https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/28831398/tim-duncan-filling-gregg-popovich-gets-first-win-acting-head-coach
Quote
Tim Duncan got his first victory as an acting head coach Tuesday when he filled in for Gregg Popovich for the San Antonio Spurs' 104-103 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

Popovich missed the game while dealing with "personal business," according to the team. He is expected to return to the bench for Friday's game against the Brooklyn Nets.

The team would not say if Popovich made the trip to Charlotte.

"It's night and day to be in the big-boy chair," Duncan said. "But truth be told, I wasn't in the big-boy chair. We've got [Spurs assistants] Becky [Hammon] and Will [Hardy] and Mitch [Johnson]. Mitch prepped the game for us, Becky and Will were making all the calls, and I was the only one just standing there screaming at people -- nonsensical stuff.

"So we did it coach by committee, and it could've been any one of us up there and we would've done exactly the same stuff."

Asked if being a head coach is something he wants to pursue down the road, Duncan said, "Nope. Pop is going to be back, and I will be happy to hand it right over to him."
Bigger story for me is Tim Duncan's hair, wtf poor guy is going through a midlife crisis.

Charles Barkley on Draymond Green: "He's the least famous person in the boy band, and he thinks he's a star. And he's not."

"I think [Draymond is] a good player and a great guy. I like messing with him but he's got the perfect face for radio!" Barkley added, "He don't have a TV face! He could do the job but he doesn't have a face for TV."

I remember Vince Carter making a shot to beat the Wizards in a regular season game, in the Gilbert Arenas era.

It was when they had that new ball that everyone hated (Steve Nash said it made his hands bleed and they changed back), and he heaves up a buzzer beater three pointer from the top of the arc. The ball hit right where the rim connects to the backboard (which always produces a miss and a long rebound) and then the ball just died and slumped down into the net.

Still miffed just thinking about it.

Against the backdrop of a global pandemic, NBA owners and executives are bracing for the possibility of mid-to-late June as a best-case scenario for the league's return, sources told ESPN on Sunday.

Fears exist of a season completely lost, especially based on what some experts see as the slow response of the United States to flatten the curve of the coronavirus and make testing available on a widespread basis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a recommendation on Sunday night that no events or gatherings should include more than 50 people for the next eight weeks.

The league office has given teams no guidance yet on a timeline for a resumption of play, but organizations themselves are preparing for the possibility of a long hiatus based upon the facts surrounding the coronavirus outbreak.

The NBA moved from the idea of games without fans in the arenas to suspending the season indefinitely within minutes of Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert testing positive for the coronavirus on Wednesday.

"Our world has changed since Wednesday's [board of governors] call," one team president told ESPN. "The reality isn't lost on anyone right now.

NBA owners are awaiting the league's financial projections on lost revenues, which are expected to be shared with them soon, sources said. J.B. Lockhart, the NBA's chief financial officer, has been leading the effort to deliver owners what all expect to be challenging financial projections on a short-term future that is thick with uncertainty and volatility.

The NBA likely will provide projections on three primary scenarios: the financial costs of shutting down the season, restarting with no fans in the arena, or playing playoff games with fans. Those losses will be reflected in next season's salary cap and the players' share of basketball-related income.

For now, there's a working plan that games would return without fans, and teams have been told to search out arena dates well into August for the playoffs, sources said. Teams have been directed to give the league office potential dates at smaller nearby game venues, including team practice facilities, that could spare the use of empty, cavernous arenas and possibly provide backdrops to unique television viewing lines.

Organizations must evaluate the short- and long-term implications of this season's stoppage, including future sponsorships and ticket renewals. Many owners are feeling the sting of not only the loss of NBA games, but the loss of concert dates and other events in darkened arenas.

Through it all, NBA commissioner Adam Silver is encouraging his league to be open to experimental ideas in every area -- scheduling format, venues, television -- on how to respond to an unprecedented crisis.

While there is growing concern about what's coming and the health of American society, there remains some optimism that the season can be resumed. Mostly, there is uncertainty because no one -- not owners, not Silver -- can be certain based on the unfolding of the coronavirus impact and how dramatically the escalation of the crisis will impact the league's ability to resume.

If the NBA isn't back until June, I wonder what that means for baseball and hockey? Are these sports all going to have to run mini camps to get people back into shape? Spring training was almost over, so what happens to pitchers arms, do they have to stretch them back out again?

I mean despite all their plans, that's all they are. It's pretty much impossible to predict how things will look in a few months.

Not having NBA has fucked up my evening ritual which generally involved watching Lakers game and then going to bed. Now I don't know what to do with myself at night.

One idea I would consider, if they look like they could get fans back in the buildings around May, is simply doing a tournament, with the "full playoffs" format only for say, the Semi-Finals to Finals at most. Set the seeds based on where the season ended. Lock in the top six seeds, and then let more teams into the tournament.

Not let every team in, but say down to the 12th seed in each conference, do that one game elimination tournament idea to get the 7 and 8 seeds, first round could be a best of three, then maybe a best of five Second Round, then back to seven games for the Conference and NBA Finals. Ending only a couple weeks beyond where they would normally.

The real scheduling problem that drags out the playoffs is during the first and second rounds anyway, temporarily cutting those down to best of 3 and best of 5 lets you do them in two weeks instead of a month. Even cutting just the first round down to a best of five potentially saves you a week.

The main reason I'd do an expanded "play-in" round is to get some games back for the lower/bubble teams but not really threaten the contenders too much. If they really can't get back by June, then I'd start thinking about not only a shortened first two rounds but also cutting out the conference seedings, seed by record only.

Main thing to preserve imo is the Conference Finals and Finals at seven games. Even if you have to just say Bucks and Raptors and Lakers and Clippers, sorry everybody else.

I'm down for whatever. My initial thought was of course the regular season is gone and just do the playoffs but as the scale and scope of the problem progressed last week, that scenario seems naively optimistic.

I really have no idea what will happen. My only real belief is in the greed of the owners and the greed of capitalism so I tend to bet on them not leaving money on the table once a few weeks pass. But it depends on how the public is feeling. This one of those rare cases where sentiment of the public will also take part in any decision. If the death toll reaches a certain level, the public's appetite for playoff basketball won't be there.
