I hate to make platitudes like "everything I dislike about anime lately," or "this show had nothing for me," because A Dark Rabbit Has Seven Lives did have one thing in it that interested me; an offhand reference to Alexander Crowley. Ranma is not ABOUT boobies OR pedophilia. Neither is Tenchi. Or Ah My Goddess. These were stories that had global appeal because they were funny and awesome. To say anime has always been this way is false. Harem anime didn't REALLY take off until the success of Love Hina. After that, anime got crazier and crazier and more niche.To say there ISN'T a dearth of more mature anime television on air today is also false.Stuff like what's on the air today, back in the day would have been some weird ass one shot or some ova no one cares about. It was hardly standard and that's because anime studios tried to appeal to multiple demographics, they didn't try to fit everyone into one hole or appeal solely to the otaku demographic.
