Enjoying Riverdale right now. I love that it's close to Twin Peaks without aping it (except that one shot of the Black Hood climbing over the couch, an obvious homage). The actors all do a bang-up job; not quite as much scenery-chewing as Peaks. Fun to see how many '80s teen stars have regular roles in it. I gotta say though, Molly Ringwald did not age like wine.

Just wanted to reiterate how bad (good) 7Seeds is.
For real, just watch this instead Castelvania or whatever.

Every episode is a masterpiece, every scene is a showcase of incredibly, absurdly shit writing and horrid drawings.  :delicious

So I was watching Castle Rock S2 on my free Hulu w/ads that came with Spotify.

First ep or two was like one 30-60 second ad every 15 mins. Which is about what I remember cable tv being like when I was a kid. This was fine and I was like "hey, ads aren't that bad, I'm happy saving $13/month and just living with this"

but then by ep3/4, it changed to 60-90 seconds of ads every 5 mins. Which is fucking insanity and the ads are 20% of the viewing run time. I couldn't take it and couldn't finish episodes, so I ended up paying the damn $13/month for Hulu ad-free.

But yeah I just wanted to say how EVIL that is that they make it seem like ads are ok until you get a few eps in and are invested into a show and then it's like fuck you, got ads.

Finished Castle Rock S2. That was a good season of HQ modern TV. The director/cinematography is great and gets really good performances out of the cast which is filled with excellent people. Pretty enjoyable story. Only downside is the tie-ins with Misery felt really forced and unnecessary. The main character being Annie Wilkes didn't really add anything and the same season could've been done with her as just a nobody original main character. The character relationships and drama, like S1, is good.

The whole thing being weird as King fan fiction with basically no involvement from King is still weird since these are established characters/settings being used but this doesn't really fit with any canon.

But I guess if you really want to make it work, the King universe has some easy outs with

Sure, but I mean most of King's stuff takes place in alternate worlds of Earth. Like The Stand is its own universe. So that works for Castle Rock being in its own alternate world of earth since things are similar but different as well.

It's one nice thing about the King universe is stuff like that basically lets you connect anything.

I thought it was visually splendid, but everything else was boring af.
No plot, (basically) no character arcs, in fact, almost no characters at all, boringly shot and edited action, Pedro Pascal made for a terribly limp dicked Mandalorian, too.
I think people were high on it because coming from the Nu-Trilogy was bound to prep them up for the worse.

All i got out of it, were Herzog and Baby Yoda.

I'm halfway through season 2 of Six Feet Under and I don't think I can continue, all the characters are pretty wonderful except for Brenda and Billy. They are like final season of Girls level of insufferable and totally ruin the show, especially if you've ever known anyone with BPD who wouldn't get treatment.

I know its gotten a mixed reaction in some circles but so far I've quite liked this season of Westworld. It feels more like BladeRunner the TV show rather than the Westworld of season 1 and 2 and while that is a pretty different thing, I think this season has been on the right side of mostly focusing on emotions rather than plot shenanigans and mystery puzzle boxes of past seasons. This season has been completely understandable without having to dip into endless speculative theory which is a good thing in my book.

I liked season 2 but it was definitely a lot of theory. This season has been a bit more balanced though I think there was too much Charlotte. Serac, Maeve and Aaron Paul's stories though, knocking it out the park.

When I say it's not film level, it's a bit harsh, lots of budget movies would like to look like this. Wardrobe especially is really decent. Make up can't be cheap. I think the lighting and grading is a bit gaudy and despite the extras and locations the framing is a tad flat.

It's a fresh twist on the zombie formula, with clever use of the tropes. Medium spicy commentary on class warfare too.

Kingdom was great, it's also a great wu xia pian fix. Really strong writing and some interesting symbolism tying the undead and political intrigue. Not sure about that sequel hook at the end, looks corny, but that's a bit of a contractual obligation.

I was commenting on season 2 a couple of pages back.

Kingdom is great, a lot of fun.
It's occasionally a bit too cheesy (and dumb, like many zombies stories tend to be) and rushes over the resolution of many plot elements, but it's probably the only Korean TV show i can stomach, because it's not 25, 90 minutes episodes, like all the others i've tried to watch.
That is what helps keeping the production values (and the pace) up, in my opinion.

