I just started The Magicians and three eps in it’s pretty good.

I started it on Netflix in the USA, and downloaded the first season to my iPad. It doesn't run on Netflix Japan, so I actually liked it enough to outright buy season 2.

Locke and Key was pretty okay, for the tension of watching the kids make stupid decisions constantly

Oh man I was really worried BoJack Horseman was going for the easy way out, I'm glad they didn't. Doesn't tie up loose ends but that's OK, life doesn't wrap up nicely either.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Didn't care for that second to last episode though.

Shockingly, Bojack Horseman ends on a downer ending for almost everyone concerned, if anyone was sticking it through to see if it had anything uplifting to say or was going to make any kind of redemptive arc.

I don't really agree, I'd say most of the major characters end in a better place. Well, of course, not so much for that one but it could have been worse.
Apparently Netflix forced the show's end in finishing now (?) and arguably the rush can be felt in not everyone getting some spotlight to cap things off. The inconclusiveness of some threads felt appropriate (and at least party intentional) and honestly I think Bojack yo-yoing into routine self-destruction was really wearing thin already from a dramatic standpoint. In a way, the supporting cast did outgrow him even from a viewer's standpoint, I would love we'd follow them more. Horseman, not so much.

I really didn't like the whole episode 15 thing, time would have been better served used for elsewhere. Apart from that, it was funny, thoughtful and quality throughout IMO.

I dunno, Bojack started the show worried he was so toxic that he would inevitably drive everyone away from him, and he ends the show... having driven everyone away from him.
Diane started being unable to find happiness because she thinks shes too good for the work she does and is good at, and ends... yeah.
Todd is going to continue forrest gumping through life.
Princess caroline is going to continue being unable to take a healthy break from her work, and I don't think whatsisface her PA is going to stick around watching her do that.
Even Mr Peanut Butter ends up alone, with the only person as vapid as he is fucking off to be on tour with some boyband singer

:idont

Its a good show, but showing how close to a realisation of being happy the characters get, then taking it away from them and showing ultimately theyre unwilling to change... quite a downer.
The only character who genuinely seems to get a happy ending and some kind of breakthrough is that PTSD actress that bojack strangled, who - entirely in background shots - seems to have overcome it and built a successful career

I saw most of those under a favourable light. I guess that in a sense none of the deep character traits were rooted off, but everyone was active, in a relationship, achieved a balance at which they were happier or made some progress (Todd) or more aware of the issues (Mr.Peanutbutter even if he's back at square one).

I agree there's a bit of "all that for that" to it, that's maybe why they have that bait and switch to up the emotional stakes.

So Kingdom is coming back, pretty excited, it's the first Korean tv show i was able to enjoy (despite them having amazing cinema).
I'm gonna need a recap of season 1 though, because it was forever ago, and forgot most of it.

I’ve found this season really fucking funny, even though it feels rehashier than usual and it feels like there are more visible rough edges. I think I’m enjoying it more than last season at this point.

It seems like they're allowing the improv to flow a little more this season. Plus it seems to have recaptured an inherent goofiness it had been missing

Jessica is horrible. Mark is a simp. He needs to run away. There are so many red flags.
Lauren is clearly not as into Cameron as he's into her, and she's not even hiding it. If she is trying to hide, she has a terrible poker face.
Amber is going to ruin Barnett.
Giannina and the crying ginger will never make it.

I like how the show is called Love Is Blind, yet somehow all the men have 16" arms.

Altered Carbon season 2 sucks :mjcry

All that kitschy Cowboy Bebop If It Was Made By A White Person  charm is gone. It's like a season of The 100 now :beli
I didn't have much hope after the steep nose dive the show took in quality in the back half of season 1. We'll always have those superb first few episodes though.

And the dude they casted is somehow more wooden then the former lead. Even when he's emoting anger it's like there's a disconnect there

Watched the first episode of I'm not ok with this since I liked End of the Fucking World a lot and this is the same director's 2nd project. Being that it's also a quirky show about 2 teens that's eight 20 min episodes and also based off a graphic novel (by the same author Charles Formann) and also set to music cues and narration in the same style, this is sorta the american remake spiritual successor to End of the Fucking World in style at least. From ep1 it seems like that and it also seems less compelling because the leads here just don't have the charisma that the UK couple had. And well the dialogue just isn't as sharp and well written, but different graphic novel and all as the core. The ratings for the graphic novel on goodreads seem a lot lower than end of the f***king world.

