Yeah, the stated point of the relaunch was to draw in people who weren't reading comics before, but it's clear that the actual goal is to further pander to the dwindling fanbase.

I'm gonna out-cynical your cynicism, GR:
It was to avoid having to stop making comics altogether. They're doing it the only way they know how, which is not all that well. If they succeed in raising sales, it will be from either: 1) lapsed readers like many ITT, or 2) iPad owners curious about digital

HAT: mindlessones.com

if they realize the comics industry is failing why continue to use the same business model?

If I were in charge of DC/Marvel, I'd have the big hitter comics (Action Comics, Justice League, Batman, X-Men, Iron Man, Spider-Man;etc) bi-weekly with a sticker price of two bucks a book.

Waiting one month for a book that feels like it's the first 10 minutes of a tv show -- an incomplete story -- with no end goal or end destination, a story that continues on and on and on and on, is not going to swing non-comic readers into buying a 4 dollar comic they can read in oh....5 minutes that, let me remind you, comes out once a month.

In comparison, I can pick up a issue of Time for less than a comic, and spend 1-2 hours reading through and digesting all the content.

On top of this, they're not really selling these books where people actually buy shit. These days, it's all about itunes. I'd put comics on there, bi-weekly, at the expense of slightly lower quality art, with longer average page length, for 2 bucks a pop and advertise the fuck out of it. The movies, cartoons and tv shows and video games for these comics are popular as all fuck so I don't see why the comics can't be either.

If they want the comics business to survive, they need to change their business formula. Following a formula that was created almost 100 years ago ain't gonna cut it. I think looking at stuff like manga and graphic novels for inspiration would be for the best.

Just about every week I enjoy reading manga. Sure, it's black and white, but I get a new 20 or so page chapter EVERY WEEK.

Or hell, follow a shounen jump format and bundle all the big hitters into ONE GIANT MAGAZINE and sell it bi-weekly. Put your most popular hits, the best of the best, in that mag, it should be 300-500 pages and dirt cheap. Advertise the FUCK out of it. Monthly floppies (single issues) do not make sense on a grand scale in this day and age.

You have comics that have been going on for 70+ years with no end goal, no finale, not even a destination, they just go on and on. The best these guys can do is make this as approachable as possible to non-comic book fan.

There are so many sources of inspiration they could draw from, and the fact they still stick with the status quo is both hilarious and sad.

yes, but it's what they know. Desperate as things may seem for them, many at the top now (like Jim Lee) are still coasting on millions made during the 90s boom, or movie money (like Mark Millar). It's the small indie houses that will take the bold steps first - Dark Horse has much better pricing for digital, for example.

The move to same-day digital for all titles is a huge and sensible step but I totally agree they also need to pull the trigger on pricing/frequency/format issues as well. You should be able to buy the new Spider-man on iTunes for a quarter and read it anywhere. Then you could actually pull in some new readers, I think. But Red Hood and the Outsiders for 3 bucks for 20 (shitty) pages? :lol

The benefit of the giant magazine idea is that you could also put it on display near the cashiers where the tabloids, Disney Adventures and crossword puzzles go at grocery stores. Kids would EAT THAT SHIT UP. Especially if it were weekly, cost around 4-5 bucks, and had all their favorite superheroes in it.

I used to buy my comics at KROGER (a grocery store) when I was a kid. I didn't go to comic shops. They would make so much bank!

well, it's a whole different model. If you sell at grocery stores etc, then you have to allow returns. Which means 50% of what you sell to retailers ends up coming back. This is why they moved to what is essentially a print-on-demand model with the so-called 'direct market' (which ironically means comics bypass 99% of the population). Digital is their best hope of overcoming that barrier, I think.

i can't imagine this being worth while on a 7" screen

exactly - iPad is jussst big enough, 7" Kindle Fire is quite not

ah to dream for a 13" tablet

i like the android tablet semi-standard of a 16:10 1280x800 10.1" screen, it's a nice compromise between 4:3 and 16:9 and is closer to comic page dimensions.  the average dimensions of a modern mainstream comic are 6 1/4" x 10 1/4" which would make the ideal screen size around 12 inches

maybe someday... :-\

Well, what smart companies will do first is start designing the comic around the iPad, like Chris Ware did. Opening digital comics with a single page followed by a double page spread is just dumb (ala JLA #1) - new readers immediately go AARGH WHAT AM THIS

i'm mainly talkin bout scanzzzz of all my old shit, on the ipad the bottom 1/4 of the comic was always cut off so i had to scroll up - not a big deal, but not ideal

new stuff, yeah, they better tailor it to the screen standard because that screen is what's gonna save them this time

