I don't understand why they're being so aggressive with wanting to strangle the second hand market. They've already got an ingenious way to make some money back from used games (game codes!) and the transition to DD will work in their favor and over time they could probably limit physical releases to force people to DD. By employing this supposed sudden anti-used method they'll just foster ill will from consumers and hurt the brand even more.

Maybe these companies will try out digital game rentals.  maybe it'd be something like: $19 to play it for a week, if the person wants to keep it, drop some more cash.  I know Steam and PSN both support timed ownership through free weekends and playstation plus subscriptions.  But that still screws gamefly.

I'm not exactly sure how the used game business operates.  My understanding is that people buy games, play them for a week or two, trade them in, buy next game with that money, and repeat.  And/or buy used games at ~$10 cheaper, with smaller loss between cost and resale value.

I encourage Microsoft/Sony to have anti-used game measures in their next consoles, and I personally can't wait for the day when everything is sold digitally and isn't available in physical form.

As someone who pays full price for their games new and doesn't buy used (in an effort to support the industry that I love), I feel like those that buy used games are just lining the pockets of middle men like GameStop rather than directly supporting the developers of games they get much enjoyment out of.

It's for this reason that many developers can't take financial risks and we are left with derivative and stale products that are recycled in a yearly fashion. Single player games are now quickly becoming a thing of the past, and it's unfortunate because I'm not much of a multiplayer gamer.

The industry simply isn't healthy as a result, and measures taken to protect publishers' content from a huge industry that they don't directly benefit from are absolutely welcome, IMHO.

Used games are a threat to my beloved hobby and need to die soon.

Gamestop have been biting the hand that feeds them for two long now.
Hiding new games in their stores where you canīt find them or selling used games as new (happened to me twice).

Down with Gamestop and used games. Long live video games.

Itīs happening and we should get used to it.

Wrong. Publishers and devs will make money on every game sale. Regardless the price.

Trade ins make gamestop rich.

I donīt get why everybody here seems to be a lobbyist for Gamestop and no one cares about devs.

Walking into a Gamestop and seeing a huge pile of (good) used games from devs that were recently shut down kills me.

Or devs that used to make awesome big budget games now making iOS games.

The iOS ecosystem is healthy.

That actually makes me happy, Wii U should have around 2 GB of RAM. Maybe 3 but that might be getting too hopeful.

Of course, games probably won't look like they have that much to play with due to the controller. But still.

Eh, it'll have at least 1. Thinking about it, I believe 1.5 GB is the most likely, but who knows eh?

It's still closer to 4 GB than the Wii was to 360 (96 MB vs 512 MB.) Edit- Actually Wii had 88 MB. :lol

This.

Whenever somebody starts going off about Gamestop, I become very Republican which is about the only time I do become Republican. Fucking Gamestop doesn't mean I want to get fucked too. I want to postpone losing my rights as long as possible.

It's inevitable that such a system will eventually come to consoles or whatever we play on in the future. I'm not naive. It also doesn't mean I'm going to cheerlead it or not resent it when it comes.

I think this gnashing of teeth about no more used games (without a tasty fee) is more to do with imposing something with no proper rational recourse apart from not buying nextgen consoles.

Personally I'm relishing MS going arse over tit with their next console, everything about it sounds huge warning bells for me.

As long as PC is catered for regarding marquee games, and Vita gets a decent roster I'll be more than happy. iOS will continue to go from strength to strength, no idea/don't really care about Nintendo anymore.

I like used games for lots of reasons.

1.) I can gamefly stuff or rent stuff.
2.) I can at any time go to a store or look online and buy something I want for a relatively cheap used price. That's for every game. I don't have to wait for a steam sale or some other kind of sale. I can get it whenever I want.
3.) I can pass down games or consoles to younger family members who can't afford games and such.
4.) It's my fucking right to buy a tangible product and sell that tangible product. I'm not keen on losing rights for physical products.

I also like digital products. I own plenty off ios games and pc games bought through digital distribution along with plenty of XBLA games.

I like both systems.

My main issue is losing rights I currently have along with this illusion that exists that selling console games with these codes will suddenly fill the revenue gap that exists with consoles. The revenue gap exists because of facebook, social games, ipad, and iphones, etc  I'm betting that implementing such a system will not lead to the increased revenue these people think it will.

i think my favorite thing about this rumor is the "you'll still be able to sell/loan the game!" defense, because i think there's a good chance that unlock system will get an even worse reaction than blocking used games altogether

Has Gaben talked any more about plans for trading games on Steam or whatever? They seem aware that it is something lots of people would use.

From a standpoint of economics, all those game keys that just sit in someone's steam account represent dead money. Getting it moving will generate value for the whole Steam economy. Part of the reason why I wait for Steam sales is that I know the games have zero resell value, but who knows, I might be prepared to get in earlier & at a higher price if I know I can just trade it later to my homies on the Bore for something decent.

Whether or not I ever actually do trade a Steam game is largely irrelevant; I mean, I never play the ones I own anyway. It's just the perceived theoretical value that keeps me coming back.

