I also like Sunshine better than 64.  I recently replayed them both.  Sunshine didn't hold up *quite* as well as I'd hoped, but I still like it better than 64.

That said, if someone's complaint were "there's not enough variety in these levels!", I'm not sure handing them a game where every level is built around the same basic visual theme would satisfy them.  It's more pissing in their face than anything.

Nah, I meant that sunshine tried to stick to one consistent theme with variation as opposed to stark contrast levels of fire and ice and water.

And sunshine blows folks, its basically the doki doki panic of the 3d marios and was pretty indicative that nintendo were grasping at straws in the failcube era.  Also see-  windwaker.

Saying Sunshine is better than Mario 64 is sacrilege.  Say what you will about Mario games but all of the mainline Mario games appear to have an excellent level of polish...except Sunshine.

Sunshine definitely wasn't complete and I think had it come out in 2003 vs. 2002, it would have been a much better game.  Given how Gamecube was quickly falling behind the PS2, I guess Nintendo thought that they needed a new Mario out now, not later.  The only upside is that the bonus levels were fantastic and I'm glad they explored that level design into producing two fantastic games (Galaxy 1 and 2).  Otherwise, Sunshine is a completely forgettable game that was obviously rushed out to flail against the PS2.

Mario 64 is boring as fuck. At least Sunshine has crazy blue coin runs and despite the visual design not having much variety, the actual tasks in the levels are far more varied than anything in 64. At least it doesn't have crappy 30 second levels that have you going to the same place of the same level, at least 5 times. Meanwhile, Sunshine will send you to a different part of the level almost every single chapter.

And that's without mentioning the warp levels, which are better than anything 64 ever managed to come up with.

3d Mario didn't get on par with 2d Mario until Galaxy. Galaxy is the only 3d Mario masterpiece. I didn't even like Galaxy 2 nearly as much, but it's certainly better than 64 and Sunshine by a huge ocean.

Himu's Mario 64 greatest hits:

I haven't played this since I was a kid. Why is the camera so terrible?

DS version > this shit

At this point I'll be surprised if I even remotely like Galaxy, because it's obvious 3d Mario is the complete opposite of what I consider a good platformer.

I don't believe in the concept of "aging" in games. The game is the same as it was when it came out in 1996.

Also, my problem has very little to do with early 3d games. I love a lot of early 3d games.

But Mario 64 is  :yuck

I'd rather play Crash 2 than this garbage.

iirc himuro didnt play sm64 until the 2000's

I played a bit when it came out. I didn't have a Nintendo 64 at the time.

Pretty unimpressive at the time too, aside from the graphics and physics. Wasn't fun to play, so we played Panzer Dragoon and Nights instead.

SMB1, 3, and World are good....for nostalgia. But my main complaint about Mario games has never gone away over the years: too many levels, quantity over quality;etc.

That's the thing. I don't think those levels are necessary. I just don't see the point. If the levels are so boring I want to skip them and warp, isn't that a negative? To me that says,"We concede these levels are shit, so we'll give you the option to skip them." Good game design!

And the only reason I partially like SMB2j is one reason: the challenge. I respect that.

Look at those numbers, that's distinguished mentally-challenged. 64 levels, 78 levels, 80 levels? Why is any of that necessary and in what does that not prove that Mario games are quantity over quality? A platformer needs 20 levels MAX.  Over 80 levels, half of which are probably 30 second levels with easy as shit difficulty does not scream good game design to me. Give me 11-12 levels all of which tight as balls game design and maybe I'll wank over a Mario title.

But no, Nintendo fans will complain the game is "too short".   :yuck ::)

That is why I say Mario is not my type of platformer. I'd rather play Sonic 3 and Knuckles, Rocket Knight Adventures or a Megaman game.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles...stomps all over every Mario.

Yes. It allows you to play as uhhh Mario, Yoshi, Luigi and I think Wario?

DS version is better than N64 version due to control and camera and bonus content.

DKC2 was pretty decent as a platformer, though.

3d:

Klonoa
Heart of Darkness
Tomba 1
Abe's Odysee
Abe's Exodus

Spyro the Dragon, the original, WAS better than Mario 64.

Nintendo is milking mario more than ever, thats ok except that this NEW SUPER MARIO shit is the same fuckign mechanics recycled for the 4th or 5th time now. With the old 2D Marios you atleast had new stuff with every release.

This game doesn't have anything new?

The actual "cut scene" you posted is like a minute long.

I've watch several others from Sunshine. They're more numerous than any other Mario game and they're also worse than any other Mario game.

The point wasn't bashing Mario games for having cutscenes (the opposite, I feel that a large reason I didn't like SMG2 as much as the first is because it was really barebones) but piling on Brand New for being a hypocritical dope.

Heh, I can only imagine some of the responses if I let slip what other Nintendo games I haven't played.

If I had to typify myself I'd definitely say I'm more of a Pokemon fan than a general Nintendo fan. I usually pick and choose the Nintendo games I want to play based on what I like.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanyway, back to the actual topic.

So it seems the successor to one of the most mediocre Mario games ever failed to impress? Color me shocked. I'd rather play SM3DL than this carp. Yes, I said carp.

If anyone's going to bother spending actual money on a NSMB game, then they should wait for the Wii-U version. The A-Team is working on that particular title, whereas the unpaid interns handled the DS game.

I absolutely hate the NSMB graphic style and music, but NSMBU is SIGNIFICANTLY better looking than the prior games in the series, both because it's in HD (with no awful jaggies thank GOD) and a much improved art style. It looks 50-60 percent like a brand new game, almost.

Yeah, U does look decent/passable. It's like 30% in between NSMBW and SMG/old 2D games.

Hopefully they change up the world themes somewhat, I think NSMBW has one or two original-ish worlds.
