Very strong movie with an inoffensive but less interesting finale.  Tom Cruise was great.

I thought at the end

spoiler (click to show/hide)
that it was going to turn out that Emily Blunt got splattered with more time juice while fending off the alpha, and after Tom Cruise kills the Omega she would pull him out of the water and it would turn out that she had replayed that final battle hundreds of times to make sure he survived. I kinda felt like they were setting that up when she says "Thanks for getting me this far." Instead everything just reset and that was that. I feel like I made a better movie in my head, I should be the next Gary Whitta.

That's actually pretty interesting.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Especially because she dies so abruptly. Like, the Alpha just runs over to her and you see it tear her apart. Done.

I was thinking it was Cruise mostly because of the way he seemed to not worried about stuff and had the plan to use the plane even though he had no idea it would work. He seemed really confident it was function the way he claimed. As if he'd tried it a bunch.

Yeah, I'd agree that the ending was a little less exciting. I mean, I get it though.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The only way they could have a climax with any kind of tension is to pull his powers.
[close]

There are definitely better ways they could've done it, but whatever. The first 2/3 are super fun and of a breed of sci-fi action they just don't make anymore. Still movie of the summer.

UPDATE: ‘Star Wars’ Bombshell! Rian Johnson To Write, Direct Next Two Films

By MIKE FLEMING JR | Friday June 20, 2014 @ 11:55am PDT
Tags: Big Deals Film, George Lucas, Rian Johnson, Star Wars

UPDATE: ‘Star Wars’ Bombshell! Rian Johnson To Write, Direct Next Two FilmsUPDATE, 11:55 AM: Rian Johnson hasn’t commented yet on his monumental new task of mounting the next two Star Wars films. Even better, he has borrowed the spirit of another space film, The Right Stuff, that perfectly explains how he must be feeling as he processes the daunting task ahead of him. I think he’s up to it. Glimpse it below Deadline’s original scoop.

PREVIOUS EXCLUSIVE, 11:16 AM: Rarely have I seen the revival of a film franchise stir so much fervor as Star Wars, among hot young filmmakers who grew up loving George Lucas’ original film trilogy. In a bombshell move, I’m told that Lucasfilm is making a deal with Looper writer-director Rian Johnson to write and direct Star Wars Episodes VIII and IX. Essentially, that means that the intention is for Johnson to take the baton from JJ Abrams, who has gotten the space franchise off the ground and is right now helming Episode VII. I don’t know too much more at this point, but it is in keeping with Disney and Lucasfilm’s strategy of entrusting the venerable franchise to the best and brightest writers and directors, including the spinoff films that are being directed by Chronicle‘s Josh Trank and Godzilla‘s Gareth Edwards.

Rian johnsonJohnson will take over the core film franchise, and he’ll get started quickly and this will be his preoccupation for quite awhile. Technically, he’ll write that second treatment but the intention on both sides is that he direct the two installments. Joining him as producer will be Ram Bergman. Johnson made his directing debut on the respected indie Brick, and then jumped to mainstream science fiction by writing and directing Looper, an inventive time travel thriller that starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis. Bergman produced both of those films. It would be hard to imagine Johnson taking on a higher profile challenge than two consecutive Star Wars films. I’ll tell you more when I know it. Johnson is repped by CAA and attorney Stephen Clark.

Rian Johnson is a miles better director in just about every measure then Abrams, other then professional success of course.

Getting him was a smart move, but I'm personally dissapointed that now he's attached to this years long blockbuster apparatus that it'll be years before we get anything interesting out of him again (Duncan Jones syndrome).

his last star wars movie was good.

and what's the plan here? is it a third trilogy 7-8-9 or meant to continue forever? I know there are two spin-offs planned to have a star wars every year.  but like does 9 end, and they time skip another 30 years and bring in a new cast, or is it harry potter.

A new trilogy that will presumably end with most of the plot threads being capped off, along with standalone movies in the off-years. More movies will depend on how much money these six movies make.

so in the corpsmember lounge there are dozens of VHS tapes to watch and I found a copy of Assassins and decided to give it a look. Yes, the movie that this is from

before watching I didn't realize that it was written by the Wachowski bros and as the movie went on that detail became a lot more obvious. there's little in the way of real exposition and the movie is mainly about Stallone's character wanting to retire from the hitman racket. really the only noteworthy thing is this movie is Banderas' performance. he's absolutely batshit insane in this movie and it makes me wish he played the villain more often. if you think he's funny in the above scene, you need to see the rest of the movie. he totally nails this sense of maniacal anarchism that constantly made me recall Heath Ledger's Joker (for lack of a better comparison) and his exchanges with Stallone are perfectly biting.

for what is obviously action movie bargain-bin fodder, you could probably do worse.

Almost Human - Almost Watchable.  It's a riff on 80s alien encounter movies similar (though in no way as good as The Thing).  lots of violence, lots of ambition, little budget.  you could do worse, i guess, but this didn't really do it for me

The Haunt - nothing original, but nothing terrible either.  eh little ghost film.  Parts are effective, but it's done better elsewhere, so I'd say avoid.

Night of the Creeps - fukk ya.  still awesome. still fun.

Gary oldman shits on tdk in playboy interview

Quote
PLAYBOY: Really? You don’t like Sid & Nancy?

OLDMAN: I don’t like myself in the movie, no. Frankly, I didn’t want to make it in the first place. I was talked into it at the time. And now, if I flip through the channels and come upon it, it’s “Fuck! Sid & Nancy,” and off it goes. I don’t think I played Sid Vicious very well. I don’t like the way I look in Prick Up Your Ears. I wasn’t the right person to play Beethoven and turned it down half a dozen times.

PLAYBOY: The Dark Knight? Harry Potter?

OLDMAN: It was work.