Green Man Gaming already offer the trade-in of digital games and it doesn't seem like it's a feature most people care about. When customers are willing to pay more for the same product on Steam there is little incentive for them to add the feature.

The only way I could see these anti-consumer measures to stick, is if all three manufacturers implement it together at the same time. If only one system have it, there is no way it's going to sell well.

If you like a developer's games, you should buy them at full price. Developers are dropping like flies this gen, they need the consumer's, especially the hardcore gamer's, support. Too many people are buying too few types of games, or only buy games that have a 90+ metacritic.

Specifically with gaming, don't bitch and moan about dlc and online passes when there are people in the world that would kill to live in a situation where an online pass is your largest problem in life.

Whiny bitches.

Has anyone there posted that they are too much of a fucking baller to worry about the petty costs of online passes or DLC?

not in the thread i snatched that quote from, but i'm sure several hi-dolla rollahs have expressed that sentiment at one time or another

will post if i find them

Since I took the time to read through the last few pages, I'm going to weigh-in on this one.

1) As a current Gamestop employee that loves getting paid money, I think this whole thing is a bad idea.

2) As a current Gamestop employee that only gets paid minimum-wage (like most), has to fight for hours, gets bitched at for not meeting unrealistic goals of getting people to reserve games and subscribe to their magazine, hates having to hassle customers about reserving games and buying magazines, doesn't get any incentive for meeting those goals, and generally feels like they are compromising a lot of their personal morals and values by working for this company, I THINK IT IS AN AWESOME IDEA.

3) Speaking from an economical point of view, "cutting out the middle-man" is going to put a lot of people out of jobs (granted most of them will be teenagers) across the globe so that a few developers can line their pockets a little more.  Let's not pretend that this is going to create more jobs in the gaming industry.  Economically speaking, this is a bad idea.

4) It is entirely possible that this could be a good thing for the U.S. at least.  The gaming industry taking a dive would be helpful in combating the obesity epidemic that we're seeing here.  I realize that this is largely a gaming forum, so I may be talking to the wrong crowd, but would it really be that bad for a few of us fatties to see a little more sunlight every now and then?

a lot of messageboard folks say that, and i believe it because i don't buy very many used games either, but i bet most normal folks like myself do sell off their unwanted or finished games from time to time to fund new purchases, and if games you were trading or selling on ebay/craigslist/amazon drop in value from say $30 to $15 you would still find yourself affected and your future new game purchases would be affected as well

I bought a lot of used games when I was a broke ass high school and college student.

I don't buy many today because the $10-15 I usually save when buying a used game often isn't worth whatever hassle it takes to get them, peeling off the stickers, etc.

I cancelled my Gamefly subscription over a year ago because my gaming habits are too erratic to continue to spend money on their service.

I assume a lot of people buy used games otherwise Gamestop wouldn't be in every strip mall out there in the US.

I have no fixation or tie for new games at $60. I do buy my share but its mainly the big ones or the ones I know I'm absolutely going to like and offer extended length. The Battlefields, The Cods, the mass effects 3.

The reality is I'm not going to spend $60 on a new game that's like 8 hours or something and has no multiplayer. That's not to say I can't enjoy that experience or game a great deal but I'm not going to spend $60 on it. Skyrim, GTA, multiplayer games that I spends hundreds of hours, even something like Batman, or Darksiders which offer maybe a dozen hours but high polish or replayability.

This what is really going on. There is still a large market of gamers who have no problem paying $60 for games. What has utterly changed is what the masses consider a value proposition for those sixty bucks. And the reality is a small number of games hit that barrier. The console market is still struggling to come to grips with this. The only real effective solution they've created is xbox live arcade/psn but there are a ton of games in the middle that are being squeezed out. That's another area where the missing income is. I think I'm a fairly typical mainstream gamer in the sense that I tend to pay to play the big stuff or good value for money XBLA games.

This is where used games come in. Games that are in that middle ground where I end up buying them. But I personally have no stigma against used games. I like to save money on games. Nor do I hold on to my games forever. I either sell them or give them away.

My personal rule to keep gaming expenditures low is to have a $1 an hour of content/gameplay rule.  If I buy a $60 game, it is with the understanding that I will play this game for at least 60 hours.

RE: Gamestop bitching

I say this is good news. Gamestop bought all the competition. It is now the only place you can buy games in store. Sure, you can go to wal mart or something, but to buy the games *I* like I have to go to gamestop, which is why I get my games from amazon now instead.

Someone smart should invest and make a new kind of game shop for modern times.

I find the $1 per hour rule to be unfair. I use a quality rule. Most games I buy for full price, I am jizzing from my eyepores. Why? Because I know what I like, and I risk very little.

For example, I bought Portal 2 for full price, and I think it was worth it. Sure, I haven't exactly spent the 60 hours or so in terms of monetary value (1 buck per hour), but it was such a high quality game that I find paying a premium was justified in a way.