As a rule of thumb, any TV show that goes above 10 to 13 episodes, tends to be shit, unless it's a sitcom.
If you can keep it at 6, even better.

I agree the show rushes and brushes a lot of things over for convenience (and keeping the core drama strong and centered) at the end.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I loved the insane mind games the Prince and Cho are pulling on each other in the military encampment... I think things get a little artificial when the action has to move back to the capital. As you commented, a little weak to leave the Southern city and major infection be resolved off screen while having to create a new one on thin and flimsy grounds (Queen be mad yo) because... Well... That's the show. Cho gets played like an amateur by his daughter, I didn't buy that.
[close]

I think the camera and visual work gets a little more flashy in the second season (that flashback opening of a battle is pretty good). I don't know if gaudy is the right term for the grading, there's always something that grates me with those modern color palettes. Super minor but I guess I'll always be partial to blue / red Tsui Hark filters for Asian swords & costumes.

One thing I'll say that surprised me favourably is new characters getting constantly thrown in the political intrigue without being an hindrance for overall clarity. Not sure I could pick all of them in a lineup without their costume (LOTS of dudes with the same goatee) but the subtitles (original voice acting ?) address them a lot by their functions so you always know what's what.

Good ending for Homeland. I'm kinda surprised they managed to salvage this so well.
The last season was great, focused a lot on character interactions as opposed to doomsday devices and abstractions.

If you told me Game of Thrones would have a shit ending and Homeland would nail it a year ago I wouldn't have believed it but here we are.

Started watching Ozarks during the quarantine. I'm a couple episodes into S2 so far. It's good in some ways, but largely feels like a retread of Breaking Bad mixed with various tropes from other shows. The entire family dynamic, from the bratty daughter to the special fellow son...the marriage issues...it's all very familiar to anyone who watched good TV shows from the 00s to early 10s.

The acting is where it really fails to match Breaking Bad or better shows. I really like Jason Bateman in general, especially from Arrested Development, but his range is pretty limited to the "calm, collected sociopath" thing. One of the great things about Breaking Bad was seeing the emotional versatility of Cranston's performance. From fear to biblical anger to indifference, it was all believable. Whereas Bateman watches people get killed in wild ways and is just like "wow bro, don't do that to me." I just can't buy the calmness. Even Michael Corleone lost his cool and flipped out.

Overall I'm enjoying it for the plot ( :doge ) and will keep watching.

This is mostly true in my opinion as well, however i think the dynamic between husband/wife is a bit peculiar, as they're both in on the hustle, and so it forfeits the usual mechanism of the husband having the lie and bend backwards to hide the truth, and the wife being the moral beacon for the audience.
Anyway, i stopped about 3 episodes in Season 3, 'cause i was getting bored, but i'll continue, at some point.

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/christopher-meloni-reprise-law-order-svu-character-nbc-spinoff-1287717

Quote
Christopher Meloni is returning to the Dick Wolf fold.

The former Law & Order: SVU star is set to reprise his role as Elliot Stabler in a new drama from procedural king Dick Wolf. The as-yet untitled SVU offshoot has been picked up straight to series at NBC with a 13-episode order.

Representatives for NBC, producers Universal Television and Wolf Entertainment declined comment.

The series is the first to stem from Wolf's recent massive five-year, nine-figure overall deal that included multiple series orders for various platforms within the NBCUniversal fold. The project revolves around an NYPD organized crime unit led by Stabler. The new series will also be set in New York, paving the way for crossovers with SVU and a reunion with his former co-star Mariska Hargitay and her iconic detective Olivia Benson.

Wolf will executive produce alongside Arthur W. Forney and Peter Jankowski. Former Chicago PD showrunner Matt Olmstead will likely serve as head writer and showrunner.

The series brings Meloni back to the Wolf and L&O fold after he departed SVU following season 12. Since then, he has starred in multiple series including Syfy's Happy and the Fox comedy Surviving Jack, among others.
