Never even heard of Skylanders until it came up in this thread.

Are they doing the limited run thing to make them collectable and going for insane amount too or are they available at retail if you want them?

From what I can tell, they come out in controlled "waves". It's DLC with the ability to manipulate supply and demand by the content provider. It's Pokemon + TMNT Figures + paid on-disc unlocks. They also have 3-packs, so there is the chance they will profit off you buying the same figure twice if you can't find the one you want in the 3-pack individually. Of course, you could probably resell your extras easily in the market right now.

I can't see Skylanders toys retaining any value, they will die like Beanie Babies and all that shit.

You have to maximize by getting the hard to find shit now and selling it.

Basically this. They're selling out because it got caught in a buying frenzy that Activision wasn't ready for, not because it's some rare, obscure toy that will be worth a ton in 20-30 years.

I'm also kinda wondering about your fixation on the "paying for content that's on the disc" point - if they made the same exact game with the same exact unlock mechanism, but instead of shipping the data with the disc they had the unlock trigger a network download (of more or less the same data), would that move it from evil to non-evil? Despite it being exactly the same in every way, both in terms of end-user experience and production, other than making the unlocks less convenient and reliable?

It would be at least paying for something that is being added to the product you already bought, instead of paying again for something that already exists in the product. It doesn't make it good, because it would be a reworking of still trying to sell you less game for more, but it wouldn't be so blatantly disregarding the consumer. There's something about having the disc already have the data and then having people pay for it again that says "You idiots slurp my cum." The way they are doing it is also deceptive.

Looking at the list of attendees, outside people I know from irl, I don't know who almost anyone is on gaf anymore. I think I realized a while ago that all the posters I actually knew on the forum, and most of the old-time posters there, moved here. If you say someone's name from EB I probably know 95% of them and their posting history, what part of the world they live in, what kind of porn they like, ie. how to make fun of them. On gaf it's like .001%

Well, when we originally started posting on gaf, gaf was much more tight knit. It was smaller, for one, and it was easy to "know" every body in that sense. Now gaf is much, much larger.

Haven't really looked at the gaming side or entered threads with strong system speculation. But this seems like the first tangible game that has caused some disappointment over no WiiU version being developed.

And GAF is all about communities now. I actively post in photography threads and sometimes the NFL one. You can tell each thread has its own denizens.
