Red bulls is the worst name ever
Red Bull is a name that grows on you, I hated it in F1 but it becomes acceptable, even good over time

Galaxy isn't bizarre. Los Angeles is the city of stars.

It's just not as good as, say, the old Hollywood Stars name.

e: Chicago Fire is one of those inappropriate disaster names. See also: San Jose Quakes, Miami Hurricanes.

:(

Red bulls is the worst name ever

I just call 'em the Billboards.

Or if you want to be an effin' hipster, there's always Metrostars.

I'm partial to simple names in soccer.

Names like Manchester City Football Club. Or Football Club Barcelona. Or Liverpool Football Club. Nice, simple, succinct, respectable, graceful. So in the MLS, I prefer names like Toronto FC, Sporting Kansas City, FC Dallas (:piss Dallas :piss2). While I know that it makes sense to Americanize a lot of the team with American-like names, for some reason, it doesn't always seem to fit, many reasons given by Esch and Kara. I enjoy names like D.C. United, Seattle Sounders FC, Chivas USA, but that's about it. I do enjoy the Houston Dynamo name, for obvious reasons.

SC Dallas or Toronto SC just doesn't have the same kick as FC.

Soccer Club versus Football Club. I just...the second one sounds so much cooler.

There's a tension between integrating with worldwide football and paying homage to our own football history. Many MLS names are old NASL names which is one of the 2 apexes in the sport's history here, so while they seem just "American," they're our history. (Timbers, Whitecaps, Sounders, Quakes OTTOMH)

I think having a mix of both is part of the charm of MLS, though we could really do without poseur names like Real Salt Lake or Chivas USA (which is thankfully going away).

First step is changing the name to MLF.

I'm not taking the piss or anything, but if you want to be the number 1 sport you can't sit in the corner like a little bitch and be happy with a second tier name like MLS.

Then drop this whole college sports bonanza about football and just let kids play football like they do everywhere.

I'm talking about this play college sports thing while their peers are playing Champions League in Europe.

Whats the point.

And just being happy with the name soccer screams that football can never be number 1 in America, but in my heart I know it can because it is the best sport.

The NASL was American style dreaming big and it collapsed in spectacular fashion, setting the game back decades here.

MLS has always consciously gone out of its way to be the antithesis of the NASL. Slow and steady won't make you happy, but they've been a good rock to grow from and have been willing to adapt as conditions change. (Designated players, academies.)

Ah, the first years of MLS.  Game clocks running down from 45:00, fields with American football hashes, those funky hockey-style shoot-outs where you dribbled the ball from further out.

But I'm a DC United fan, so of course I'm going to be nostalgic for the 90's.

At one time I did have a soft spot for Colchester United, however.

Yep. I've been watching episodes from this docu-series, the history of football: the beautiful game. You can find them here:

Esch linked me to this a month ago and I need to co-sign this. Absolute beast of a series. Even goes through how most countries have their own historical take on the sport that has lasted centuries and how the idea spread around before it even what it is today.

It sucks, but on the plus side you (1) get up early on the weekends instead of wasting them in bed and (2) have the rest of your day to look forward to after watching your side lose in an embarrassing fashion or stumble in a "thrilling" nil-nil draw to a squad of dull shitkickers.

Pretending to be a La Liga fan has been far more work because their matches usually air around noon here. I have to use [name of football torrent site] to keep up on the team I pretend to follow because I really can't live my life around that. Plus, La Liga has awful weekday match timeslots that always seem to get shoved off on Athletic.

I love Championship level football - it's only a matter of time before it becomes Premier League 2 , viewing figures rising and it's genuinely an exciting league because no one has a clue who is going up or down. It's the perfect antidote to the Premier League's dominance by a handful of teams.

Also - the standard is pretty decent! (I would say that as an Ipswich Town fan... not that we provide too much of that quality! (well, certainly not since the late 90s/early 00)

Millwall - as i had to travel back towards London, i made sure i never went to Millwall games at Ipswich. Always trouble. Simply not worth it. But Ian Holloway is their manager these days and he's Godlike.

Futsal is the way to go here.

But the timing of English football on TV is great here - late saturday night and into sunday morning, couldn't be better!

"Oh crap, we're contracting" (2001-2002)

Yeah, them winning the CL probably felt like a nice bonus for the management, their true goal seems to be the biggest circus in the world of football and to generate the most revenue that way. Overspending on players is probably part of that. Also from what I have read, they're financially quit stable these days, even with this sort of seemingly absurd sums they spend, although Madrid and the spanish government were more than generous to them in the past.

"Real Madrid’s revenue totals €520.9 million, its net profit amounts to €36.9 million, and its net debt has shrunk by 27.4%," the statement said. "Real Madrid closed the 2012-13 fiscal year with a turnover of €520.9 million, 1.3% more than in the previous period, thus becoming the only sports entity in the world in far surpassing the €500 million revenue barrier for the second consecutive year. Earnings before taxes total €47.7 million, 47.8% more than in the previous period while net profit is €36.9 million, 52.4% above the previous fiscal year."
