I played like 40 minutes of Prey, and then spent a bunch more time trying to get decent AA going. I don't want to get hung up on this, but it's genuinely bad. Shimmering edges everywhere and I can't get over it. :stahp

So I thought I'd just supersample an be done with it, but no, DSR won't work right. It just centers the image, no matter what scaling option I use. The AA overrides in the Nvidia control panel (why is it so janky, btw?) don't seem to do anything either and I can't inject anything with Reshade, because it's UWP.

Their work on Hitman really elevated that campaign.
The still images in Hitman 2 are kind of a massive downgrade by comparison.

Is The Messenger worth playing? Liked the look of it from the beginning but only now getting around to considering buying it.

Read some critical user impressions that the second half is backtracking prior levels for padding, some controls for later mechanics are unintuitive/inconsistent and the trope references said to be on the nose.

Could be such criticisms are exaggerating those aspects though. Just hope it'd be something that is entertaining enough from start to finish since I enjoyed throwback platformers like Shovel Knight.

I really liked the first half and thought it was very well written in a parody way with good gameplay.

I gave up before finishing the first half though because so many people told me the second half is awful and not worth the time to play it :|

It's great. the humor can be too meta and grating but nothing too bad IMO. Easy to tune out. The level design and mechanics are fantastic though.

I would say the second half is weaker but it has it's own highlights and the game isn't very long so the metroidvania parts, while weaker, don't overstay their welcome.

I highly recommend it. One of the better side scrollers of the era.

Hmmm, maybe I'll get back to it. You're literally the first person I've heard not say the 2nd half is trash and not worth playing.

Trying out these Game Awards demos.

System Shock - Seems fine. My impression was that SS1 was kinda so-so in the first place and SS2 was the amazing one. Dunno how exciting this SS1 remake will be.

Skatebird - Holy F^(%#K this is the worst camera since a 3d Sonic game. Not very fun to play either. Seems very much a "hey isn't this a cool idea" game for screenshots but doesn't seem like it'll be any good.

Roki - Kinda neat theme adventure game but felt slow getting around. Has the problem with a lot of modern PnC games dumbing down for style that makes them zzz

The Drifter - Complete opposite. Total Lucasarts SCUMM engine throwback with inventory and everything. Was great and actually compelling enough to get me to finish the demo. Hopefully this turns out good because I'd play this through.

Interesting, Powerhoof who did Crawl (which got great reviews but being a multiplayer game wasn't my kinda thing) is a 2 person dev and they are each working on a game with Acid Knife & The Drifter. Pretty good stuff from these guys so far.

Chicory - Seems cute and kids these days will like coloring in their own rpg town. Not my kinda thing.

Spiritfarer - Wow, this seemed amazing. Really fluid movement, crazy good animation, some building/crafting stuff, sailing around a world map. Then you get to the point where you sail somewhere and you have to actually sit and wait and fuck around for 10-20 mins or something while the boat sails there. I gave up about 60% of the way. I was 100% on board with the game but that one thing killed it entirely. If you could just sleep and fast forward to arriving at the next location I'd play this. Hope the final version gets around this.

Ok, played the rest of the demos.

Moving Out - Cute and funny little puzzle game. Not my thing but seems fine.

Heavenly Bodies - Lol, this game is probably good for its target audience of young'ins on twitch/tik-tok/whatever doing silly stuff. I don't dislike it but I just can't do games where you are fighting the controls the whole time  :'(

Wooden Nickel - Fine interactive fiction. Not bad but didn't feel like it does anything to really stand out.

So yeah, out of the 12 demos the only game I really liked was The Drifter. Everything else was fine but not stuff I'd play through (well I'll probably play SS1 remake at some point). Acid Knife & Carrion definitely have potential but gotta see where they end up.

I mean outside of SSD speeding up loads we're definitely at the diminishing returns point.

I think the main difference for the next gen systems is gonna be:

-native 4k resolution @ 30fps
-SSD speeds

The issue imo is that it takes a fucking lot to push native 4k (yeah, I know some Xbox X stuff is native, but settings are generally lower than PC). Like with the specs for next-gen consoles they most likely will barely be able to push current-gen 1080p games at native 4k. My $3k brand new PC rig can't even run everything at 4k so I'm playing at 1440p. Once they get past that bottleneck of 4k resolution, we'll see improved lighting and stuff. SSD should give more freedom in design too.

I don't see 8k every being needed at home, so theoretically the PS6 generation should be really impressive since 4k will be a no brainer and leave a lot of extra power for visuals on top of that.

I’d love it if next gen games each had “max detail” settings and “60 FPS” settings. It’s great on the few console games that have such things.

Hopefully next gen has much better cpus. We will hopefully see more going on there + the power of the cloud.

I've tried... Several times... I can't even come close to it clicking for me.  :-\ It feels so dreary and fan made.. I agree with AVGN; if anything, the character development and world building may be good, but the actual game itself.. it doesn't resonate.

Ray-tracing at 4k and 30fps with good graphic settings?

Yeah, I don't see it. Unless they're not gonna do 4k and still gonna run 1440p checkerboard to fake 4k.

I will still buy these new boxes on day one :goty

Bonus hot take: raytracing is a fad, it costs way too many resources for a kinda negligible result.

Ray-tracing in CONTROL is insane and not what I expect to see in every game but a more balanced approach like in COD really helps to clear up shadows and the likes.

Ray tracing is something I feel like I only notice when I’m looking for it.

Like it looks cool, but not enough that I ever would care about turning it on by sacrificing frame rate.

Even looking at videos side by side, I can only really see it in reflections, or occasionally in harsher light. I think devs have just gotten so good at faking those effects that’s it’s not really necessary.

Reflections is the big thing, but yeah big AAA games have so many ways to fake light bounce, that in games like Control, you kind of need to squint to see it.
However in stuff like Quake and Minecraft, where an alternative was never in place, it's pretty massive.
