RE Raccoon City is doing major damage to the franchise now that it sold well.

It's more than just the economy hurting the downward sale numbers of your average game.  Every industry got hit by the recession and many have come back.

I think the industry is just more spread out now. NPD doesn't account for that at all.

Millions of people are playing and paying F2P stuff nowadays.

Yeah, I feel bad for people who don't read gaming news and bought ORC.  My brother whose a casual gamer but always liked the RE series asked me about it one day after seeing some commercials on tv.  I think he might have bought it if I hadn't explained to him that it was an outsourced POS that got 3/10 reviews.  He'll probably buy RE6.

Long gen+cheap(used) games+unstable economic climate = must have games

New owners can enjoy hundreds of cheap games without giving any penny to developers.
Old owners have huge backlogs,no point in buying anything new.

Oscar, how well do Musou games usually sell?

Well, not especially well, but they sometimes do well enough.  One recent one did numbers like Kid Icarus for example.  Considering how little advertising they get, I think it's pretty easy to call them successful.

I'm not too sure they're considered a success anymore.  That both WO3 and now One Piece Musou are getting digital only releases on ps3 and dw7 Xl didn't come to x360...seems like they're getting worried and trying to cut costs.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the generation lasting as long as it did.  I still get impressed with some graphics I see from the 360 and PS3.  As for the Wii, that shit was outdated from the get-go.  Besides, the SKUs are still at $199 or higher.  If it were previous generations, all consoles would be $99-129 at this point.  Not $299.

As long as next gen rolls out in the fall of next year I'm fine with how long this gen lasted. First you have options if you wanted to. If you wanted the leap in tech you could just buy a PC. Along with the fact that this gen simply launched at crazy non-mass market prices. If you want good tech there is a cost to that. And the cost is a high launch price which slows down the adoption rate. I like a long gen.

the fun thing is neither of those okami numbers are right

japanese sales are a little higher (arch didn't account the best price version that sold an additional 12k copies) and the NPD sales are a good chunk higher, nearly 50% more.

I mean it wouldn't be enough to make bank on an ground-up original game with the budget of Okami, but as a port I think that's pretty fantastic, even if a lot of it was at discount.

Then again I can't imagine Capcom turned a hefty profit on the PS2 release either.

Okamiden did a lot worse than the other versions of Okami, but it still managed over 100k, so that makes it more successful than Bionic Commando 2009, Dark Void, any Yakuza game, Binary Domain, etc.

sorry methodis, frequency is older than the monthly data I have, and sold too poorly to make it on the LTD data I have.  amplitude sold too poorly to make the LTD cutoff, but i have some monthly data and it looks like it most likely ended up under 50k.

Kingdom Hearts will get a bump next week - it's been price slashed new just about everywhere, 2980 yen - 3980 yen.

Fire Emblem did very well - i've got it on standby for my trip to the UK

p.s. I'm almost certain next gen is going to bomb in Japan - Wii U will dominate.

I wouldn't mind WiiU dominating, as long as it's not handhelds or (even worse) cellphones... Such a shame all these awesome games were relegated to handhelds this past gen, I honestly hate gaming on a handheld. So uncomfortable.

Any of the J-gaffers have thoughts on why Fire Emblem did so well compared to previous FEs?

I guess I'm part of the reason since I haven't bought an FE since the GC one but I bought this one.  My reason was that the cover art was amazingly good and the graphics looked good in the trailers (like better than the console FEs) and I like good graphics.

Isn't stuff like DD games and DLC and F2P games that make all their money on in-app purchases going to completely shroud sales figures of titles to the public?  There's so much not-reported revenue going down, it's going to get hard to know what games are successful, what games are bombs without press releases from the publishers stating either way (which are always fudged anyhow).