Anybody reading Witch Doctor from Image? It's got a really fun 'House meets Hellblazer' vibe to it. I giggled at least 3 times at the latest issue. I recommend it unreservedly. The zero issue is even free on comixology!

http://www.witchdoctorcomic.com/

The Flash was probably the best from DC this week. The story was pretty slight but the visual storytelling was really nice. Had a very fresh feel despite not being Manapul's first run on the Flash. Proof that artists can tell a story better by themselves than when being stage-directed to death by a writer who can't draw. (although to be fair, some of the narration was a bit clunky...but who cares).

I got the 0 issue for free in one of my Walking Dead issues.  Eh.  I didn't care for it.  About halfway through I flipped further towards the end to see "is this really all there is?"

But to be fair, I've been thinking of giving it another shot.  Going from The Walking Dead to Witch Doctor was kinda jarring and it wasn't what I was in the mood for.  I was mostly just thinking "I could be reading the next Walking Dead issue"

Agreed, on everything except Batwing (ok but I don't think it's worth the cash so just read a scan. Hey look there's a black man with lightning powers! That HAS to be parody...). Action was spectacular apart from some bizarre shifts in the art (I still don't have a firm idea of what Lois is supposed to look like!) but that's just quibbling really. Swamp Thing and Animal Man were imaginative and chilling, and beautifully rendered. Foreman's cold, clean, spidery style is working really well on that book, and Paquette has come on leaps and bounds. He used to be basically a 3rd rate Bryan Hitch but now he is doing stuff worthy of the pedigree of Bissette, Veitch and Totleben on that book (nice little shout-outs to those guys in there too...)

We don't seem to agree on all that much so I'm betting those books will continue to be the stand-outs. I culled pretty much everything else from this week's nu52, other than OMAC (which ruled, again). Stormwatch sucked again so I may have to drop that.

Hey Cormac, did you get Holy Terror yet?

Yeah, I did. But Prison Pit 3 was in the same package so I read that first. Holy Terror is in my stack, and I have a 5 day weekend coming up so hoping to get to it then. I've paged through it of course - it looks spectacular. But I hear the story is really bad, jingoistic flag-waving bullshit so not in a real rush at this point.

My comixology pick of the week would be The Bulletproof Coffin from Image. The collection is super-cheap - 700 yen which barely buys you a coffee and a muffin these days. I think that's 9 bucks or so in your money. The Essex County complete collection is also a steal (by the writer of Animal Man for you newbs).

I have to say Scott Snyder is only rising in my estimation. He's not Alan Moore but he is putting out a ton of solid comics right now. I just read the American Vampire issue that was illustrated by Jordi Bernet - exquisite stuff in the vein of Alex Toth. Loved it. Batman is solid, Severed has a lot of promise, Swamp Thing has me eager for more...

Yeah I put off my purchase of Holy Terror after reading so many bad reviews.  It's 30 bucks that can be spent somewhere else for now.  I went through it at the store and the art is awesome so I'll eventually get it for that I guess but I just can't get excited for the story.

Snyder is one of my favorites right now.  Severed and Animal Man are my favorite series right now and American Vampire is definitely up there.  I haven't read Swamp Thing #2 yet but I heard good things and can't wait.  He's on a fucking roll.

I can't wait to read OMAC #2 :hyper

I might get that bulletproof coffin but I just started a few collections like Fables and The Walking Dead

If you want some more wacky Kirby action but can't deal with the 50s-70s stuff (which would be sad but understandable...I grew up with it so my tolerance is high), I highly recommend Godland from Image, which is almost done now. Just a few issues left, although they are coming out really slowly. They are all up on comixology and oh my GOD do they look insane on the ipad.

