they could have easily recast or CG Ed Furlong.

Actually, an out of shape, down trodden by years of hard living loser John Connor a la Thor in Avengers Endgame would've brought great comedic value. Instead of "asta la vista baby" his catchphrase could me "life comes at you fast, maaaan."

I don't care what people say, more terminator is generally good.  Bad movies don't retroactivily spoil good ones.

This one did, for me anwyays. It'll be difficult to watch T2's ending without the opening scene of this Cameron-blessed shit infecting the experience on some level.

At least Newt died offscreen.

Birdman : I was into it but I can hear some of the theorical criticisms about the whole "continuous camera shot" device : a coworker argued with me about this and the lack of "triggers" to justify some of the camera shifting, leading to the impression it's an omniscient camera devoid of a coherent angle. It honestly didn.t bother me though there's always something a bit gratuitous to this sort of performance.

I'll probably try to catch the Revenant too, as it's in Netflix as well.

Don’t bother, The Revenant was as shit and up its own ass as everything else Inarritu does.  Has some nice visuals and the supporting cast is alright, but that’s really it.  Leo’s done much, much better films.

That's a bit whatever as a simple member of the audience judging the end product but apparently the producers of the Revenant must have had some fits or deep pockets because Inarritu and his DOP insisted on shooting most of it only at the golden hours of dusk and dawn.

I haven't seen a lot of him, Amores Perros kind of bored me (beyond the obvious talent) and 21 Grams was good. I could see the up his ass angle for an opinion though, it's a fine line between high demand artistic and technical standards and sounding like a prima donna.

Are you that bothered by stories that aren't very kind to American settlers?

I mean, if that were the case I’d have liked the back half of the movie more and the front half less.

I’ll admit I went into The Revenant already predisposed to dislike it on account of my distaste for Inarritu up to that point, but in the end divorced from that I still feel that it was a film mostly empty of compelling character drama.  It was only filled by beautifully shot nothing, the standard Domnhall Gleason decent performance, Tom Hardy playing with accents, and Leo and Alejandro doing the Meryl Streep-esque, “do you see us acting and directing this movie?  See how much we act and direct this scene?  Aren’t we such an actor and director?”  Leo may be as talented as Streep, but it wasn’t showing here IMO.  Once Upon a Time In Hollywood and This Boy’s Life are much better indicators of how good his acting can be.

Inarritu is of course a talentless hack pretending he’s Alfonso Cuaron or Nicolas Winding-Refn, helped propped up by phenomenal cinematographers.

Not saying he is, only saying that if he were The Revenant is certainly not the role I’d use to argue it.  Yet, nobody would shut up about he good he was in the movie, how brave he was in his acting the role.

On another note: Harriet was decent and I enjoyed it.  Janelle Monae was particularly fine as hell, and I got a kick out of Clarke Peters (Lester from The Wire) playing another character that whittles little things.  I haven’t seen much else of the girl that plays Harriet Tubman, but based on this I think she’s going to have plenty more of the meaty roles in the future, she’s got good presence.

The Revenant is great;  most of the film is pretty straightforward.. not sure how it's "up it's own ass."  Are you that bothered by stories that aren't very kind to American settlers?

Yeah, it got a little overrated but it's a gorgeous looking good film with great acting. No complaints.

I didn't like Birdman though. I thought it would be really up my alley from the plot concept but while it was an ok film I did not get the hype at all. I enjoyed Revenant much more.

James Dean will return to the big screen and Twitter isn't happy: 'a disgusting publicity stunt'

Right... but, why? There is literally no acting done by James anyways? Which is the purpose of an actor acting.  :whatsthedeal

I don't understand why they didn't just make a CG movie with an original main CG character who they model after James Dean. I mean CG models in stuff are based off real people all the time but they don't go around announcing that.

I mean I understand it as a publicity stunt, but yeah just gonna piss people off when otherwise the same movie no one would've cared.

