I mean, it's basically just Philip Glass, but I don't care because it works so well.

Starry Eyes is on Netflix now and is recommended slow burn horror w/ a great final act.

This was pretty good! Some good body horror shit and a bunch of excellent gore. That soundtrack was  :lawd

I liked it better the first time around.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
(I'm mostly just being a dick, I was pretty easily able to forgive the movie's clunky execution of its awkward sentimentality largely because of the score and I don't mind that both the movie and score are pretty blatantly derivative of better works.)

It Follows

+ Fantastic score
+ Somewhat well-differentiated characters
+ Didn't involve the adults more than it absolutely needed to
+ Minimalistic storytelling (especially concerning who "It" is in the pool scene)
+ "It" being corporeal made the movie much more appealing to me, this entity has "rules"
+ Amazing cinematography
+ Set design that blends the 70s, 80s, and 00s to create something that feels very uncanny valley - the place is familiar but at the same time we know it can't exist IRL
+ Characters are generally smart and don't waste a lot of screentime being "You TOTALLY can't be telling the truth!"

- Some shaky acting and weird/bad dialog
- Stupid decisions (yeah, approach the hole in the door, that'll work out)
- Fake-out jump scares (wall crumbling, etc.)
- Unsatisfying ending
- "Sex = It = VD" analogy gets way overplayed
- Doesn't capitalize fully on the concept of "It"

Kosinski, Wilde, and Hedlund are back and filming starts on October 3rd in Vancouver. :lawd

After so much "yeah, we have a story but..." and "we'll see what happens..." vaporware-esque lines it's SO GOOD to finally have this shit start getting nailed down.

So pumped. I fucking loved Legacy. :lawd

I’ll go and watch just for the Wilde in Tron gear. :drool

Kosinski has yet to prove he can tell a story though. Legacy and Oblivion were both beautiful and vapid, with no ability to stand up to post-viewing scrutiny of the story.

That article had a lexicographically awesome typo though:
‘Wilde’s Quorra was a living, fighting algorith who served as Kevin Flynn’s “apprentice.”’

I’m going to use “algorith” to refer to digital lifeforms in my next cyberpunk game.

Preservation is on Netflix and is worth a watch.  It's a little survival horror film that tries to humanize the attackers as well as the attackees.  It's not great by any means, but it has some fairly solid performances and set pieces surrounding it.  There is some D U M B character stuff in it which seemed injected as a means to force drama which reads straight out of a "how 2 scrnplay" book, but if you can ignore the few scenes in which it happens, it's still enjoyable.

Happened in the comics and it was great.

Bats has had anti-Supes suits long before the Hulkbuster was a thing. Also, Batman has beaten Supes a few times in the suit, unlike the Hulk"buster" which has never worked. :lol

Its the no reason part.  In the movie its all like 'there are too many we need the suit', he kills like 20 of the bad guys getting the the suit gets in the suit kills like 5 more then the suit is destroyed.

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For
Seems much sillier than the first movie. Watched it in hi-def thanks to apple's 99¢ special weekly rental, then went and did something else for the day, and when I woke up this morning, its 24-rental period had expired. I have no desire to watch the second half, and if I want to know the story, I'll go read the comic. It was worth 99¢ just for all the Eva Green nudity though. My goodness.

You're thinking too hard about this breh. No one remembers Kitty being in X2 when they recast her years later as the same age in X3 as Ellen Page. :yeshrug Or January Jones being like 35 in First Class in the 70s and 18 in Wolverine Origins in the 80s.

The secondary characters always get shuffled around a little with the hope that they'll be done "right" the next time.

It's the same deal with Angel, he shouldn't be born in Apocalypse/80's based on his appearance in X3, but fuck it, he sucked in X3 and I'm glad they rebooted him.

Olivia Munn is gonna be Psylocke? I mean sure, not like it matters. These movies just throw characters at the screen with no real thought or plan. Most of the first class cast was thrown away or killed off screen. The x movies have been terrible at making a universe. No, DOFP fixed nothing.

The Fast movies are better at continuity and let's be honest at this point storytelling then the X movies.

oh I know that, I meant is the one after Apocalypse staying in the 1980s.  with all the decade jumping technically Xavier and Magneto will be in their 40s in Apocalypse when the actors only aged 5 years.

They tried making a TV show from it.

Which was initially successful, but then quickly cratered in the ratings leading to cancellation.

But the point is, they're putting down about $200 million and hoping that people still care about the name "Terminator," despite quite a bit of evidence to the contrary.

Terminator, like most 70s/80s franchises, works best when it's not answering a bunch of fucking questions or expanding "the universe." I don't need to see the machine that sent the Terminator back, I don't need to know where the Engineers from Alien came from, I don't need to know Michael Myers was bullied at school (fuck you, Robb Zombie).

If I was working on some outside project and asked you to pass me a hammer...you'd pass me a hammer and I'd say thank you. I wouldn't say "wow this hammer is cool, but I wonder what planet it came from? Perhaps the creators of this hammer were great hammer scientists, and this is the last hammer from their planet and then -" WHO CARES

It's not just a 70s or 80s thing man. A lot of the best scifi and fantasy stories work because they're not spending half the time trying to explain shit to you. They do this by having strong believeable characters despite the circumstances and momentum moving the story forward. The best two movies of the franchise work because they're about love, and family.

Patty Jenkins (Monster, yes from 2003) is the person who will direct Wonder Women and take lots(?) of money to stifle her creative impulses.

She had to be far down the list, I'm just guessing as incredibly she's not made a proper film since Monster (yeah, with uglied up Charlize Theron) and has dabbled in TV directing since. Its great that WB is committed to getting a women to helm the film, but if its just going to be using her as cover while making a by-committee blockbuster, well that's just unfortunate as the character has a lot of potential.

Anyways, comic book shit.

yeah, I read a little about it earlier.  weird situation.  previous director (Michelle MacLaren) left Wonder Woman due to creative differences,  Patty Jenkins already left Thor 2 due to creative differences, now she's on Wonder Woman.  Warners is adamant about getting a female director and I guess that's admirable, or transparent, whichever.

eh this will probably be one of the better comic film adaptations yet. or at least it should be. affleck wants to prove himself, I feel. and man of steel had some legit balls out action scenes despite being kinda dumb in areas. which as a non comic dork is all i really care about in these things. cool scenes with cool looking dudes.

Batfleck is going to be the highlight of the movie. The rest? A mess. WB can't even stop themselves from fingering every director they've hired to make a WW movie. They let Joss Whedon slip out of their hands when we was basically sucking dicks for work back then, and lo and behold, Marvel scooped him up.

The entire problem with live action DC movies is WB. They simply have too much control and can't let anyone be TOO creative. Marvel is of course the same but to a much lesser degree (ex. whats-his-face leaving Ant-Man, but on the other hand you have shit like Guardians of the Galaxy and Loki straight up calling Black Widow a cunt in ye olde Englishe terms.) Would WB let any of that shit fly? Of course not. Snyder's such a fanboy he'll take the abuse so it's no wonder he's got his wrinkled grit-filtered cock smeared across multiple of these flicks.

What DC needs to do is make a DC Studios for their live action movies and shut WB out almost entirely except for the paycheck stuff. But that'll never happen.
