The farthest I can get on board with eugenics tend to be for stamping out severe genetically inherited conditions.
Not sterilization just gene therapy, gene editing ideally.

It's a slippery slope. Eugenics is the idea that you can (and should) increase the "quality" (who decides what constitutes "quality"?) of the gene pool.
Of course you don't want anyone to suffer or die prematurely. On the other hand, you absolutely don't want tailor made humans.
And from an evolutionary perspective, you never know which mutation could lead to which other mutation in the future that could prove to be extremely beneficial (or even essential) for human survival. Eugenics effectively ends evolution and freezes us in time.
