Pretty sure I'm preferring Rings of Power over House of the Dragon, although both are pretty good.

It's nice to go into both of these shows with only a little knowledge of the source material for a change.

Don't Hug Me I'm Scared the TV Series just dropped :rejoice

I've only watched the first few episodes as its the kind of show its easy to burn out on binging it back to back, and its very clear there are pros and cons from moving to a 5 min internet short to a half hour TV show.

The obvious Pro is you can spend some more time giving the actual characters more personality and fleshing them out a little bit, and the obvious Con is the Lesson Of The Week drags a little when its a full half hour.

Its still DHMIS though!

Finally watching Breaking Bad. Midway through s3 now.

Each character goes through times where we can empathize and other times where we hate them.

Except Hank’s wife Marie. She’s consistently horrible.

Skylar is occasionally understandable. She’s not bright, and she can be petty, but at her core she’s generally acting in the interest of her family.

Even her affair is arguably to force more distance from Walter.

Marie is consistently a selfish, manipulative, nosy, prideful gossip who lacks even an iota of objectivity.

The writers didn't do a good job with Skylar. For some weird reason they created a giant sour faced cow who went around judging everybody.

Do people think the audience was supposed to like Skylar?

It seems like the audience isn’t really supposed to like anyone. Flynn (Walt Jr.), maybe?

Everyone is problematic. Walt’s pride stops him from accepting guilt money from his former startup partner. I feel for Hank, but his problems are of his own making. He bullies everyone around him, deeply insecure, makes most people miserable because he’s constantly livid and thinks he’s unhappy in his marriage. Skylar at least has what seems to me a normal reaction: her husband has lied to her about money, has begun illegal activities which put her children at risk. She wants him gone, but feels trapped on multiple fronts. She tries to crush Walt’s resolve, but fails to grasp Walt’s epic resolve.

This is one of those “technically speaking” scenarios. You’re right, technically speaking, but the logic doesn’t hold up in the face of a monogamous relationship. I’ve been on both sides of that logic, and it never makes anyone feel appeased.

No, it's clear cut. She filed for divorce.  Just cause walt was being a little taint doesn't mean their relationship was still alive.

Looks fucking great!

I really hope this is a major audience success so that they do a S2 with Last of Us 2. Last of Us 1 is great and I think it will translate well to TV, but it's also just another zombie show about people drama in a zombie apocalypse and I feel like audiences are pretty over zombie shows at this point.

Last of Us 2 is more a Cormac McCarthy story and I think that will feel more fresh to TV audiences if they get there.

Yeah, a lot of people lost their shit over the concept that almost every character was a different shade of gray versus black and white where everyone needed to fit into nice and neat boxes. It was actually pretty disappointing. I am glad that Better Call Saul continued the nuanced approach.

Watching the new Rings of Power episode. I blame Game of Thrones for making directors think it's a good idea to shoot nighttime battle scenes where you can't see anything. Feels like I've been watching a black screen for most of this episode.

Some more thoughts about The Bear:

  • The soundtrack was the unsung hero of the show.
  • The long take in episode 7 was amazing. Built so much tension.
  • None of these actors or writers will get the plaudits they deserve.

A "flaw" so to speak that just makes Better Call Saul more interesting - character-wise - than BB, is the simple fact that the premise of Breaking Bad is one of "good guy turns bad". It's even in the shows name. But Walt was never really that great to begin with. He was too prideful to take money from his old partner even when he got cancer and had a  struggling family and turned, instead, to making meth. That's pretty 0 to 100. Right out the gate, Walt is kind of not that great (which I know is the point but still). Meanwhile, Saul, we know who he eventually becomes. We know he's a corrupt fuck in the end. Which makes the earlier exploits of this would be try hard lawyer that keeps failing, and failing, and failing despite no matter what positive he has all the more poignant and sympathetic. Walt instead gives up and decides to make meth right around when he gets a cancer diagnosis. We don't see that slow boil in the way we see Saul's character, who is truly a good guy (or a guy trying to do good) in a crazy world which makes it all the more fascinating to watch.

I truly feel that even the first season of BCS is better than the entirety of BB based off of writing alone. The success in BCS is making Saul is a more sympathetic and tragic figure than Walt is.

Don't get me wrong. Breaking Bad is one of my favorite all time shows but I think there's some kinks that lower it than I would prefer.

Rings of Power finally got some action with episode 6

There's still some stuff where I wonder why the writers had it to write it this way when it could have been done simpler but it's fine overall.

Watched the first episode of that Stephan Moffat show Inside Man, and wow does it have his worst excesses on full display.  Convoluted situations with oh-so-fucking-clever characters, and then they went and combined it with some absolutely laughable direction.  It might be the worst thing of his that I’ve seen it’s so bad (I couldn’t even finish Sherlock season 4, so maybe that’s worse).