RLM had a great idea for a terminator film.

A movie set after Terminator 2 as a John Connor coming of age story with his paranoid mother who hooked up with the second Arnold send back in time.

Kingsman was expertly done, but should've remained a stand-alone movie. It's also one of those movies that gets worse the more times you watch it. You then realize how much of it's charm was riding on the element of surprise. Which is why the sequels are/were a horrible idea. The person who greenlit them should be flogged.

I have a confession: I have only watched Kingsman 2 bc it was on tv and I liked it, so I am in for a treat when I watch the first one! But honestly, I can't see how people could have these sentiments about this franchise, but like John Wick (not saying you do). This to me has a very similar feel to John Wick, but not grimdark and with a bit more humor and British sass.

Kingsman is annoying trash. Nothing lazier than Bond parodies/satires/rip offs. Plus Eggsy is the worst fucking character.

Even if they're better than the actual Bond films these days?

Ex Machina

I was slightly disappointed, but the more I think about it the more I like it. The disappointment was because I was so interested in the premise the movie shows you, and that turned out to be the weakest and least explored part of the movie. But what it does turn out to be is good too. Probably the strongest part is Oscar Isaac's character. You can imagine how his ability to create AI could have been a vicious cycle that caused him to end up this way, or maybe he was just always like that. Some really beautiful scenes too.

Saw The Irishman, it was pretty good and surprisingly funny at times; long as shit though.  The aging/de-aging effects are ridiculously impressive, even despite not necessarily matching exactly how the actors looked when they were actually younger.

I look forward to watching it again when it goes on Netflix.

Adults in the Room aka Valve Propaganda the movie  :rethread based on Yánis Varoufákis's book and directed by Costa-Gavras.

It's a bit of a slow burn (by the end it gets some flourishes that elevates this beyond a well intentioned docudrama) but it's really as much about the desperate negociations of the Greek debt than about how power become a self-perpetuating end in itself and the voters being betrayed by their leaders. In that sense it's not exactly a puff piece for the Tsipras cabinet. It's not the best Costa-Gavras (Photography is nothing special though there might be some intent here by mimicking 24 hours info channels) but that's still worth your time.

Oooo boy. Still processing, but Dr. Sleep pressed all the wrong buttons. Pretty sure it’s objectively worse than the Shining TV miniseries.  At best, nobody will remember this in two months. Critics really missed the mark on this one, similar to Death Stranding. Why are critics wrong so often lately? Aren’t most critics liberal? Makes you wonder—if you can’t trust their reviews, can you really consider their political positions valid? Huh? HUH

Still, it’s not all bad. Here are my bullet points:

* First half hour was a little sloppy, but it seemed promising. It had potential; I was a little hyped, actually.
* The doubles they used for Danny and Shelley Duvall were abysmal. They looked terrible (a double is no longer good enough in the year of de-aging, but even by the standards of using doubles, these were really poor matches). More importantly, they acted -nothing- like Danny and Shelley in The Shining. These are two very famous performances, and neither are that complex. Just bad, bad, bad. If they couldn’t have done these scenes right, they shouldn’t have done them at all...
* ...but then there wouldn’t be much connecting this to the Shining. This movie is really its own thing. If you walk in thinking this isn’t a sequel to the Shining, you may like it. But it will remind you it’s a sequel to the Shining frequently, even though the plot is disconnected.
* The new little girl is a bad actor and has no personality. She delivers all of her lines like they’re the moral of an after-school special. She is not charming or likable or dislikable or anything. She’s just there—and since she’s a lead that’s a big problem. Can’t feel or care about a block of wood.
* Rose and Crow were pretty cool. I could’ve used more of them and the baddies in general. Their introduction was handled really shittily, but they end up being the fun part of the movie.
* This fucker feels long. It’s very slow paced. The plot is very simple, but it wasn’t planned out in advance and it meanders and meanders. It’s a simple plot but it would take me three fucking paragraphs to describe it because either King or the script writer thought they were brilliant and dumped all over the fucking place.
* Terrible, generic movie soundtrack, ca 2019. Not good for a genre flick. Not at all acceptable for a sequel to a fuckin’ Kubrick flick. They use a few Wendy Carlos music cues from the original and a -horrendous- orchestrated version of her Shining theme. No exaggeration: they put no effort in here.
* I did enjoy the ending, but let’s not pretend fanservice is difficult to pull off. No ideas were required to put this ending together.

