So I was absent for like 8 months, so I probably missed all the regular film crew raving about Mandy a few months back, right? I mean, how can you not. This high fantasy film in contemporary drag was one of my favorite theater experiances of the year. As a drugged out, sensory trip its top-rate, as a very weirded out twist on way old revenge film tropes it still delivers the goods. But its not just a midnight movie exercise in deliberate strangeness (altbough its an excellent example of that), it also goes about its goals of establishing its characters and their relationships with complete and disarming sincerity. This makes it without a doubt the saddest film I've ever seen that also features a chainsaw duel. With a thundering score by the late Johan Johansson (really gonna miss that guy) and a fiercely committed Nicolas Cage performance (from anybody else this would have been better lauded, from him this sort of frothing yet measured excessiveness is expected), and probably every fog machine available to rent in all of Northern Europe, its a film that feels very fresh while retaining so many familiar elements.
Anyways, I liked it very much. But I'm real sure that similar sentiments have already been expressed here just previously.
