So Johnson won the backing on his deal but not on the timetable. So now elections seem likely. It all depends on the response of the EU.
The French have again already said: "NON!" but Germany pays so they decide.

Meanwhile Erdo met with Putin and he was so thirsty that he put the map of Syria on the table, while the camera's were still running.
So Putin waved with his hand and Erdogan quickly covered up his map of the spoils.

They came to an agreement which is very close to the agreement made between Turkey and the US.
Russia with the help of Syrian forces will help the Turks to clear out the proposed 'safe-zone' of YPG elements and other heavy weaponry.
Putin siding with Erdogan against the Kurds has made their position even worse today.

The Americans at the same time have dropped any pretense of fighting for human rights or democracy. The latest Pentagon plan is to guard the oil fields in Kurdish areas with 200 special forces and air power.
Basically doing what Trump wanted to do for a while in the Middle East: "Take the oil".

Iraq has told the US that their evacuated forces cannot stay in Iraq. Crossing out the plans of Esper to run counter terror-ops from Iraq.

As for Europe, France had to learn via Twitter that the Americans were pulling out and then had to scramble to remove their own special forces from the area.

I don't know how you fix it when Alberta refuses to accept any change on oil. Two-thirds of the country voted for progressive climate change and its only growing across canada. When the Libs go out on a limb to go ahead with the pipeline and get nothing back other than blame for it happing too slow (which would happen with the Tories too), then its like why try? The federal government would also need to work with the premier if they wanted to implement a real plan for getting their economy off of oil and that won't happen either.

I think the best they could do is try to split off Sask. and Manitoba from the Tories as energy hardly affects them. They vote Tories because the Libs never really acknowledge their specific problems. I'd love to see the NDP move away from campaigning on social issues (since its basically the same stance as the Libs and Greens most of the time) and move back to unions, workers, and farmers to try to get the prairies back.

Honestly, I'm happy for Quebec nationalism as long as its not separatism. I don't necessarily think it also has to result in the xenophobia it has and stuff like Bill 21. I think there is a way where you can have a strong national Quebec and still have strong unity, and with separatism being on a decline there, this might be a step towards that.

There is also a big difference in that the BQ is fairly close to ideology on most things to the Libs, NDP, and Greens and Bill 21 is really only the major clash - right now, Quebec wants the same things as most of Canada. That's a very different disunity than BQ was in the 90's. With Alberta, they are clashing on what is probably the biggest issue for a majority of voters either way.

I live there and all my relatives vote blue or red generally, even if they fit as "young PoCs"

country has frankly insufficient nationalism, knock american flag fetishes all you want but without a strong sense of nation it collapses into smaller scale regional bickering and no sense of unity

I don't think you need a strong national identity to have national unity. It might make Albertans less likely to talk about leaving, but it wouldn't solve the issue that they depend on an economy that the rest of Canada and the world are moving away from. Strong national identity doesn't necessitate strong national unity, just look at Appalachia.

Honestly, people just give a shit about their next paycheck here and for a lot of people that is their biggest worry. Suicide and drug abuse has been spiking around here.

Frankly, a lot of the debate has been framed, malicious intent or not, as being antagonist to Alberta. As a result correlating with the atmosphere of misery there is an uptick of hostility. That the feds/rest of the country/whatever wants to push the economy further down.

really, alberta isn't that guaranteed conservative bedrock anymore
even the libs took seats in 2015, ndp took provincial power that year and currently has the sole non-blue seat (in edmonton), calgary has had a muslim mayor for 9 years now
alberta is also like 1/4 non-white now

strategy going forward would probably be to accept some parts will never vote blue and see if you can coax some of the contested areas away by prioritizing

That's what I'd like to see, same with Sask. Though I think it's hard to get past the energy propaganda that anyone but tories will destroy the economy. Libs need to find new seats somewhere and it won't be Quebec or BC, so they can either move more left and eat the NDP vote to stop the vote splitting - which I think is what will happen with the minority government - or they can try to peel away specific prairie ridings, while still maintaining southern Ontario. Likewise, I think the NDP could win these if they focused on them. Still I don't know how you get past the climate change issue to do this. Still, maybe we will be in a better place in 2 or 3 years.

Honestly, libs and cons are not worlds apart, my family/relatives swapped red in 2015 and then a bunch back to blue in 2019, it isn't entirely out of the question to chip away at the blue base here.
I don't particularly feel bad about the Albertan O&G sector existing so long as oil is consumed, I just wish they'd gun towards being less dependent on it. Otherwise you end up in the current situation where people are just pissed and really it can't be fixed how they want it to be.

Ya I want the energy sector to continue and I'm for pipelines - I just want them to invest that money into green tech and I want them to get off coal and gas powerplants - which I think only works completly if they switch to nuclear right now - which no one will do. I doubt they could fully switch to solar and wind right now. The idea that we could shut down oil and gas and have any effect on climate change that way is a bit crazy.

Reddit comments, with no sources, told me Husky has been in trouble for a while and the Alberta government had them decrease production to increase oil cost. Regardless of the carbon tax and most of Canada's push for climate change progress, I think the energy sector would have been in trouble anyways.

Oh, I don't think it is a spur of the moment layoff, just that morning after elections timing is a little dirty.
I wish the world as a whole would float the idea of some the more novel nuclear technologies but so far the greenest bunch want to lock in to just solar+wind. Which I really don't see working out, especially solar for ~1/3 of the year here. What can or can't be done somehow gets pushed as being a conservative talking point.

Alberta is a tricky situation right now and you'd have to pick a slice to cater to since it is far from unanimous internally. The general economic anxiety just pushes them to vote anger.