The movie (probably wisely) doesn’t ape Kubrick’s visual stylings at all, outside of a recreation of the Big Wheel steadicam shot and a few other shots. The stuff in the Overlook is most often in Flanagan’s own style.

Just a failure from nearly every angle. Director’s first big misfire, too. This is King in fantasy mode, where he typically produces lesser works (The Stand, Dark Tower), so it’s not really a shock, although reviews swerved me by making me think this might be good. It kinda feels like King stapled an okay beginning to a Shining sequel onto a bunch of random ideas that had been sitting in his desk for decades. It bad.

An addendum : The film is, as I said, somewhat confrontional to Tsipras, despite the obvious sympathies of the director. Varoufakis is however being offered a very flattering portrait. It's expected because it's based on his book and he was consulted by the director... But AFAIK not everyone, including on the left, is so enamored or uncritical of his account. It's not really a detriment to the film, it's as good as an anchor as any when the larger point is dramatically underlining the childish, callous bureaucracy of Euro institutions and their ideological pettiness. But I could imagine it's a little grating if you have some beef with him.

I liked the Flanagan flick he made for Netflix starring Gugino but thought the last reel which swerved into very literal fantasy was distinctly weaker than the rest (though I wouldn't be surprised if it was faithful to King's material) and your extended opinion pretty much confirm all the bias I had about this watching the trailer.

I have to admit I’ve always held bias against the novel because King wrote it as a result of a fan poll. The novel is literally fan service.

It bad.

I think the most frustrating thing about it is the flashes of brilliance for me. I adore the surreal aspects but it just seemed weighed down throughout. I also really dislike the almost clinically diffused lighting style this director seems to favor.

Big missed opportunity to not have Ewan give Billy a brojob after getting all emotional at their AA meeting.

Biggest plot hole was no blow job bear. You’re trying to tell me that wasn’t the most haunting, traumatizing shit he saw? He NEVER encountered and boxed blow job bear? Bull-fucking-shit.

I agree. I liked the angle with Danny in therapy and him helping people die, but that gets dropped quickly. I thought that could’ve been intriguing.

Yeah, that part seems like an afterthought in the movie. They had to show him at the hospice for a few minutes so the title would make sense, then they dropped it.

Dolemite is my name : Gonna agree with RLM here, it's entirely predictable (apparently the writers made Edwood and all the other movies in that mold) but it's still a pleasant comedy : it's hard to go wrong with such a colourful and cult story and a great casting giving it all its heart.

At least Sonic doesn't look like some freakish gnome anymore, but the movie itself still looks garbage.

It's really getting hard to tell if these early "bad CGI" trailers are a studio gimmick or are just the logical chain events when making a film.

They get all the internet buzz for the bad trailer, then the dummies think the movie is worth watching because it's improved in later versions. I shouldn't shit on Sonic fans .. they've been beaten down for so long they deserve something decent for once.

He looks better but literally every line is him being annoying then going "Haha isn't it funny how annoying I am!"

I guess that's true to form tho.

Why does anyone give a fucking fuck?
Sonic is the biggest Sex Symbol of the 2000s, nailing his looks (and bed-eyes) is PARAMOUNT.

Why are they even making the movie to begin with? I just feel like it is going to be a flop. No one gives a shit about Sonic anymore it is not the 90s.

Sonic sucks, I have low expectations, my kids will enjoy it when it comes out on Netflix/whatever, i'll watch while playing around on my phone.