Mups -

sheeit, well. The Fourth World Omnibuses (4 of 'em, about $25 on amazon IIRC) are a great place to start, especially New Gods and Mr Miracle. As is the Lee-Kirby run on FF, which starts getting really good around #40 on. The Marvel Masterworks TPB series are really good for those (considerably cheaper than the original issues at this point :lol). From around vol. 4 is the start of the best stuff.

His runs on Thor and Captain America are also amazing. Big hardcover omnibuses of both of those just came out this year, as well as his 2nd run on Cap in the 60s (which was some crazy crazy shit). Basically though, if it says 'Jack Kirby' on it, it's at least worth looking through it. I just can't ever get enough of Kirby. Oh yeah, check out the Kirby Fuck Yeah! tumblr. That'll give you some ideas on where to start digging.

It's great. You could totally start there. It's not far removed from the 4th World stuff - he did Kamandi very soon after that so the style is very similar.

I was wondering because I noticed Kamandi Omnibus 1 was in my personal Amazon Gold Box for $29, which is not bad for ~500 color pages. I've been wanting to read his Fourth World stuff ever since I read Final Crisis and there were tons of references to it, but the hardcovers are kinda pricey right now, and the first of the paperback reprints doesn't come out until December.

X-Men Schism #5 was good. Wolverine is a dumbass.

Care to spoil it for me? I don't read comics anymore but I always like to hear what's going on with X-men.

Basically, X-Men Schism is a limited series that separates the X-Men. This month is going to be the final issue of Uncanny X-Men. Cyclops and Wolverine are going to have their own teams. Cyclops is blue team in Uncanny X-Men, Wolverine is gold team in Wolverine and the X-Men.

Basically, to have an idea of what's going on you have to know about the House of M/Messiah Complex events in which Scarlet Witch takes away everyone's mutant powers (House of M) and the X-book story Messiah Complex, in which Cable protects the newest mutant birthed in a time when no new mutants are being born, Hope Summers (not related to Scott), a girl from the future. Eventually some mutants gain their powers back. This storyline decimated the mutant population from millions to hundreds. Magneto loses his powers, as does Professor X. Of course, since these are comics we're talking about,

Fast forward to now. The Xavier Institute has been destroyed, so the X-Men move to their own island off the coast of San Francisco Bay christening the island "Utopia". Since there are only hundreds of mutants, mutantdom is facing extinction and this is forcing nations to get more aggressive towards the annihilation of the mutant race. So they're making new, more powerful sentinels and anti-mutant tech. In light of this, Cyclops and Wolverine are having a rift in ideology. Cyclops thinks that because mutants are now a commodity and that mutant kind is literally at war, that the children (Hope and her friends) should be taught how to fight and survive in such times. Wolverine argues that the only reason he fights is so that the children don't have to.

The violence escalates when attending the opening of a museum for the history of mutants when terrorists with new anti-mutant tech manage to kill any mutants in there and knock the X-Men out who are in attendance. Cyclops tells one of the kids trapped in the museum (Idie) to save her own hide by killing the troops inside. This just makes tension worse between Wolverine and Cyclops. The brunt of the X-men forces are out fighting Sentinels across the world as nations get more mutant trigger happy and this leaves Utopia vulnerable, leaving Cyclops and, Wolverine and just a few new recent recruits (Hope and her friends) to fend for themselves. Wolverines hates that Idie had to kill  for herself, Cyclops thinks it was necessary in order to survive. With Utopia being taken over by a group of powerful Sentinels, there's no line of defense except for the kids who are there. Wolverine hates this and thinks they should leave. Cyclops argues that they have no other place to go and other nations won't have them and that fighting is the only course of action.

So Wolverine plants bombs across Utopia, and threatens to bomb the place, taking out Utopia and the Sentinels with him. Cyclops and Wolverine fight. I mean, really, really fight. Cyclops blows away Wolverine's face with his beam, to the point where Wolverine face is nothing but a skeleton with eyes. Wolverine sinks his claws deep into Cyclops' body MULTIPLE times. This shit is brutal. All while a Sentinel is about to blow them to pieces. The kids come out and help them beat the Sentinel's and Wolverine disengages the bomb. The next morning Logan tells Scott he's leaving and doesn't want to have anything to do with his X-Men, gets a blackbird, his own team, and moves shop to the destroyed Xavier Institute in New York.

