Saw Valerian tonight and it was pretty bad.

Silly yet no laughs to be had. The action tries to ape Fifth Element, but without the fun and charisma of it's stars it just feels like video game cutscenes. It opens real strong, but once it gets to the mega city, it just kind of fizzles out. The actors try to make some chemistry and do banter, but it doesn't work. The lead character feels like the sidekick.

It's premise seems like it would've made for a great television series, but not a movie.

Kong: Skulls Island or whatever was fun. I went in blind expecting yet another reboot of King Kong but the Vietnam era reboot kept things fresh. There were a lot of supporting characters getting build-ups but they would get dispatched suddenly and nobody missed them. I loved the imagery they had going on, excellent use of angles and colors, it was very impressive. The design of the monsters were pretty lame, they looked like something designed in Spore. I LOVED the giant buffaloes even if it seemed that their scale would change sometimes. Anyhow, the movie was just the right length of time

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable - Chapter 1

So I got dragged to this by two friends, we have the Fantasia Festival going on right now in Montreal, and it's all horror/scifi/action flicks from around the world for 3 weeks. My friends had an extra ticket and asked me if I wanted to join them, so I figured WHY NOT. The theater was a huge hall with like 500+ people who were super weebs and super hyped about the movie. I saw some girl in a pink kimono outfit with an umbrella in the lineup.

It was a  Takashi Miike flick, so it's either brilliant or TOTAL GARBAGE.

It was total garbage. There was some funny as fuck stuff in the movie such as how everybody keeps making fun of Jojo's hairdo, and the nerd guy's relationship with his friend at school, it's the kind of humor you find in Miike's flick,  but the rest of the movie was terrible. Just when you think the movie is over (FINALLY), there's a sudden 20 minutes curve that leads nowhere at all and then there's the real ending. The whole thing with the "Stands" was kinda interesting but their powers were inconsistent.  The final guy's secret power is super fucking random and a huge letdown (
spoiler (click to show/hide)
he can summon armies of small toy soldiers that fire real bullets and bombs? What the fuck...
[close]
).

The acting was very Japanese, the cgi effects were low budget but You just accept it, it's a Japanese production. People were super hyped but politely applauded at the end, so I assume the hardcore fans didn't like it much.

I'll spoil the weird curve at the end for those who wants to read it:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
So that Jojo dude defeats the two brothers, and one of them goes up a set of stairs. Jojo and the nerd goes upstairs and get attacked by the japanese version of the Swamp Thing (?!). Jojo punches him in the jaw and the creature goes down and starts crying. One of the brother appears and reveals that the creature is their FATHER. But he wasn't human anymore because he didn't care about them, he only cared about work. so with time, he turned in a low budget of the Swamp Thing. The bros tried to kill him many times but he keeps regenerating, so they keep him tied up in the cellar and were trying to find another Stand user that was powerful enough to zap him out of existence. So they go on and on about this for what felt like 30 minutes, with tons of pseudo animu japanese philosophy sprinkled in. The mutant father keeps fucking around a box while they do this, so jojo uses his stand's power to regenerate the box, only to discover that the creature was trying to stitch back up a family picture of him, his wife and the two bros when they were kids. Cue cheesy sappy music and bla bla bla, and the main bro kills himself over it. The end. The next scene is Jojo and his time travelling Uncle from the future talking together on a beach
[close]

You guys have no idea how it was to experience that 30 minutes curve. I just wanted to die. I was also pissed because they showed the trailer for another Miike movie that was going to be shown later this week, and I was  :-\ >:( the entire time because it looked far more interesting than the tripe I was watching.

The other movie is called "Blades of the Immortal"

Theres nothing as inconsistent as japanese cinema imo, its not just miike its 95% of their filmmakers. Japanese movies are either really good or just completely trash. There's no inbetween. I accept that this might be a cultural thing and I'm just not there but that's been my experience ever seince diving deep into asian cinema in high school.

One of the more consistent modern Japanese directors I've watched is Kiyoshi Kurosawa. Not all of his movies are all-time classics, sure, but most of his movies are at least interesting in one way or another and nobody delights in trouncing on genre tropes more than he does.

I am speculating a bit but out of the modest share of Japanese cinema it just seem like it went dogshit abruptly in the late seventies - early eighties. It's really shocking in some of the very late chambaras and Chiba vehicles where the technical quality (lighting, music, etc...) fall off a cliff even when helmed by a director like Fukusaku, same for Godzillas (Or A.Kurosawa needing foreign funds to make movies). From that point on the films started to look more and more like made for video and TV. Seems the money just vanished and the studio industry collapsed, I guess because of depressed audiences and the ubiquity of television ? I suspect it's not entirely random that Kitano, one of the few worthy and internationally respected directors to have started his career after that point, was a huge TV star beforehand. The cultural part of it may be (I'll let those familiar with the country weight on that) the weight of television and a rabid hunger for fresh, disposable pop culture and pretty faces ?

Just saw this and yeah, you might have a point there, I never got deep into JTV but I definitely noticed the tv quality elements to some of their films.

Ben Wheatley's Free Fire was a lot of fun. It's also the shining example of why I wouldn't mind if some directors took a stance again the age old movie runtime and were willing to make a theatrical film 60 mins if it fits. The movie runs out of steam before the end and is a little long in the tooth. Ending was very Wheatley. But for the first hour it's really enjoyable if you want to see a bunch of goofy people in a comical retro shootout for an hour.

Saw Valerian over the weekend, I liked the world they built and the lore but thought the characters, dialogue and plot was on the weak side. With a better writer the sequels could be great. I liked it overall but it has it's flaws.

