One month ago, my dad almost fell for the Nokia@hotmail.com "You won 1,3000,0000 GBP" scam. He called me to verify it, but it was more of a thinly veiled breaking of good new since I was able to sense the excitement in his tone. I remember using some very harsh words in my state of disbelief, some that I really regret. He was so offended he refused to talk to me for almost 2 weeks.

I hate when that happens. Sometimes I'm in such disbelief that someone could do/believe something so stupid in regards to technology that I end up being too mean. It was also shocking and infuriating to see first hand one of the types of people they're targeting with these scams, and in this case it was my poor 70 year old technologically illiterate dad. I remember some of the things I told him was to stop using the internet altogether if he's going to fall for these things, that I'm really worried he's becoming a risk to the financial wellbeing of the family, and to "next time, look at the freaking address, why would Nokia register its official email at hotmail?" an advice he's not able to process it to this very day.

I still feel terrible :'(

Still not as bad as what I said (but I was only like 13!). My mom asked if she could take a movie back. She had gotten widescreen when she wanted fullscreen. I was frustrated by this point. She had already opened the movie and I had this conversation with her ever since she first got a dvd player. So I told her "They might. Or they might just look at your like you're stupid because it says "Widescreen" right on the box." She started to cry and left. Man.

It's weird because I work with a ton on (non-computer) engineers who most are fairly tech savy, at least with using a program even if they don't know what's going on under the hood, but anyone 55+ is as big a luddite as anyone's grandma on this forum, but still know more technically about mechanical equipment than I'll ever hope to forget, so I'm mystified why printing to a pdf is a strange and scary to them.

I do expect at some point I'll fall behind, but can't imagine why I'd ever just give up at some point.

NP. I had a horrible time with that shit earlier this year. Got lazy and didn't take the time to do the various Windows updates that pop up, then one day after work I got home and had viruses thanks to my brother. Got rid of the major viruses but I battled the redirect shit for a week. A mixture of deleted old java and running TDSKiller saved my ass.