So we have this:

Cyclops now pretty much has a bunch of dudes seen as bad guys on his team (Colossus, who has been infected by...oh it's not worth going into, Magik, Magneto;etc).

Wolverine has this team:

I'm pretty sure that Wolverine WILL call in the Avengers and have them take on Cyclop's X-Men.

I actually knew about what happened in issues 1-4, just curious about how they wrapped things up in #5. Thanks, though!

Oh. They just fight. Cyclops burns off Wolverine's face and Wolverine stabs the shit out of Cyclops. Then they part ways and then the issue basically ends with "welp, cyclops was right"

Cool. Team Cyke for life, even if he is teetering towards becoming Magneto.

Jean Grey School for Higher Learning. Ouch. Way to go, Logan.

Speaking of Logan, the whole "kids shouldn't have to fight" is so out of character for the guy who trained Kitty and Jubilee over the years to fight against those who hate and fear them.

Logan is bordering on creepy these days with the Jean Grey shit. Fuck.

I like that Cyclops is teetering towards Magneto. In the Fear Itself line, it's pretty much revealed that his biggest fear is becoming another Magneto and dooming his fate as a pro-mutant militant.

Cyclops' development has been amazing recently.

I don't know. I don't see the point in Jean coming back now that Scott has Emma.

But yeah, she's totally coming back. Eventually.

I don't fucking know. I don't see the point in Jean coming back now that Scott has Emma.

If Scott ends up going full blown Mags, I'm sure they'd figure out some excuse to bring her back and make him feel like crap for betraying the original dream.

Yeah, I had heard that.

Stuff like this always make me interested in getting back into X-men, but then I remember how many different books there are, and Wikipedia summaries are more than enough.

X-Men Schism #5 was good. Wolverine is a dumbass.

Care to spoil it for me? I don't read comics anymore but I always like to hear what's going on with X-men.

Brief summary of Schism: A new Hellfire Club appears.  All of them are super-intelligent CHILDREN.  They murder the old Hellfire Club members and their parents.  Then the fuck with the X-Men by creating a new type of Sentinel after them.  Quentin Quire also comes back from...wherever he was (I wasn't reading X-Men when this character was around) and commits an act of "Mutant Terrorism," then seeks asylum in Mutopia.

Long story short, a bunch of nothing happens.  Quentin Quire just sort of disappears from the last few issues.  Some X-Men go to the opening of a "mutant museum" and get attacked by the Hellfire Club.  One of the newer mutants ends up killing them all on Cyclops' orders, turning her from "innocent" into a soldier.

This is what pisses Wolverine off.  He doesn't like the way Cyclops is leading the X-Men and feels that the younger generation shouldn't be made into soldiers who can murder without remorse.  Kind of weird coming from fucking Wolverine.

Then a Sentinel is sent to Mutopia, which is the downed Asteroid-M base, now serving as their island "country."  Wolverine wants to evacuate the island and blow it up.  Cyclops would rather fight the Sentinel, but the only people on the island at the time are the kids.

So Wolverine and Cyclops brawl right in front of the Sentinel, which starts attacking them.  They work together and destroy it while the Hellfire kids watch from far away.

And that's it...only a little anger is displayed, and the story drags on way too slowly.  Wolverine and Cyclops don't continue fighting...instead Wolverine says he's leaving, gets a Blackbird jet, and finds a bunch of X-Men already onboard that want to come with him.  They fly back to Xavier's (demolished) School grounds.  The end.

Total waste of fucking time.  This could have been two issues long instead of five, seriously.

LOL, I see Himu covered it.

If you're gonna read any X book, make it Uncanny X-Force.  It's self-contained and far better than everything else out there.  I'm hoping that if nothing else, Schism makes the other X books interesting again.

Despite the marketing, however, Schism #5 shows that this is a mutual split.  I would have preferred it if they had two X-Men groups that were at each others' throats due to their different ideals.  This storyline did not come off that way.

Oh, and Professor X was not involved in the mini-series.

Two issues is pushing it. I think it could have been done in 4 but I wouldn't say nothing happens.