The Void was almost obnoxiously average and bland. Would not recommend. Seems like a movie that exists because of Cthulhu becoming a meme more so than a good cosmic horror story.
The Void which was bad. Completely failed to live up to it's excellent practical effects. It's pretty boring and does nothing with it's premise until maybe the last 30 minutes which were still pretty dull.
Saw the gaf thread on The Void so checked it out since I'm always up for some Lovecraftian horror films.

it was...ok.  Not bad, not great.  Some good scenes and I thought the end segment was fairly strong, nice visuals, but it feels like there's barely a thread of substance in the film and the majority of the film just feels like bits of Hellraiser, Dead Space, The Thing, Silent Hill.  There's scenes that just don't work in the movie like the main guy and his wife arguing for like 3 minutes about a pregnancy, but then there's scenes that really do work.

I think if this was more refined, a longer run time with more substance, this would be like Darabount's The Mist with a stronger dosage of Lovecraft.  Still, it sorta works and you can appreciate the good bits in there.  As a Lovecraft fan, I can't say it wasn't worth the watch.  Just was...ok.  Last 20 minutes are straight up a new Hellraiser movie, which is kinda cool even if it's not as good as Hellraiser and the Cenobites.

I remembered a slightly more positive review from somewhere, obviously not this board. I enjoyed it, but you guys are right: it's not great, it's kinda half-baked. There are some good, strong, low budget visuals happening, impressive sound design and a number of good moments. It never comes together into a coherent whole; this could certainly be a good "what the fuck happened" movie, but some things are over-clarified while others are just left unattended.

Whomever wrote this was enamored of either Assault on Precinct 13 or Prince of Darkness (very similar, structurally) and, to a lesser degree, Hellraiser. It wears most of its influences on its sleeve.

the story they had from orci and kurtzman was to bring back Kirk's dad (aka Thor), so i hope they've shredded it but the people they hired to write the new one are Abrams-orbit people best known for working on a film adaption of Deadliest Warrior

that said, they had already slotted it for 2019 (so Hemsworth would be available)...Beyond bombed, and it was restarted from near scratch by Pegg, Jung and Lin 6 months before they started filming it which was a year before release...so fingers crossed

Watched Life (2017) recently and it felt like one long three stooges skit at times. Just a series of dumb and dumber decisions to move the plot forward. That being said, I actually ended up enjoying the movie due to the pacing and sci-fi horror aspects. Calvin (the alien) was a creepy little fuck. The ending was well done and turned out to be pretty memorable.

But to be honest I'm a sucker for anything that takes place on a spaceship so I might be overselling it  :larry

We watched Assault on Precinct 13 a couple years ago on Plug.DJ, it's a pretty solid movie [if a bit rough around the edges] and plays with a lot of the themes and ideas that Carpenter used throughout his career.

Greatly enjoyed watching this mixed up neo-noir about Japanese people in San Francisco. Hit a bunch of the right notes, and I was genuinely wondering how it would end. It emphasized how people can have information about different parts of the same incident, and be unable to put pieces together due to shortcomings in communication. It also introduced me to the concept of l'homme fatale.

Saw this based on your rec and ya, it gud.

I'm really hoping The Dark Tower is legendarily terrible. I'm not even sure why. I like Stephen King. Then again I couldn't get into these books and people talk about them all the goddambed time. Please give me so-bad-it's-good-and-pisses-off-fans-and-gets-the-show-cancelled.

I'm like halfway through book 3 and outside about half of book 2 which was great, I've been skimming a lot and I almost never skim when I read books. And this is supposed to be the "good half" of the franchise so idk. Duckroll tells me the only book worth caring about is book 4 Wizard and the Glass and that's the TV show idea one so who knows.

That being said Idris Elba is like the most perfect actor in the universe for the main guy, so I kinda wanna see the movie no matter how bad just to see him bring Roland to life.

yeah wizard and glass is the best of the series and pretty much immediately after that the whole thing nose dives. Wolves of Calla is alright, but song of s is super bad and the final book is even worse

if you're gonna adapt any of these books the original (gunslinger) and (w&g) are your best bets.

At this rate I'm planning on getting through Wizard & The Glass and then reading Wikipedia summaries. I feel like the pacing is pretty slow in the second half of book 2 and first half of book 3. It's an interesting story but just feels like the episodic format means not much happens per book rather than each book being a self-contained exciting novel. All the Jake stuff is kinda zzz where I'm at.

THR review says it's kind bland and toothless which seems about right.

Colossal - Despite the 80% RT and it being by Nacho Vigalondo of the great Timecrimes, I had one friend really dislike it and so was a little hesitant going in. Wow, yeah, uh, this is one of the least enjoyable films I've ever seen. It's not a "bad" film, but I can't think of anytime during the almost 2 hour runtime I was enjoying the movie. There's no energy, the characters are unlikeable, the direction is really weak and doesn't seem like he knows what he's going for. Yeah, didn't like this one at all  :'(

Wizard and Glass has Blaine the Mono, and thus is redeemed from mediocrity and catapulted into Stephen King good stuff.

I liked this a ton! I had my complaints, but I found it really unpredictable, which goes a long way for me. Biggest complaint is that Anne Hathaway's hair is disgusting. No lady should ever willingly have hair that emulates Zooey Deschanel's. Worst hair look ever. If we're really going to entertain the notion of big/lotsa hair looks coming back, we need to look to the 80s, not to that animal monster.

OT: Samurai Cop - a masterpiece of bad filmmaking, this allowed me a new level of insight and appreciation of continuity editing, color balancing, and even set dressers and location scouting. This movie was never going to be good, but it brings an unprecedented level of bad to the table. Amazon Prime Streaming USA.
