After reading the current Hawkeye and liking it I got the immortal iron fist, because it's supposedly the same people. but then I find out the end bit is done by different people. Is the quality in iron fist consistent? Is it actually good at all, because I kinda just assumed so without asking anyone... ?

It's good to the end but it just stops. There is disappointingly little David Aja art in the whole series (he's a commercial artist/designer by day and just couldn't keep to the schedule). But most of the art is still great - John Severine, Travel Foreman...

Reminder to self - post a few pages from Daredevil by Chris Samnee. Easily some of the most striking work since Miller left.

My copy of Marshall Law hardback came today, it's great apart from the forward that I've not bothered reading by Jonathan Ross.
I really wish HBO would snap this up and turn it into a series.

I loved this as a teen but there is not a whole lot of substance there, especially in the later crossover bullshit. How on earth would this work as a HBO series?
I didn't really bother with the crossover stuff until I downloaded the cenobites vs Marshall Law. I didn't reach the end, due to not wanting to.

I've not read Marshall Law also since teen, so it maybe could be kinda vacuous. I'll post my important thoughts when I've finished the book. It's also got the eye guy in it as well, whose parents used to sew kittens eyes shut for science!

The first issue of my friends comic is out and it's free. If you have the time, please give it a read: http://thrillbent.com/comics/the-eighth-seal-2/

As I understand: New issues every week, will cost $1 or so. Every two weeks the previous issue is made free for everyone.

It's quite good! I've paid money for worse, for sure. The page staging, or whatever they're calling the sequential panel display works pretty well, too.

I actually read a copy of Spawn yesterday not having read an issue since like 1994 and while McFarlane is writing it, the artist is total shit and they've basically turned it into a cheap Hellblazer rip off.

Only thing good at the spoof covers.

http://thenewinquiry.com/essays/the-devil-you-know/

long article on Hellblazer.

The first issue of noir horror comic John Constantine, Hellblazer — which Detective Comics announced it would cancel and reboot starting February — is arguably the most socially situated issue that the company ever published. Over forty subtext-soaked pages, occult detective John Constantine travels from London to New York via southern Sudan, rehabilitates and hypnotizes a druggie friend, and trades jokes with a Haitian witch doctor in a midtown high-rise — all while tracking a demon that’s landed in New York from Tangiers. Behind such post-colonial fantasia, John also finds time to clean his apartment, get yelled at by his landlord, kill time on public transportation, buy insecticide from a South Asian bodega, and sexually proposition his ex-girlfriend, who happens to be dead. The comics blogosphere has reacted to Hellblazer’s cancellation by writing eulogies to a certain generically “cool” mascot version of John Constantine: a handsome, exotically British rogue who chain-smokes Silk Cuts, always “knows the score” and has a lot of sex in squalid little horror stories. But this slick, atavistic, frat guy incarnation is undoubtedly exactly what’ll be preserved when DC relaunches the comic — once a trenchant critique of consumerism — as a PG, family-friendly quasi-superhero product ready for the imminent Guillermo del Toro movie reboot.

This essay serves as a eulogy for what will be lost — specifically how uncool the book was, how virtuously unpleasant, how vitriolic, melancholic and spiteful, how negatively charismatic, how difficult to read. The biggest loss will actually be something that really only survived the first twenty or so of the comic’s 300+ issues: its leftist politics and countercultural ethos. Out of all the comics written for Vertigo — the most writer-friendly mainstream comics imprint of the 90s — Hellblazer was the title most interested in the real world, as opposed to, say, twee faerie kingdoms. Its best (and most disproportionately unpopular) writer was Jamie Delano, who wrote the comic’s first 40 or so issues after spending most of the 80s unemployed and smoking pot. His oppositional commitments were never really carried forward by subsequent Hellblazer writers (many of whom I love) and his run on the comic, which has only recently been collected. The comic, which now sells a third of what it did in the 90s, gradually shed its political allegiances, perhaps leading writer Warren Ellis to hold a symbolic funeral for John Constantine a few years ago in his own comic, Planetary.

comixology has the X-O Manowar reboot on sale for a buck an issue.  Did anyone pick any of these up?  I've been impressed with the Valiant relaunch titles I've read thus far (Shadowman, Archer & Armstrong) but I haven't picked these up and my usual comics review blogs have largely ignored the relaunch.

Any thoughts?

I've just finished the last four Fatales. That's basically the things problem, most of its a really slooooow burn. There aren't any exciting cliffhangers like in King of the Rocketmen and Flash Gordon's Buster Crabb (who looked like a serious wife-whipper). 24 also.

Comixology is having a sale on Dynamite comics right now.

most of Dynamite is HORRIBLE, however you can now pick up a few good things like

The Dreadstar Omnibus.  The first 12 issues of Jim Starlin's great 80s work

Garth Ennis's Battlefields.  You can get two collections for $7 a pop and this is probably the best stuff he's done.  Funny, over the top, actually affecting war comics.  Like all Ennis work it can get kind of silly, but when it's on, it's damn good.

Black Flagg! Definitive Collection.  I have a huge nostalgia boner for this, so you may want to find someone else's opinion.  Think of this as the Leftist American Judge Dredd with less shooting the underclass and more mocking the overclass.  A talking cat is president.