PLAYBOY: Uh, The Fifth Element?

OLDMAN: Oh no. I can’t bear it.

PLAYBOY: You do realize you’re considered one of cinema’s all-time greats, right?

OLDMAN: It’s all so subjective, you know? I guess I shouldn’t complain. I’ve learned over the years that people get upset when they tell you something is their favorite movie and you go, “Really? You liked that piece of shit?”

Tom Cruise is Tom-Cruise-Crazy, but he's usually entertaining and any time he plays something outside his comfort zone, he's great. I'm a fan of his performances, even if I don't like his beliefs. I manage these same mental gymnastics for Prince, but haven't managed them for Mel Gibson.

Mel Gibson hasn't done anything recently to warrant overlooking his flaws.

Mad Max, Road Warrior, the first Lethal Weapon, Braveheart (homophobia aside), and Gallipoli would like to have a word with you.

I don't think a comic movie has ever offended me as a fan as much as Man of Steel. It completely forgoes any and every element that make Superman a compelling character and story, including his mythos and history in favor for a romance em up. Characterization is non existent. Clark doesn't really ever "walk amongst humans", he doesn't put on a mask or costume portraying human kind. He's only ever Superman and rescuing people, even as "Clark". His father sacrifices himself for his dream that Clark be a symbol for humanity and yet Clark travels the world saving random people so he can be easily traced by Lois Lane? So during the big fight, he blows up a gas station, decimates a town, and blows up a whole energy reactor to fight one GUY? I thought he was supposed to be a bridge between humanity and krypton, but he's destroying whole towns five minutes later? Where's Clark the reporter? Where's Superman and his intent on solving human injustice?

As a movie, it's a 5/10. As a Superman story, it's an easy 2/10. Holy Christ, whoever wrote this is a fucking HACK.

None of the fights have gravitas. They're trash. They're flashy trash, but shit. He levels a town because "you're not going to touch my mother" and doesn't give a shit about the aftermath.

Entire movie was hollow as fuck. Superman didn't need the grimdark reboot treatment, and that they're using this universe for the Justice League movie (sorry, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice) fills me with the opposite of hope. Dread? Loathing? Nihilism? Some combo of all of those.

It makes no sense. Superman is supposed to be fun. Even the comic reboot which has an emphasis on social justice and The military pumping enough gas into him to kill a city in the first few issues, it still never forgets its humor, or it's origins.

DC have lost their shit if this what they think people want from a Justice League movie. Christ, I think need to watch Avengers tomorrow to cleanse this from my system.

If I were going to direct a Superman movie, I would do it like a Godzilla movie. Focus on it from the perspectives of the human characters (Lois, Jimmy, Lex, and yes, Clark). The only lens you would view Superman through would be from a human character, like watching as he stops a plane from crashing as it zooms over their heads. The most you would ever hear from Superman would be a brief conversation of a few sentences as he saves Lois before he flies off again. I would treat Clark Kent and Superman like they were two separate characters. You'd never see Clark changing into Superman or anything, no parallels would be drawn between them, they would just never be on the screen at the same time. No cutesy "Oh Clark, you just missed Superman!" moments either. I think doing a film this way would be a good way to make Superman seem awe-inspiring again.

North Korea threatens war on US over Kim Jong-un movie

Quote
North Korea has promised "merciless" retaliation if a forthcoming Hollywood movie about killing Kim Jong-un is released, say agencies.

A North Korean foreign ministry spokesman said in state media that the movie's release would be an "act of war".

He did not mention the title, but a Hollywood movie called The Interview with a similar plot is due in October.

Hollywood actors James Franco and Seth Rogen star in the action-comedy film.

Rogen, who is also one of the directors of The Interview, has since responded on Twitter saying: "People don't usually wanna kill me for one of my movies until after they've paid 12 bucks for it."

Franco and Rogen play a talkshow host and his producer who are invited to interview Kim Jong-un, and are subsequently recruited by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to assassinate the leader.

The film's teaser trailer, posted on Youtube, shows a lookalike actor playing Kim Jong-un, as well as fight scenes involving what appear to be North Korean tanks and helicopters, and a nuclear missile launch.

The North Korea spokesman was quoted by the state KCNA news agency as saying: "Making and releasing a movie on a plot to hurt our top-level leadership is the most blatant act of terrorism and war and will absolutely not be tolerated."

He added that the "reckless US provocative insanity" of mobilising a "gangster filmmaker" to challenge the North's leadership was triggering "a gust of hatred and rage" among North Korean people and soldiers.

"If the US administration allows and defends the showing of the film, a merciless counter-measure will be taken," the spokesman was quoted as saying.

Writer and actor James Franco attends the premiere of Tribeca Film's 'Palo Alto' at the Directors Guild of America on 5 May 2014 in Los Angeles, California.

Kim Jong-un took power after his father Kim Jong-il died in 2011, which prompted a change in the film's script
Apparent evidence emerged last week supporting claims that North Korea is further developing its missile technology. Some experts said they had identified a new anti-ship cruise missile shown in a North Korean propaganda film. Other observers were more sceptical.

North Korea is holding three Americans in custody. The latest to be detained is said to be a tourist named Jeffrey Edward Fowle who reportedly left a Bible at a hotel.

Rogen recently said he was inspired by journalists' trips to North Korea.

He told Yahoo: "People have the hypothetical discussion about how journalists have access to the world's most dangerous people, and they hypothetically would be in a good situation to assassinate them."

He added that the film was originally about meeting Kim Jong-il, but they had to revise the script when he died in 2011 and his son Kim Jong-un took power.

Weird. Did nothing similar happen during TEAM AMERICA's launch, or was Jong-Il just that much less newsworthy than Li'l Kim?

Somebody tell North Korea that you only get to act belligerent when you have a leg to stand on.