But being that it's 8 twenty min eps, it's very bingable like end of the fucking world, so will watch it through in a sitting or two and report back.

Yeah, just finished it. Thought there were 8 eps, so when the next ep didn’t play I was like wtf. That was a weak place to end it. Story felt really unfinished in all the arcs. Hopefully they do a S2 I guess. Or I can just check out the comic.

But the story/character development arc would be very unsatisfying here in that direction.

I can see why this comic has 3/5 stars on Goodread and End of the Fucking World has like 5/5 stars. End of the Fucking World was a much better story and ending.

Just finished up the final season of Power.

Man, that kind of ended on a flat note.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Imo they made a huge mistake in this “who killed ghost” shit. There was so much repetition of all the scenes from different angles, and it was only like half of it was actually interesting.

[close]

The worst part was they did that same scene from multiple peoples perspectives thing, but like they did it in a way where the scene wasn’t consistent, there is one scene in particular that they do twice, and the whole fucking scene is different from the second perspective. The dialogue changed, where people are standing changed, it was really obvious if you are watching it in streaming.

Designated Survivor s2 moves from being overly serious all the time to having some humor in it (good!) but also going a bit schmaltzy and less… realistic? Kirkman grows a spine and then becomes spiny and then tries to rebalance himself.

There's a "dirty bomb" scenario in s2 that only goes an episode or two; I thought it would drag on for a while, since it was the entire plot of 24 s1. Ideally, the series should end with Kirkman meeting a de-aged Kiefer Sutherland as the head of CTU.

Designated Survivor is fucking glorious trash, that can't decide if it wants to be the West Wing or 24, so veers wildly between the two and does not give a fuck at what a tonal mess it results in.

I really like Devs after the initial two episodes. It definitely feels like an Alex Garland project. Interested to see how this goes. It’s already pretty daring. Slow burn, though, but I did say it feels like a Garland project.

Yeah I'm hoping it holds up. Looks like it's gonna get weirder and there are more episodes than I thought there would be (i think theres gonna be 8?).

:rejoice

The first season is pretty clear about its tonal goals: it's an everyman pushed into the role of POTUS during a time of remarkable turmoil. Its main problem was a complete lack of levity or any kind of humor.

Season 2 brings in some laughs and charm, and at the same time wants to pursue this incredibly bleak conspiracy stuff, as well as Maggie-Q-as-Jack-Bauer and her British Spy Boyfriend and CHUCK the computer wizard (not /that/ CHUCK the computer wizard/spy). It becomes a mess.

Also, the conspiracy stuff resolves so poorly, with Anthony Michael Hall's thread being left in a similar state to other dead-not-dead situations, but it turns out he's unceremoniously dead.

9 episodes left to finish the series. I'm looking forward seeing how they resolve it almost as much as I'm happy to move on.

finished Fukunaga's Maniac. It's weird, when I started it a year or two ago when it came out I liked the first ep of the weird blade runner kinda of world but then I thought it was pretty slow and then the dream eps felt episodic and wasn't engaged & fell asleep a few times & I shelved it, but watching the 2nd half in the last week, I thought it came together really well. I think if I re-watched it I'd love like the whole thing, it's just that a lot of the elements are weird and it's hard to get a feel of what's going on with the subplots and themes until pretty far in. Everyone was good acting, but I thought Jonah Hill was top notch and his best acting performance yet. Liked it a lot.

There's a season 3 which gets even more glorious, as it tries to get super woke and includes - I shit you not - a staff member telling not-jack-bauer-or-president-bartletts transgender sister to check her privilege after being deadnamed

Yes, I'm in s3 now, enjoying it for the most part. The melodrama has definitely been beefed up. I miss Lyor, Kendra, and Mike Ritter. I do not like Isobel, Aaron Shore's mouthy and egocentric girlfriend. I am enjoying the inclusion of documentary-shot, real-person footage they're using for various hotbutton issues.

Finished Locke and Key.

My partner was really into it, but I was a bit meh on the whole thing. Had some good moments, but overall, I spent most of it looking at my phone.