I'll never get this, if the art is shit the book is pretty much worthless to me. It's a visual medium, the art is HALF the book. It's why I never finished Uncanny X-Force because Phil Noto came on and ruined the book with still, dull, lifeless, shit art.

got some trades in while i was at Chicago and finally read them

Avengers Arena - i don't know half of these characters and the ones i do know (from Runaways for example) i didn't really recognize so their constant slaughter doesn't really mean much to me.  it's merely ok to me
Thunderbolts - i see what the creative team is going for, but it just didn't work for me, sadle

new edition of Authority.  BEAUTIFUL hardcover.  collects the first 12 issues in a slightly oversized format with beautiful reproduction of the art.  didn't do much beyond read the first issue but i'm looking forward to hunkering down and leafing through it

Not nearly as deserving of the hate piled on them as you'd expect. A friend was forwarding me all his singles as he finished them. They were good. The Darwyn Cooke art in Minutemen is very good, and the story treads a neat line between the silver age inspiration from which it drew, and setting up a tone to match the original work. The Silk Spectre stuff is well drawn and fun, but a bit fluffy. The Comedian is closest to what I'd expected, in a good way.

The worst which can be said of them is that they're kind of superfluous and unnecessary, as an addition to Watchmen canon; on they're own they're pretty good.

Marvel Comics the Untold Story is pretty damn amazing.  But what's funny is how much of it is actually...well TOLD because the primary sources seem to be fanzines and previously published interviews with the subjects.  It's a fascinating look behind the scenes into stuff which at the time I had no clue about. I spent my money on comics, not magazines about comics, so I didn't really know any of this stuff at the time.

The section Boom and Bust about the 90s just makes so much sense.  Marvel was fuuuuuuuuucked up and I got out of comics pretty much altogether right when the mega hype stuff was destroying comics as I loved them so I'm very curious to read about the mid to late 90s bust cycle as I have practically 0 knowledge of comics in that time frame.

it's really hard to tell who fucked Marvel more.  The money men of the 70s / 80s or Stan Lee chasing after Hollywood dreams / legitimacy on the back the work of other men.
i kind of wish that there was more, i don't know, journalism or whatever of this ilk regarding the bronze age, because I'd love to learn more about what drove certain decisions.  I'd love a follow up about DC, but as that company has been around forever and lacks a "Stan Lee" it may be hard to craft a narrative.

It's amazing to read the shell shocked reactions of Marvel Veterans to the hiring of Palmiotti and Quesada but if it weren't for P&Q, I probably wouldn't care about Marvel at all.

Lee's talked about it a lot and it seems like it was the money men. When Warner bought DC, Lee was pushing that something like that should have happened with Marvel. If it did, they probably wouldn't have gone bankrupt in the 90s. Apparently there were offers like that, but the people running Marvel were either too stupid or too stubborn to let it happen, and then the company went bankrupt and had to sell off X-Men and Spider-Man to Fox and Sony FOR LIFE.

Apparently there were offers like that, but the people running Marvel were either too stupid or too stubborn to let it happen, and then the company went bankrupt and had to sell off X-Men and Spider-Man to Fox and Sony FOR LIFE.

did anyone expect Lee to go with "Stan Lee"

Um. It's a one-shot for villains month with a father and daughter sharing scary stories about him. It's not redoing anything.

I didn't say it was redoing anything.  The "ugh" is that they're even bringing back Doomsday at all.  I had the same reaction when Venom appeared in Ultimate Spider-Man.  What's the point of a reboot if you're just going to port over the bad stuff as well?

That said the DC Squared stuff sounds interesting to a point.  I think "choose your own adventure" comics is neat, but comics with sound effects is kind of eh.  I'll have to see it before I render a final verdict.

Since I'm reading it in trades, I'm way late to this but Captain Marvel #9 is some damn fine comics.  The entire series was a little shaky at first but then really picked up after the first arc.  The second volume has been great reading.  Love this series and it will be a shame when it is inevitably canceled.

And speaking of "series that will be inevitably canceled" jesus christ The Movement is fucking horrible.  It's social liberal theory for the tumblr set.  It's 2013's Captain Planet.  I have followed Gail Simone since Agent X but this is just blergh.  If there's ever a DC comics Avengers Arena rip off, it's young characters from this book who will inevitably be murdered to give the series a bit of grimdark gravitas.

You can't go "uuuuugggggggh" and then praise the awful Captain Marvel comics.   :yuck

you are high.  The Captain Marvel comics are very good and present something you rarely see; genre comics with a female lead character written by a woman with characters that are somewhat mature.  Carol Danvers is presented with a kind of world weariness and ennui that Greg Rucka turned up in his writing of Wolverine.  To see this tone taken with a female character is fairly unique especially when this kind of crushing Camus Comix is just one aspect of a fairly well rounded character.  Carol in this series has been through a lot but she isn't defined by her past damage.  She is still allowed to be funny and she is allowed to fail, as her first instinct is to solve her problems with her firsts.

My largest complaint is the title's inability to keep a consistent artist.

That's great.  The stories have been largely awful and the art has gone into the toilet.  I like the character but couldn't stand the book any longer after the second arc started.
